Varsity from my understanding has been a staple of downtown Atlantas fast food scene for decades so when I saw in Eater that Varsity was a good place to try I jumped when I saw this location on our way to Dahlonega Wine Country. We stopped by after wine tasting and noticed how clean the place was. There was someone surveying the dining area picking up trash and wiping tables down. The cashier was also noticeably friendly and helpful when we told them it was our first time. He made a few suggestions and we tried most of what he mentioned. As for the food, it was okay. Not really blown away but like any fast food restaurant I was expecting that. The burgers and hotdog were small for the price I felt. The rings were on the greasy side and the burgers needed something to cut the grease. The cashier did offer some fresh onions and by adding that to our food it did help quite a bit. As for the drink we tried the orange cream smoothie and it was not my favorite. The smoothie was very thick and you needed a spoon to really drink it which too me was really good. As for the pies, they were also good. Reminded me of the dollar pies you would get at the grocery store. Not bad but not good. My favorite Varsity other than the North Avenue location. I love Varsity Chili dogs with chopped onions, fries and a Varsity orange and every few weeks, I pull off 400 heading to the lake and get my Varsity fix. This place is always quick, efficient and the food is true downtown Varsity good and reminds me of my childhood. And unlike the terrible Varsity with the "couldn't care less" employees at the C terminal in the Atlanta airport, the Dawsonville employees have that same "geterdone" attitude you used to see back in the 60s on North Avenue when the legendary Erby Walker ran the "what you have" counter and moved found and customer quickly through the line. Glad the Varsity in Dawsonville is still quickly pushing out the dogs, burgers and great Varsity fries. The best place to get my Varsity fix, top off my oil and adjust my grease. Well let's say it's not quite like the one downtown but it does have the same food. I found it to me lacking in taste, quality and price. I feel it was overpriced for what it is and that I was paying for the name and the hat. Heck I didn't even get a what will you have, what will you have. We got the comb mix of a cheeseburger and chili dog with fries and a drink and then onion rings in place of fries for the other. It was around $30 for the 2 combos. I felt for the price I could have gone to a sit down restaurant and had batter quality and taste. As you can see from the pics not great looking and pretty much tasted as it looks. We live nearby and haven't been in years since last time it didn't leave us going that was great! My husband loves this place. So I decided to give it a try. We had to do through the drive thru because the dining room was closed. Once we got our food, we parked in front of the restaurant and ate our food. I had the slaw dog with French fries. The fries were the best part. They were good. The slaw dog was okay. Nothing special. The fries were hot but my hot dog was luke warm. Maybe I could have enjoyed it better if it was hot. I probably would not try this place again. read more

I love the Varsity! This location is a little different. But still is great when I am craving some rings and a chili dog and chili steak. The service was great and fast at the drive through. Food was good. To go packaging was great. With all the condiments needed included. The only issue I had was the price. Was like $15 for a combo......... Nothing extra. Great little Georgia-exclusive dive. Staff was friendly and food was served quick as can be. The upkeep of the location left a little to be desired- many tables were still messy long after being left, the playground area was completely gutted, and I noticed (felt) several leaks as I ate. However, despite being a chain, their quality of food is a cut above other fast food joints. Indeed, while their burgers are fantastic, I was blown away by the quality of their onion rings: simply some of the best I've ever had! I don't understand how this place is still in business. The burger tasted like some kind of fake meat made of soy and dog. The bun was smashed and generally one of the worst looking hamburgers ever. The onion rings that came with the meal were fried in old nasty oil and tasted horrible. Check out the pictures. Last but not least, I ordered peach iced tea. There was no taste of peach and the tea also tasted old and like their tea maker had never been cleaned. For a price of $10, there are far better places to eat in this area. We love going here, but it would be so much better if you could go back to eating in the dining room. We love their chili dogs. They really don't need to much done to make them amazing. Honestly food was very mid. This place was recommend to me by a friend. When I saw the burger I was like uh...it was so small with tiny burger patties. It tasted like obviously a normal hamburger but dang I could have made a fat hamburger at home or go to like culver's and got a nice burger. While the original in downtown Atlanta on North Avenue across from Georgia Tech is the standard (and you haven't experienced Atlanta without visiting there at least once), the junior locations like this one in Dawsonville serve the same great food with more convenience. I had the pleasure of introducing someone to the Varsity my last visit. The drive thru was busy but moved well given the amount of cars. I was most impressed with who took orders that day; we ordered food for about 6 people and got everything we ordered without needing to repeat what was ordered. The food is always delicious! My go to is #2, which is a chili cheeseburger, chili cheese dog, order of onion rings and upgrading my drink to a frosted orange (FO), with an extra order or fries for good measure. We all enjoyed our meals, but don't make this a weekly habit due to all the grease! If you have to only choose a few items, go with a dog or 2 (dress it however you want or take it naked, there's no wrong way), grab some onion rings and an FO! Your doctor will probably tell you to stay away but sometimes you just have to have a good chili-double cheeseburger or chili dog with cheese. Of course the Onion Rings are always cooked to perfection and can't be passed up. The Dawsonville store is always clean and well staffed. The staff are efficient, helpful and friendly. Burgers are bad and chili dogs can be lethal, yet they continue to sell 1000's daily. It's FUN TO VISIT THE VARSITY. Service is agreeable and it's chrome stainless steel clean. I've been to the Varsity in downtown Atlanta and the one in Kennesaw. It's really good all American food. I was out shopping at the outlet mall and saw that there's a Varsity in Dawsonville. So I came here for food after shopping. Big mistake. The cashier was rude, the hamburger buns were stale, the meat tasted freezer burned, and the onion rings were soggy. Yuck. read more

I haven't been to The Varsity in ATL since I was a kid. Figured I'd try the one in Dawson. I've got to say that I've never had a worse burger in my entire life. I had a double cheeseburger that was almost $4. It tasted like a cheap frozen Walmart brand burger. No taste. I had 3 pieces of something hard in the meat that popped on my teeth. Almost like a small piece of gravel. Obviously it's not gravel but it's just cheap low quality meat. I wouldn't feed that food to someone in a third world country and I have no idea why The Varsity is in business or why anybody would ever go there more than once. Varsity, close your doors and stop selling that trash to people. read more
