Fantastic non-touristy pub with live music and great bartenders like Carlos who make the afternoon…read morememorable. Don't just go to Temple Bar when in Dublin. In fact skip that and venture out. This is very close walking distance to Jameson, so a great after distillery experience.

Know what you're getting into before coming here…read more My girlfriend and I were jonesing for some Irish music done by the locals and were told all around town this was one of the places that has it on a regular basis. Upon entering it was pretty packed, and my girlfriend and I were searching for the live music and where the band was going to set up if indeed there was going to be live music. Now here is where it gets funny my yelp friends, when we searched the outside bar area and still couldn't find it, I went up to the bar and asked one of the bartenders when do the musicians arrive and his reply was, " they are in the corner over there playing already." The three-person band was playing very softly and in the most far-reaching left side of the bar hidden away. You could not really hear it and when I say the place was jammed pack with people near them, I am not joking, we could barely see them. I had half a beer here as my girlfriend and I weren't in the mood to stand the whole time to music we could barely hear. I appreciate that this is an old bar that people frequent, kind of reminded me of the dive bars in Philly to a degree but just know what you are in for before coming if this is the bar you ultimately choose for a night out. As always people SYOY!!!!

Anyway the main north-south street this is off of, is called Stonyblatter. A block south of here(including past the intersection the Luas Tram passes through, closest tram stop is Smithfield), this street is called Blackhall Place, including when that street intersects with the street the Luas tram runs on(no stop right there). Yep another one of those Dublin(and honestly, noticed it in other parts of Ireland too) things, where it can minorly throw you off vs. if you're used to cities where the street names stay the same throughout the city(with some exceptions in Chicago) for the most part. Also, I think the proper spelling for this bar may be Walshes, but am not 100% sure on that. Anyway it's worth it to try to go out of your way to come here, since this was my very favorite pub experience of any bar I visited in Dublin. It didn't seem like any food is served here besides bagged food snacks like chips, but correct me if I'm wrong Yelpers. The locals are very friendly here, and I even can forgive the one patron who incorrectly told me the country of one of the 2 teams playing in the soccer game I saw being televised here(my dad corrected me, on the country of that team being somewhere in eastern Europe). That patron got the country of the other team right though, which was Scotland. The individual rooms of this bar are very cool and comfortable to sit in, and the relaxed atmosphere is amazing. If how tricky and out of the way to walk to this bar keeps away the more annoying tourists, I'm alright with that!

The authentic Victorian setting, the Victorian mahogany fittings, the mosaic marble tiled floors and granite tabletops, the mahogany bar, capped with red Connemara marble, follows the classic Victorian architectural pattern. The staff are helpful, friendly and patient since their accent is hard to understand sometime. My 1st beer and 1st Irish food, all I can say is what a meal, just simple delish. Being here is just a wondrous experience, the place is cosy, warm and the friendly of the people. So glad I picked this place as my first of Dublin.

Tucked down Dame Court just off Dame Street, The Stag's Head is one of those rare pubs that feels genuinely historic rather than designed to look old. The building dates to the late 1800s, and the interior retains the ornate features of a classic Victorian "gin palace"--rich carved wood, stained glass, brass rails, and a warm, glowing bar that feels wonderfully preserved. We stopped in around 4:30 pm, which turned out to be a perfect time to visit. There were other patrons enjoying drinks and food, but the atmosphere was calm and relaxed rather than loud or rowdy. It felt like the kind of place where locals drop in for a quiet pint on their way home from work before the evening crowd arrives. The staff were excellent--friendly, welcoming, and attentive without being intrusive. The food was very good (we failed to take photos because we were too busy enjoying it). As a vegetarian, I was thrilled to see the Impossible burger front and center on their menu; it was deliciously prepared with guacamole on a brioche bun, and not an afterthought on the menu. My companions both chose the Irish Beef Burger, and said it was excellent. One thing to know: this is a traditional Victorian pub, so cocktails aren't really part of the program. Expect beer, wine, or spirits rather than mixed drinks. In a place like this, that actually feels exactly right. Other pubs do serve mixed drinks. Between the history, the ambience, the quality of the food, and the wonderful staff, The Stag's Head is the kind of place that makes you feel like you've experienced a real piece of Dublin.

It was a good recommendation. It was close to a stop so we hopped off and had lunch. The restrauant is very neat with a cool vibe. We arrived about 1 p.m. and had to sit at the bar for about ten minutes for a table to open up. The restrauant is not on the tourist path (think Temple Bar area). We may have been the only non-Irish in the restrauant. It is rich in history and has a traditional Irsh look and feel. We ordered a couple of beers. Jan ordered a Blue Moon and I ordered a Carlsberg Pilsner. The beer on tap selection is impressive. For lunch we ordered a couple of items to share. Jan picked fish and chips, I selected calamari. Both were good and we enjoyed our first meal in Dublin. The service was good, the prices moderate. Definitely recommend it is you want a restrauant/pub that's not full of Americans.

I had the Guinness beef stew & it was some of the best I had on my whole trip. They served it with a generous portion of mashed potatoes down in the stew gravy so you can enjoy both with every bite. I definitely recommend giving this place a try especially if you want to get away from the louder pubs and just enjoy your meal.
