Fried chicken

Great place! Went there for the fried chicken dinner which was outstanding. Green beans sides and mashed potatoes and gravy were perfect. Super friendly staff made it even better. I was truly impressed with the wine selection too. I'm all for California wines but the three I tasted at the White Mule were really good and tasty. Five stars across the board.

I ate dinner on a Friday night, the weekend of July 4th, at While Mule with a group of 7. It was my first time dining out in a restaurant in exactly 16 weeks due to the corona virus pandemic. The service was fine and the food was fine considering it's in Gasconade County. For $25 (or less) you get a drink, a small salad, a choice of entrée, 2 side dishes, and a small dessert. It's tough to beat that deal. Most of our party ordered the Rib eye which was the nightly steak special. One person ordered a filet and I ordered the salmon. I asked to have it prepared medium when I ordered it but the waitress said it is already cooked. It came out and it was not overdone. It had a nice blackening spice on it. I was told to order the river potatoes as one of my sides. They were drenched in butter and really good. All in all a smooth experience considering they only serve dinner here maybe 2 nights a week. There wasn't a person on the premises wearing a mask and it didn't appear they were doing anything out of the ordinary to social distance. I know things work differently out in Gasconade County but I would have expected slightly more. I'd return with a group of people.

I don't even know where to begin with how amazing the White Mule is! My husband and I chose this venue for our wedding reception and we could not have made a more perfect choice! The winery is family owned and they do whatever it takes to make you feel special and stress free on your special day! We were able to stay in the BnB on site the couple nights before and on the night of the wedding! They made us breakfast each morning and cleaned up after and offered up anything we needed! The venue was absolutely breath taking and a great escape to hold a special day away from the craziness of the busy world! I would highly highly recommend the White Mule for any major event! They will make you feel special, make you feel like family, and take care of you during your whole stay! Thank you to the White Mule family!

Such a wonderful place to be. These pictures are from their Facebook page.

Another Highway 44 adventure. This restaurant is located off Highway 44 in St. James, MO…read more I was pleasantly surprised by my experience here. The building is set back off the road a little ways sitting stately on top of a hill. The property is absolutely gorgeous. The parking lot a little dicey. Most of the patrons park to the right of the building on gravel. There are a few paved handicap parking spots in front of the building. Inside the building, the dining room and bar area are massive, accommodating a large number of guests. The decor is relatively clean and simple. I was seated at a cozy table and waited for my server. Nicole provided exceptional service. She was knowledgeable and attentive making my experience all the more enjoyable. I started my evening with a seasonal cocktail from the extensive drink menu. I always check out a menu prior to any dining experience. I knew the whipped feta dip and marinated olives were an absolute must. The cheese is sourced from a local Missouri farm. As are a large number of items served in the restaurant. I prefer to support local and small businesses when I can. This gave me an opportunity to support several all at one. The olives were a mix of black and green served warm with roasted garlic. I have never had olives served warm and will insist on it from now on. The flavors were phenomenal. The dish was generously portioned and enough to share with a small group. Or just for yourself like I did. I really couldn't choose between the entrees. Looking around at other patron's meals, I knew I wouldn't be disappointed with anything on the menu. I opted for a Cesar salad with grilled shrimp. I can't think of a time in recent memory when I've had a salad this good. Crisp romaine lettuce, fried capers, fresh breadcrumbs, and a luxurious dressing. (The salad is served with red onions which I very politely set aside as I do not enjoy raw onions.) The shrimp were the perfect combination juicy and flavorful. I finished the entire thing. I would have been remiss to not try a glass or two of wine during my visit. I decided a glass of rose' would be a good note to end my meal on. The wine is amazing, bright and crisp with notes of citrus. I picked up a couple of bottles to take home. I'm looking forward to sharing this find with my friends. I ordered a piece of the bread pudding to go. This was delicious and was a perfect treat later in my evening. I had a very enjoyable experience. The service was excellent and friendly. The food delicious from start to finish. The wine and cocktails paired well with the menu offerings. The cozy atmosphere made this a perfect evening.

So look, you have to consider this place in context. If you've never been to a winery or one in a…read moretraditional region (Napa, WA, OR, Europe) then you'll love it. However you're in the middle of Missouri where grapes don't generate like traditional regions, and palettes are different. So if you're familiar with wineries and good wine this will be quaint but not your place. This is more of an event space with wine as an afterthought as evidenced by the gaggle of sororities and moms funneling in all day. Frankly, I was appalled at the event I attended for my daughters sorority. Everyone bought a $25 bottle of sweet or semi-sweet wine (that's this wineries specialty), dropped in a straw, and suckled their sippy cups. Their sweet wines are like wine coolers - and what college student doesn't like those? That should give context to the quality of wine and positioning of this space). Their traditional varietals all have sweet or fruit forward notes - Cabs are more like Pinots but lacking the depth and notes of a true spicy, bold cab. Past this, parking is like a festival, down a dirt road about a quarter mile walk from the front door. While I wouldn't return, it's a great place for an event and provides something unique to the area. And obviously the Greek system utilizes as a more sophisticated approach to the bars in Columbia.

We got a wine flight with a variety of dry red, dry white, semi sweet wine. My favorite is dry red, but it seems like this place specializes in mainly semi sweet or sweet wine. Stunning vineyard and incredible wine! I got married here this past June and it was a magical day…read more With the wedding package, you get the vineyard to yourself for the whole day. It is such a picturesque place to get married. We also rented the old historic house for our wedding party to stay in for the whole weekend. Definitely a necessity since the venue is 20 minutes away from the nearest town and any hotels. The whole venue is perfect for a rustic wedding aesthetic. Lindsay, who coordinated the contracts and who I communicated with, was lovely and kind. The vineyard is not open during the week, so sometimes communication was slow. I was surprised on the day of our wedding, no one from the vineyard was present (a part from the bartenders). We had a few issues come up that would've nice to workout with venue staff, but we are easygoing people and made it work. It is the most affordable wedding venue I could find in the general STL area. There were a few extra costs like the wedding arch and linens, but those are minuscule in the grand scheme of things. I would definitely recommend visiting the vineyard for wonderful wine and cheese boards on the weekend or if you are looking for a stunning venue for your next event!

You can get a flight of wines for $5 or a glass of wine or a pint of beer for $5 each. You can even do a tour and tasting for $10. Plus, all the bottles are pretty much under $25. And they have quite a large variety of whites, reds, and roses too. Cindy, one of the owners, is so very friendly and helpful.
