I've been here twice and had great experiences both times! They pour strong and serve up some great food at unheard of prices. I think there is live music most weekend nights, so if you're looking to do a lot of talking, probably avoid Friday/Saturday nights. But if you're looking for cheap entertainment, this is the way to go! The bartender last night was so attentive and helpful despite serving tables and working the bar. Great place that I highly recommend you check out!

I have to admit that the first time I decided to try this place I got as far as the front door and thought to myself "this is a little too much of a dive"....so I turned around and left. Months later a good friend of mine I will call Gordon, asked me to meet him for breakfast at this "great spot called The Valley". Thinking "what the hell do I have to lose" I told him I would meet him there. Not only is the food pretty damn good but the staff WOW...super nice and very personable. Now it's on my gotta take my wife list and see what she, a REAL foodie thinks of the place. The neighborhood is just a little "shady" with what appears to be homeless (my meager attempt at being socially sensitive) walking the street and, at least for me, fearing for the safety of my car parked where I couldn't keep my eye on it..... according to Gordon the did have one issue with a person walking into tge restaurant and causing a scene and breaking some item and talking off before police arrived (can you imagine that?) But rest assured, I plan on a return visit very soon and once settled in found that it filled up with local folk who all seemed to get along fine.

Locals' joint and a great "dive bar" venue. Good service, good sandwiches and a friendly neighborhood type vibe... our kind of place. Went here to pick up sandwiches on my son's strong recommendation and ended up having a beer on the outdoor patio out back. Since my wife is a non- drinker and willing DD, a few turned into three. We'd still be there if my two grandsons were not waiting for their dinner. The sandwiches were all very well constructed. They looked like there was too much bread vs. ingredients, but turned out to be perfectly balanced. Our to-go: The Brutus - My favorite - Pepperoni, salami, ham, cheddar and swiss cheese on a French hoagie with fresh tomatoes and Caesar dressing. Dockside Dip - Thinly sliced roast beef topped with Swiss cheese on a French hoagie & a side of au jus. Valley Cheesesteak - Thinly sliced roast beef, American and cream cheese with grilled onions served on a French hoagie. Really enjoyed this place. My son's recommendation was spot-on. Note: 21 and over only... leave your much loved anchors at home.

That's suppose to be a Ruben. I took the top off. Super tasty, but about a third of the meat a Ruben deserves.

I'm 99% sure it didn't have croutons buried in the middle, but she freaked out that her fork hit something crunchy and hard. Was most likely bacon but whatever. (The bacon was cooked too crispy perfection visually). She lost it. He didn't argue and had her another one made with the bacon on the side. Kuddos to him. While I fully sympathize with her concerns with gluten, she didn't fish out an actual crouton to show. The 3 cheese burger is absolutely a must! Personally I recommend salt and vinegar chips with it... Great mocktail options and they were happy to make anything off menu for me! Parking is tough but 100000% recommend checking this place out.

I met Jessie and Camille amongst sweet people. So very friendly. Their food options were special. I loved their simple hamburger and adored the dill pickle dip, I went home that night and found a similar recipe and made it for a party at my niece's. If you ever get up there, please find the time to stop by. I swear you won't regret it. This bar was established in 1935!!

I've been to Sidepony, the Mule's sister bar, which I absolutely love, so I've been dying to get in here! We finally got the chance before a Rainiers game recently and had a great experience. It's definitely bigger than I expected but the vibe is awesome. Like Sidepony, the decor is super eclectic and fun. There's a photobooth as well which is a fun touch. The back patio space is also really cool - it's also dark as it's covered, so I imagine it gets pretty warm back there in the hotter summer days. They don't have a giant food menu but they have a few sandwiches to choose from. We both got their grilled cheese which you can never go wrong with. Another notable part of our visit was the bartender - he was so nice! Extremely personable and handled holding down the entire bar by himself, including the cooking. Definitely will be added into our dive rotation. Can't wait to come back!

In our defense it seemed like every time we drove by it it looked like they weren't open and the other half of the time they were open but we had to be somewhere else and couldn't commit to a stop. Well it finally happened and we are so glad it did. We made it into the iconic giant coffee pot building and had a blast enjoying it's quirky atmosphere and dive bar vibe. There once used to be monkeys behind glass way back when. We saw where they were once located in the back which adds to the history of the place. Some people may not know that since it isn't attention grabbing at this point and the monkeys are long gone but it definitely adds to the oddity of it. The Java Jive serves food which is a nice perk. I had a pretty decent B.L.T. sandwich and they have an exclusive beer dedicated just to the Java Jive by Sig Brewing named Bob's Light Lager. It's a tasty one too and kind of indicates the long history the Java Jive has for the area. We took all kinds of pictures of the unusual atmosphere and had a blast doing it. For film buffs the Java Jive appeared in several films, Say Anything (1989), I love You To Death (1990), Three Fugitives (1989) and 10 Things I Hate About You (1999). The Java Jive is also on the Tacoma Historic Register and the National Register of Historic Places. We are going a return visit there tonight (12/05/25) for a friend's book release party. Happy to report that it is. First thing we noticed was that parking was interesting - there's not really a lot at all, but a solid block or so worth of street parking and we got lucky with one really close to the entrance. Service was good from the jump and they had a solid selection of drinks to choose from. We weren't there for food at all but I think I remember seeing a simple menu with a few typical bar food options. They've got a pool table here as well as a good amount of dart boards. Darts is our game of choice when we're out so we were stoked to see they had quite a few because a good amount of people were playing on a Friday early evening. Funny story - I happened to text my mom and tell her where we were and she told me that it was one of HER old stomping grounds back in the day and she sent me photos of herself with the owner... Who just happened to be there! I went over and introduced myself to him and he said he could already recognize who I was and how much he missed my mom! The rest of the staff ALSO knew who my mom was so clearly the team there has been around for a while. We chatted with a few other patrons here and they were all super nice and welcoming.
