The vortex is an intimate performance venue off manor road. It has a small indoor theater and an outside stage. Most of the ticketed events are inside. You check in at the box office and they give you a coin to use as your ticket when entering the theater. There's a main seating area and a side seating area. They put on variety of show throughout the year. At they have mutt cracker a nutcracker inspired show performed with rescued dogs. It's great to support community theater especially works that are in the periphery and cutting edge, The butterfly bar and patrizi's are also on property so it's popular for drinks and food too.

This is a very quirky, keep austin weird vibe bar. They had open mic when we went and there was good energy all around. Lots of college age students. I got the Griselda drink and it was a very fruity sweet choice. This is also the location of the Italian food truck Patrizis. I didn't get to try but would like to come back next time to!

This is a terrific community venue. I've seen some good productions (plays and other performances) here and attended some merchant/fair events. Their courtyard is designed perfectly for events like that, as it's not a flat, square space. The Butterfly Bar is on-site as well, which can add to the Vortex experience you are having. I look forward to seeing what is happening here.

Edit Annie was fantastic! I'm so glad my partner and I came here for our first visit to Austin and we can't wait to come back for another show. The venue was very cool as well. Delicious house made pasta at Patrizi's. The intimate theater was indoors adjacent to the Butterfly Bar, really loved the vibe of the whole venue. Enjoy live music outdoors before the show. The only downside to the theater seats was that they were a bit uncomfortable. My arms were falling asleep from resting on the metal arm rests. There was a reclining feature at least, so just scootch forward for some extra seat space. Tips: - Come early to eat Patrizi's delicious pasta beforehand, give yourself 1.5 hours, maybe even longer for larger parties of 4+. - Theater doors will not open until 15 minutes before the show, so you can relax and grab a drink until then. - Get tickets and all other theater rules and details on The Vortex website. - ENJOY!

Support the arts! This place is a gem. It was my first visit and I felt unsure of where to go. Luckily, the staff are friendly and helpful; they were all willing to explain things and point me in the right direction. I didn't arrive in time to eat from the Italian food truck in the beer garden, but I did get to sit at an outdoor table with my drink from the Butterfly bar (beer, wine, full bar + mocktails). Ten minutes before showtime, the manager rang a bell and announced it was time to come in. The play was awesome -- a mono drama carried by an actor who was a force of nature. It's incredible what one person can conjure up for an audience. I will be back!!

The first time I went to the vortex, I was, um, somewhat surprised. So my boyfriend at the time drug me to a vampire play. Alright, I'm down to wear a cape and faux fangs. Let's do this thing. But it turns out it wasn't only a vampire play, it was a NAKED vampire play. He didn't know it either but guaranteed he was not as dismayed as I was by the boobs swinging all over the stage. That is my only memory of the vortex until today when the Big Weekend calendar launch party used it perfectly. The space outside is huge and quirky. The space inside is a bar and a performance space. What an amazing area to have a great party, to see a small show or just to live la vida east manor. They aren't afraid of doing something super cool.. or out there. And I dig it. Even if it involves random boobs.

It wasn't what he said, it was how he said it with a condescending attitude and tone. I was apparently a menace or "youngin" being rude. I removed my purse from the stool and put it on the way too tiny hook for anyone's bag and then LITERALLY NO ONE sat there the next 40 minutes until we left. It is definitely a classic Austin location that I hope will be around forever! I don't drink beer but they had some great drink specials for those who do. One of my friends was able to get a non-alcoholic beer, the other had a beer, and I had a couple of topo chicos. I think you can also order food there, but we didn't order anything. They also have decent parking options if not in their lot, on the street so we didn't have to walk too far. And I appreciated that Jane was playing at an earlier time. Her band's songs were oldies but goodies and they got several people out on the dance floor! I hope to find myself at Carousel Lounge again soon!

Very spacious inside. Drink prices are of a bygone era- they only sell beer and wine for alcohol options. Sound equipment was good I'm told. A classic spot.

The decor here is super fun and I really liked the mirrors. Nothing like a fun mirror or two for a couple of laughs. But, here's the thing, when we stopped by it wasn't busy at all. In fact there was another couple that left not long after we arrived and a group of four that arrived a few minutes before we left. I bring this up because this means the bartender wasn't busy. Like at all. Yet seemed annoyed to have to make a drink and chat while doing so. With that said, I might give it another go only because the layout was so great. It's just that people might not realize there's a cool bar inside the Alamo drafthouse in Mueller. It's huge but I've only seen it crowded on comedy show nights. We went in on a Friday night recently and had the huge place to ourselves! They have a full bar with a good selection. The bartenders are stingy with their liquor pours, but that's not a huge issue for me. I bet you can order from the regular Alamo menu which has awesome food! I'll have to try that next time. I don't recommend the comedy shows, but that's just because I don't think saying super offensive shit is funny. If you are good with laughing at things people shouldn't say out loud, then you might love it! I'd rather go on a quiet night when I can hear and laugh at the funny stuff others in my group say. Either way, check it out!

We love bringing our own card game to play while enjoying the great food and drinks. Every time we've visited, we've said we're going to try one of the many games they have available, but we end up getting so caught up in our own game that we never do! It's still fun watching the staff enthusiastically teach other groups how to play new games, and it really adds to the welcoming atmosphere. The cocktails are outstanding. We both enjoy Old Fashioneds, and Vigilante makes one of the best Old Fashioneds I've had in the Austin area. We've also tried several of their other cocktails, and every one has been exceptionally well crafted. The food has been just as delicious. We usually order a couple of our favorite staples along with something from the rotating menu, and we've yet to be disappointed. What really sets Vigilante apart, though, is the staff. Every employee we've interacted with has been genuinely friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and fun to talk to. They proactively check on us throughout the evening, offer great recommendations for both food and drinks, and are always happy to answer questions about the menu or games. The call button at each table is also a great touch. It makes it easy to get service when you need it without interrupting your game. It's not often that you find a place that consistently delivers great drinks, great food, excellent service, and such a unique atmosphere, but Vigilante does exactly that. It's quickly become one of our favorite date night spots, and we've already recommended it to several friends. We'll definitely be back.

We reserved the room on a Sunday for 2 1/2 hours, and since no one had it booked after us, they graciously let us hang out a little longer, which we really appreciated. The menu looks extensive at first because it's several pages long, but only the first couple of pages are food and drinks--the rest are game options. The food was good, although we were disappointed to find out they were out of fried pickles! There are so many games to choose from that it can feel a little overwhelming at first, but the staff does a great job explaining everything and helping you get started. I knew I wanted a burger from the Crown before I started the long drive from South Carolina. Despite a literal wrench in my tire, I managed to make it there on 2/28 by 1pm, where my travelling companion and I met up with an old friend of mine from college. There was a bike swap going on, which felt about right for ATX. We ordered a beer and a burger then settled in on the porch (the part I call the "inside/outside" because it has a roof). I'm not going to say the Crown has the best burgers in the world. I guess it depends on what you want in a burger. I will say that, for the price, the Crown has the best pub burger - a good basic burger. I got a jalapeno cheeseburger, but I can attest to the deliciousness of the veggie burger and the mushroom-swiss. Back in the early 90s we used to bring my daughter with us and she would play pinball with my friend, Dirk. The bartenders at the time included a couple of guys who used to work at Duddley's Draw in College Station, TX. In the early oughts, I would come in for lunch and try to decide if I wanted the chicken tacos or a burger. Later I came in with the guy I was dating for too long for beers and a burger. Times change, Austin grows (parts are completely unrecognizable and no longer have that "vibe" that seems uniquely Austin; however, the Crown is a jewel in the rough that continues to shine for those of us who can see it. I had an awkward piece of time on 3/4/26 so I stopped by for a NA Guinness before heading out to see my aunt in Lakeway. I had the pleasure of seeing Derwin! My trip wouldn't have been complete without saying "hi." It took a minute, but he did eventually remember me! Here's to hoping it doesn't take another 8 years; because, we only get older and my friends are starting to show their age! I hope the Crown continues to serve great burgers and cold beers. I'll be back next time I make the pilgrimage home!
