I was looking forward to this dining experience but it turned out to be odd. We arrived earlier than our reservation but they were able seat us early which was very much appreciated, after so much walking during the day we were tired and hungry. The waiter took our drink order and food order and then we waited a very long time (30 minutes plus) with no drinks. I had asked the waiter a question about lemonade. My kid has been ordering lemonade all over London and getting Sprite 50% of the time (we are not from England do not sure if this is a thing here). She doesn't drink soda as she doesn't like it, so I wanted to clarify if a lemonade here meant lemonade or Sprite. The waiter sort of snapped at me saying something about the difference between lemon and limeaide and I should order what I want (I thought I was by asking a clarifying question). His response to me was weird...it was like he was offended I asked but I honestly wanted to save myself from drinking a soda I didn't want and I didn't feel like I was being snarky in asking it). After ordering, we saw the waiter bundled up and talking to the people at the bar and we assumed he left his shift. It was hard to get anyone's attention after he left to inquire about drinks because of the hustle and bussle of the very busy restaurant. We waited instead of walking out because surely, a new waiter would be assigned to us and we were very hungry at that point but no one appeared. Finally, a gentlemen took notice of us and came over and inquired about our situation. We told him we had placed order but hadn't received anything even the drinks. He apologized several times and it was truly sincere (we appreciated that) and got everything going. We got the drinks and meals fairly quickly after he stepped in). The food (Sunday beef roast) was delicious. We would have ordered dessert but it just felt weird being there. The man helping us was very nice, made things right but as we left I couldn't help but wonder if the waiter purposely left us in a lurch (due to the lemonade/Sprite thing) or if he was due to get off his shift and didn't put our order in with the kitchen or the bar and didn't get someone to cover his table? Either way, what was supposed to be a fun Sunday Roast experience left us feeling like we were imposing. read more

Had an absolutely delightful experience Monday night with a friend. We both ordered the same dishes: Started with PADRON PEPPERS, roasted and served with a Romesco sauce. That was an abundant portion for a shared starter and precisely cooked, and served nice and warm. Main was PAN-FRIED SEA BREAM, slow roasted tomatoes, Kalamata olives, white wine velouté, green beans, samphire. The fish was filleted and perfectly moist and fresh, green beans were fresh and cooked to the just tender stage, and the white wine velouté was the right acid balance to the olives and samphire. They were out of sautéed greens, which we would have liked to try, but the broccoli with garlic and chili peppers was again properly cooked to the just tender stage. We shared a cheese plate instead of dessert and again a nice size portion of excellent cheese. I was pleasantly surprised that the smoked cheddar was as good as it was, as the goat cheese and cashel bleu were the draw for us. The rioja wine was also enjoyable. As to the service, it couldn't be beat. The servers went out of their way to make us comfortable. We were two friends who wanted to catch up over dinner for a long conversation. We were upstairs for dinner. We had a bit of musical chairs deciding where to sit as we didn't want to be seated under loudspeakers for music. Calum, one of our servers, immediately understood and without our asking, told us that the speakers were on separate zones and he adjusted the volume downward in the area we preferred to sit and it enabled us to have a relaxed evening without having to shout or strain to hear. Ann, our other server, was also so very attentive. She checked back several times to see if we were satisfied or needed anything, but never interrupted us. Both Calum and Ann were genuinely nice and professional. Finally, the aesthetics of the restaurant were very tasteful. Nice seating options, beautiful decor and plenty of artwork to make it an elegant yet comfortable atmosphere. There was also live music downstairs, which didn't disturb us upstairs, but which I would love to come back for on another occasion. All in all, this is a top notch pub / restaurant. A major improvement on my last visit, the Walmer Castle has been taken over by David Beckham and Guy Ritchie in the meantime. No celebrities in sight, but the football was on the telly when we came in for a drink on Saturday, having had no luck at Ed Sheeran's new venture down the road ... The pub was surprisingly empty for a Saturday night, but at least it still feels like a pub (despite the 'Soho House'-style makeover). Good selection of draft beers and decent wine by the glass. read more

The Walmer is a big pub on Ledbury Road, a 10 minute walk or so up from Notting Hill Gate tube. Downstairs it's got the look of a pretty traditional place that's always undergoing a bit of brush up and so it's fairly smart. There are some nice big tables and a few plasmas so I'd say it'd be a pretty place to watch a game, especially during the week if you want something quieter and more civilised. Upstairs there are is a nice Thai restaurant. I went the other night mid week at around 9pm and it was really packed. It's definitely no secret that this place serves up good fast Thai food from a pretty wide menu. Lots of stuff on the menu is designed for sharing so if you and a friend aren't suffering from any terrible contagious diseases this isn't a bad bet. It's also worth mentioning that The Walmer is included on many of the Top Table card offers so if you've got one of those you can get 50% off your food bill. read more

In summer you will not have a hard time finding this pub, as the locals from Notting Hill enjoy hanging outside drinking their pints. It is a lively and busy atmosphere, especially on week ends. Making your way upstairs, the first floor has been transferred into a amiable Thai place. A Thai friend took me there once and since then I kept on returning. Have you ever tried the coconut rice - it is delicious and a typical side dish. I tried to cook it myself - buy coconut milk and cook the rice in it. This place has a lot of customers coming and going, it is for a filling and quick meal after or before a couple of beers. Walmer Castle is a real summer pub - if you pass here anytime that it's vaguely warm there will be a bunch of people drinking outside on the pavement and in the street (it's a pretty quiet street)! It's a pretty standard pub, located in an area full of expensive boutiques and posh shops. That said, the crowd are pretty 'standard' too - not rich, not poor, not trendy, not untrendy, not quiet, not loud.... The Thai food is pretty average in my opinion - but on the good side of average! Just nothing too special in my opinion... This is a place I would go to if I was in the area, but wouldn't go out of my way to visit. It's also a good place to start off for some cheap food and a drink...then move on somewhere more exciting! read more

More "French Bistro" feel than English Pub feel here. This was a welcome respite during the long and crowded Portobello market on a busy Saturday afternoon. This place is slightly off the beaten path, but is just comfortable. The wait staff was friendly, and there are nice seating options at the bar, inside, and outside on the standard wooden picnic tables. They take cards which also makes it easier. Nice and enjoyable place. Oh, and a nearby wireless internet connection was also an unexpected bonus. read more

Went there for a brain storming session. Started off in the pub downstairs with a few drinks to lubricate the brain before heading up stairs to the restaurant. The food was very good, lovely flavours and well presented shame the service was a little lacking not dreadful but below average really. Also the pub got very very rowdy as the football came on I'm glad we had moved upstairs as the atmosphere totally changed from nice and relaxed to boisterous so if going check if there is footbal on first. read more

Interesting spot, all told. The pub portion downstairs was hopping on a Sunday night and seems to be a pretty solid place for a drink. Upstairs, it feels like you are walking into a totally different place. Dim lighting, modern decorations, and Thai food aplenty. The food was definitely good- the curries were appropriately spicy and flavourful without being greasy, and I liked the abundant selection of veggies in my red curry. I think pad thai may be slightly better than the food at Churchill Arms, if we are looking to compare pubs in the area that serve thai food, but Churchill Arms is much less expensive. read more

This is a great put to which to come in the summer to have a pint outside at their picnic tables. But it also has really good Thai food on the upper level. A friend and I would come, and even without a reservation we would get seated right away. It was never busy but never crowded either. A nice balance with friendly service. read more

I think the pub part of the Walmer castle is great - a really cozy little pub and in summer everyone spills onto the pavement tables to soak up the sun (it can get packed here). I was not so keen on the upstairs Thai restaurant, it is fairly mediocre food and clearly just pre purchased frozen spring rolls etc rather than freshly made. Stick to the pub and if you do need to eat just get a quick pad thai from the bar menu downstairs, it will be cheaper and just the same quality as the restaurant. read more

This pub looks pretty nice from the outside, heck, that's why we went in, but I wouldn't make the mistake of ordering a soft drink again. There are no economies of scale in this pub, if you want a large coke you are charged for two which means our two soft drinks came to over £7.50. read more

What's not to love? Had dinner at the Thai restaurant area upstairs on a week night with some friends. Something about the decor is warm and comforting....the kind of place you want to down a bottle of wine in on a cold rainy evening (or afternoon, no judgement). So that's exactly what we did. Four girls, a couple bottles of white and good food. We got one of the large banquet options, not sure exactly which one but I think it was around £24/person. With the tastecard, they happily took 50% the foodbill for two of us (they will take 50% off 2 peoples meals per tastecard if going with a group). The banquets are a pretty great deal. It comes with an array of appetizers and a bunch of different Thai foods including Thai Green Curry (one of my faves!), Pad Thai, Grilled Prawns and a Sea Bass with Bok Choy. Every single item they brought us was really good, tasted incredibly fresh and had I not been amongst company I would have easily licked all the plates clean. And considering it was all only £12 with the tastecard, it was an incredible deal. Would definitely recommend this place if you are craving Thai or just trying to find a place to hide out on a dark/rainy London afternoon. read more

Stopped in after a bit of shopping. Traditional pub vibe, and while it was fairly empty when we arrived, it filled up quick as we were finishing up! I had the beef roast and it was my second favorite meal I had during my trip to London. The au jus gravy was amazing--so much flavor. Service was fine. The downstairs of this pub is slightly grimy, very cramped on weekends, full of the Notting Hill chic club and sometimes overtaken by football hooligans glued to the screens. Booked this place on a Sunday evening for four people. It's a little off the beaten track if you aren't used to London and to be perfectly honest when we walked up to it we nearly turned around. It was heaving outside with drunks from the pub, swaying and shouting not a good first impression. Inside we weaved past more drunks and tried to not breathe in the smell of booze that was everywhere like it had soaked into the very fabric of the place and the strong smell of urine coming from the loos that seemed to waft around and went upstairs to the Thai resturant. By this point, one person in our group suggested leaving but we were all so hungry that we decided to stay. Upstairs it's basic Thai decor, nothing fancy that stood out, pretty enough but also like a pub. We were showed to a table and sat down. The menu was varied and so-so in price. We waited 20 minutes to order, the place was so busy and noisy it was hard to hear yourself think, not only because all the atbles were taken but the noise from downstairs and outside floats up making the whole place feel like a club :/ Finally the waitress came over and we placed our drinks order and then starters. then she walked off, not waiting to take our main meal orders. We looked at each other in surprise and one of my friends called her back over after 10 minutes of trying to gain her attention. She then told us that 'No, I will bring drinks then take your main order, it's the way we do it.' Okkkay. Strangest way I've ever seen to take an order. So the food came, it was ok, average, not mind blowing and I've had much better Thai for less money and in better surroundings. The final straw was after we'd waited a full 10 minutes after our meal to try and order desserts, I had seen a yummy looking pandan pancake I was really looking forward to, only to be told that no, they didn't have it and hadn't had that dessert for a very long time.. So WHY is it on your menu???? Bottom line, food ok, but over priced, waiting staff friendly but confusing and run off their feet. I would not come back. read more

Cosy little pub, and as mentioned, great during the summer. It is little so does get packed out. Add to this that they show the sport when it's on and it literally is spilling outside. We went there as is still states on the net that they have a Thai restaurant upstairs, it's closed which we were told by a sulky bar man. The general issue is the service is so bad and the staff barely speak English which is frustrating you're trying to ask them to clear the table and they literally have no clue what you're saying. Great gastropub in Notting Holl with really good Asian food. Moderate prices for this area. There are three tables outside, which is great when you stop by in the afternoon in spring and summertime. Just 5 minutes from Portobello Road, so it's a great place to go to when you're nearby to have a pint of beer and some good food (nothing fancy).
