I happened across this business when the shop wasn't even open, but there was a sign at the door that said, "If you walk by and I'm here, I will sell you wine." I had no intention of buying wine, but the sign was clearly speaking to me. I went in and the owner, Savannah, was so fun and friendly to chat with. She helped me find great wines of my liking, and shared info about local tastings and which vineyards to try while I was in town. She even had a few bottles open for a few samplings. Savannah has so much knowledge and passion about wine that you too will be just as enthused to learn and try more. There is a nice selection to choose from, and fantastic pricing -- especially on imported wines. I left with 4 bottles of wine and highly recommend stopping by if you're near the area. 5+++ for the really incredible food, 5+++ for the service. Both were tip-top. I liked the inventive twists on NOLA cuisine and everyone loved what they had. Blistered shishito peppers with kimchi aoli (whaaat??), oysters with lots of butter, garlic, and parm, a Ruben that subbed roasted beets for the pastrami... the list went on. And the salad... Oh, the fresh local greens with sun-dried cherry tomato slices, chilled sautéed onions, and a light lemony vinaigrette. All were knock-your-socks-off good. And very reasonable. The place is definitely substance over style; you go because the food is amazing, the people are nice, and the service is remarkably well informed about the wines, the food; all of it. Wow. Just had one of the best meals of recent memory at Valkyrie tonight. We came with a friend who is very familiar with New Orleans cuisine, and he was also impressed. Started with a couple orders of the charbroiled oysters along with a deep fried cauliflower appetizer, both were phenomenal! I had the Halibut entree, which came with on a bed of roasted poblano grits, the grits alone were the best thing I had all evening, absolutely delicious, the Halibut and roasted green beans were very good, but the grits were fab! The owner served us, she was great, funny, and clearly really passionate about her food. We will definitely be back. read more

Our family lives in Independence and we really enjoy stopping by here for drinks and good food. It's a wide open space, great for small or large groups, and it doesn't take too long to get your food. Wow this spot in little Independence! One of the owners was our server and we got a variety of dishes to share and the best service! Wow, all were fantastic. The grilled oysters in butter and Parmesan, the smoked butter and bread, the chanterelles and pasta, and the steak... oh yeah amazing! In addition, they have an excellent wine selection by the glass and bottle. We had some local wines and also a Torrontes from Argentina which was lovely! A local MUST. Been here a couple times. Food lacks consistency. Last time the portions were so tiny, we had to go get something to eat after we left. Not impressed with the owner running around in shorts so short her ass cheeks hung out the bottom. Kinda gross. Not happy with these changes and poor attitude right up until tip time. My partner and I love the Valkyrie. Samantha is a great host and her staff are very attentive. The menu is intriguing, inventive and tasty. The steaks are juicy and tender and cooked in this amazing oven imported from England, the deep fried oysters and game hen are just so delicious, and don't forget the roasted vegetables. They are amazing like - beets and olives. Try them all. I wish we could come here every night. If you want to go to a cool, stripped down, authentic and inviting place in an old quirky building in a quiet and cute town on the Willamette River. Look no further. read more

My wife and I decided to try this place on a recommendation from a friend. Walked in and self seated per sign. Grabbed a menu from the bar since they don't have servers. Wine was pretty spendy, and fairly limited for a "wine bar." Music was was loud offensive rap, and totally out of character. Menu was small and seemed expensive for mostly appetizers. We ended up walking out without even ordering. Not so much as an acknowledgement from any of the staff. Very disappointed. read more
