What an amazing place this was for a 2 night stay!!!…read more Our stay included the 5 course dinner and breakfast both mornings, which was sensational. You can also order a less posh dinner (and drinks!) in the bar area, called the Drawing Room. All the food here tasted fresh, was presented beautifully, and the menu was diverse. Our room was phenomenal, complete with decor that complimented the castle's history with modern conveniences like a huge bathtub, heated towel rack, locked safe, and TV/wifi (though we didn't spend a ton of time on electronics because sheesh look outside the window). The estate is GORGEOUS, with a beautiful lake, some ruins of the original abbey nearby and plenty of places inside the castle to explore. It has been thoughtfully renovated to feature period artwork and decor throughout the castle. Most of all I enjoyed the very accommodating staff, who were happy to meet our every need but were "in the shadows" enough for us to explore at our leisure, drinks in hand, and take in all the beauty this place had to offer.

Disappointing customer service and culinary experience, staff were very helpfully initially saying…read morecahnges could be made with courses etc until we ordered 2 different set menus then approx.10 minutes later told us it wasnt possible said chef wouldn't accommodate after being told we could both order off separate menus. Attitude from restaurant manager was quite standoffish and that was the standard. Probably should state on menu or train staff so they know to tell customers in advance of ordering. Then staff kept a wide birth from us for rest of meal unless bringing dishes. To top it off the wrong main course was brought and I couldn't get anyone's attention to confirm so to be honest just ate it as didnt want to have any more interactions with manager. Room was nice with 2 exceptions exposed electrical wires in bathrooms and wallpaper coming of wall under the window. Easy fixes to my mind that should have been taken care off.

An exceptional experience from start to finish! Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was perfect…read more Check in was a breeze..we just went up to the gentleman at the desk, gave him our name, and he handed us the key to our room. It took, maybe, three minutes. He also confirmed our dinner reservations for the evening. In the lobby (which was more like a grand hall), they had a lovely array of complimentary coffee, teas, and pastries...all served with beautiful bone china. The castle is absolutely stunning both inside and out. The interiors are grand, and the grounds are just beautiful. We spent several hours walking around the park-like setting, and had drinks on the terrace overlooking the garden. Fantastic. We also walked through every inch of the interior's public rooms...don't miss the church! The entrance to our room was tucked away under a staircase. When I first saw it I thought, "Oh no, this room is going to be the size of a closet". When we went in we were taken aback. It was massive, with a very comfortable bed, sitting area, bathroom and a huge jetted tub. And it was clean as a pin, too. Dinner in the castle's opulent Dining Room was exemplary. Service was friendly and good-humored, and the food was very, very good. My wife had the salmon and I had the beef; both were perfect. We did the 3 course meal for 65 euros each, and feel it was worth every penny. Breakfast the next morning was just as good. It was also in the Dining Room, and was included in the rate we paid. Hot food was ordered off the menu, and cool food (cereals, fruit, cold meats, etc.) were offered buffet style. One last thing: as opulent, grand, and over-the-top as Markree Castle is, the one thing it wasn't was pretentious. You don't have to break out your tux, or sequined cocktail dress; as long as you don't look like you just rolled out of bed, you should be fine. At dinner I wore a white dress shirt and a nice pair of green jeans; I felt perfectly comfortable. Out of the 12 nights we spent in Ireland, this was our favorite we stayed. It's more than just a bed to put your head on; it's an experience, and an amazing one at that.

The drive into Markree Castle is a bit Agatha Christie, especially in torrential rain. You can't…read morehelp but think of Belgian detectives and drawing room accusations as you wind through the estate until you reach the castle. Once you're there though, it's the perfect place to disappear to for a few days of relaxation. We stayed at the apartments on the estate, in a converted stables. They were really nicely set up, very comfortable. These are pet-friendly too, so our dog was able to join us for the trip. It was great to just be able to take her for a walk around the estate. Location wise, there's a lot to do for outdoorsy types. A couple of loughs and bogs are good for hikers, and a few nice pubs in nearby Coolooney.

Interesting decor and layout in the lobby, restaurant and bar areas. The rooms are very modern, comfortable and spacious. Very affordable and excellent value at a rate of (i think) €99 per night. The hotel also provides free WiFi and Parking which is something a lot of hotels try to fleece you extra for. I dined here on two occasions - one of an evening meal (excellent) and the other was for breakfast. Breakfast is an all-you-can-eat buffet with the usual assortment of fired breakfast, juices, cereals, etc - something for everybody.. The food was all fresh and definitely didn't spend the morning sitting there under a heat lamp. I had actually only booked the room, without the breakfast option but the fantastically helpful lady at the front desk gave me some discount vouchers. Would definitely recommend The Harlequin to anybody looking for a hotel in the area.

Room was comfortable and well appointed for our two night stay. On the first night, we ate in the restaurant - a practice I usually avoid but it was a long drive from Dublin and many restaurants in the town were closed on a Monday night. That said, the meal was surprisingly good. My deep fried cod was on the right side of fishiness with just the right amount of batter, My other half's vegetable Indian curry was, reportedly, pretty good too. My 'dessert' was a very moreish Espresso Martini but as I was theoretically here for work I eschewed a second. However, on our final night here, a tour party of, shall we say 'seniors', were populating the reception area and 'enjoying' a singalong with what I'm guessing was a local wedding band. Excruciating noise and made the bar uninhabitable. A pity. Would happily stay here again if I'm in the neighbourhood so long as there are no 'concerts' on !! Recommended on all fronts (apart from the concert!).

Checked in around 2pm, then hit the spa! Our treatments weren't until 5 but we hit up the pool, saunas and other cool amenities. The hotel is super nice, staff is super duper friendly! Our package includes a 30 minute spa treatment plus 3 course dinner for 150 euro, which was pretty good. My scrub/massage was awesome, felt refreshed! Dinner was delicious! Rooms were very nice and the buffet breakfast the next morning was bomb! If you get a chance, take a walk around the grounds. Overall a great little get a way spot to relax and get pampered!

It was amazing! They even have a hair salon! You really don't need to leave the hotel over your stay as there are plenty of options to eat. The Botanic restaurant or the Cellar Bar (or room service) have got plenty of choice on their menus. It all comes from the same kitchen anyway. I was so impressed with the buffet breakfast. So much to choose from! Probably the biggest buffet breakfast I have ever seen in a hotel. Fried, scrambled and boiled eggs to choose from! The staff are very helpful and friendly too. I couldn't have asked for more. I really enjoyed my stays here (3 times in 2 years) I recommend it highly and I know I'll go back again.
