As a wee child and teenager, it was the location of choice to celebrate birthdays and holidays. As a college-aged adult in training, it was the place to meet up with friends, share some drinks, and watch Jerry dance on top of the bar. Even now, as a married man in his thirties, living a ten-hour drive away, I make it a goal to enjoy Nine Irish Brothers once per year at the very least. When my childhood best friend of eighteen straight years passed away, this location marked the final stop in the bar crawl that was held in his honor. When another friend had bravely "come out" only to be to rejected by some of his religious friends, Nine Irish was the place where my wife and I were able to sit down with him over some Guinness and goat cheese fritters and show him how much we love him. The food and drinks are fantastic, and the memories are forever. Whether you've lived in Lafayette/West Lafayette all your life, you're new to the area, or you're just passing through, I cannot recommend this pub enough--no matter your age. O'Bryan's Nine Irish Brothers is one of a kind. Sláinte!

It's not the tenderloin I had as a kid, but it's a delight for a grown-up. I really like this place, and so does my wife.

I came to BoilerUP Bar when my family and I visited campus for the Purdue/OSU men's basketball game back in February. I've stayed at the Union Club Hotel many times, but this was the first time post renovations. BoilerUP Bar is a cocktail and whiskey bar in the Purdue Memorial Union and apparently serve some bar eats. We came here for drinks on a Saturday night after having dinner at Walkon's in the basement. The place was packed (expected) at around 7pm and seating is first come first serve, but we were able to Eagle-Eye/Hawk at spot (kindly ask the leaving party to sit down as they are leaving). Yes this is definitely a thing and it's called "smart dining". If you follow me on Yelp, then you should know I am a Bourbon Enthusiast and Old Fashioned's are my favorite cocktails. They are very simple with ingredients, but they are extremely difficult to master and I think they are a great test for any Mixologist. So I had the BoilerUP Signature Old Fashioned and the Spiced Winter Old Fashioned. Both were very excellent and they were served with some big rocks (great to see). After a night out, I came back and I had a nightcap at the bar before closing. They have an ok whiskey list. Not as amazing as 648 Bourbon & Cigar Lounge across the river. But I was able to find one of my favorite unicorns on the whiskey list, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, and the best part was it was only $15 for a 2oz pour, which is pretty difficult to find at that price nationwide (Cost of living is a tad different in Chicago). Service was mixed. I believe our waitress serving us gave me the wrong drink as I ordered the BoilerUP Signature Old Fashioned first, but it was definitely the Spiced Winter Old Fashioned because I could taste the syrup. However, I was ok with it because I liked it anyways. So that is why I ended up ordering the BoilerUP Signature Old Fashioned again and it was correct. It's easy to mix up as all Old Fashioned's pretty much look similar and the drink was excellent. Our waitress was friendly and service was good as well so really no issues besides a small mix up. When I sat at the bar before closing, the bartender was friendly and service was a ok. Overall, the BoilerUP Bar is a GREAT addition to West Lafayette! Price is definitely no quarter bottles at the old Where Else, but this is more suited place for alumni and I am perfectly fine with that! Ambience is small/intimate and great for date night. So if you are in the area, you should definitely check this place out!

Sadly the…read moremenu has wildly bloated numbers double what many similar restaurants offer, Town and Gown, Bistro 501, RedSeven deliver and reach above expectations unlike the dull expensive dry roast recently eaten this past week. I cannot comprehend this place, after four visits with friends, unable to recommend any dish or drink as a standout win up against the cost. Let me nail down each dish we had this past Wednesday, the grilled bacon was entirely fine, quite tough but nice fatty flavors, I like Teay's River candied bacon app better. Oyster was good, east coast briny does me right. Our Old Fashioneds were insanely expensive without offering any memorable flavors, balance seemed restrained neither giving a forward bite or a smooth sweetness. Strawberry Lemon sprits was similar, an overpriced kid's slushy. Asparagus was fine. Potato sides surprisingly flavorless, we all couldn't believe how dull the potatoes were. My sister's salmon looked half the size of Town and Gown's while costing fifty percent more and offering half the food. She did finish the ocean protein but left most of the rice. Thankfully the desserts were better, bread pudding somewhat dry and needing a sparkle of that smooth actual pudding but the winner was definitely the key lime. Rich and dense, dreamy and tangy, I got happy! Sure the atmosphere and staff is enjoyable, providing some fresh city vibes compared to the homely and old school Mountain Jacks. However Jacks and Mcgraws Steakhouse both do far better as culinary is concerned. Would be exciting to see this place fix up their inconsistency, out of touch pricing, or they'll be the next to go the way of Bowen Bistro during the next economic crash.

Salmon, as across the city, is only a deal at Town and Gown (finish that remodel please!) yet compared to 9 Irish, 8Eleven, Boilerhouse Prime, and The Lawrence, The Tap is a bargain. I highly recommend getting some samples! I typically need two to four drafts to splash down to check out every changing options, white porters, festbiers, black lagers, spiced ales, fruity beers, and ciders easily overwhelm the casual sipper. The big surprise win that actually got me back to The Tap this year is Sunking's Amber Has Two Mom's, a complex and unrivaled red ale I need to find now that it's gone. There is an unfortunate gluten heavy hand over most of the menu, dairy, and high carbs pervade perhaps to combat BAC. Gluten free crust is offered for pizza and buns but no such options for apps or wraps. Surprisingly the ahi, burger of the month, their sauces, especially the pesto, are fantastic! Parking can be tricky but there's plenty of street and garage options. I had given up with the trivia allowing cheaters to prosper, perhaps that has been addressed. Rewards program is awkward, unable to check points or browse deals without the app. There are few better outdoor dining spots for people watching and taking in the Purdue vibes however the picnic tables are not so stable or comfortable. Plenty of space inside, private room in the back, massive bar offers literally hundreds of options and most any day can pour nearly any style imaginable; and the staff this fall is well trained and friendly. Excited to see The Tap back for me!

It was a great place to have a nice solo steak dinner in West Lafayette. I don't eat steak often, but when I do, I want it to be amazing. And my steak was amazing! I got the 8-ounce Linz Heritage filet, Sam Allen style, which meant that it also came with grilled shrimp and a chimichurri. Yum yum yum to all three things. I usually order my steak medium-well, but the server suggested medium, so I went with it. Good choice! My server was very wise, even though he looked like he was still in college. Along with the steak, I got a side of grilled mushrooms, which came in a brown sauce with chives sprinkled on top. But first: I started with an heirloom tomato salad, which was served with stracciatella cheese, basil and these cool balls that looked like roe, but were actually balls of balsamic vinegar. Fancy! It was fresh and light, and the perfect appetizer to get during a summer in Indiana, when them tomatoes be poppin'. I don't know why I'm reviewing my meal backward, but just go with me, people. Before everything, you get complimentary rolls and butter. Oh man! I could have made a meal just from the bread and butter, both of which were tender and soft, and so salty and flavorful. At the very beginning of my meal, I started with an Old Fashioned, because I read that Boilerhouse Prime is known for their Old Fashioneds. This one was well balanced, and came with a nice bourbon cherry. I also got a glass of Malbec along the way with my meal, which went well with my steak. This seems like an adults-only restaurant, but I was sitting close to a big table that had a family with kids, so well-behaved kids are definitely allowed, even though I did not see a kids menu.

The fries were excellent: mostly crispy, but every so often a couple of mealy and soft fries were discovered, which was nice. The Caesar salad was good, and it came with whole croutons, which is typical. But really, The Black Sparrow? Your Caesar salad could have been elevated to excellent if the croutons were crushed into bread crumbs! Just saying! The Caesar had a lot of freshly grated parmesan cheese, which was a nice touch. A good Caesar salad needs a lotta parm, in my opinion. I just sat at the bar, so all I know is that rectangular space at the counter. Is there a restaurant beyond the bar at The Black Sparrow?
