I went to the UPS Store at 603 West 115th Street around 7:10 PM on a Wednesday to pick up a package. According to their listed hours, the store closes at 8 PM but the door was already locked when I arrived. I knocked, and an employee emerged from the back, completely ignored me, and proceeded to make a phone call. While still on the phone, he opened the door, but only to let himself out, and casually told me, "We're closed for the day." There were still 50 minutes left before closing. I understand if he needed to take a call, but at the very least, acknowledge the customer. I waited about 2 minutes for him to finish, but ended up walking away because the phone conversation was laced with vulgar language and unprofessional behavior. I'll return another day to pick up my package, but this kind of treatment is unacceptable. A basic level of courtesy and respect goes a long way, and unfortunately, this store failed to show either. read more

I won an auction at Sotheby's NYC, but I live in California and needed to have the items shipped to me. Sotheby's was going to charge me more for shipping than the actual items I won, but they recommended this UPS store UPSNYCAuctions@gmail.com as an alternative shipper. They gave me a quote at a fraction of the cost of Sotheby's, and after signing some paperwork, the items were picked up, packed, and shipped to me. Everything was packaged really well, and I am happy with their service. I definitely recommend them and will be using them again. read more

UPDATE: The store manager refunded the entire amount which I appreciate very much and I have upgraded my rating accordingly. As corporations under the same umbrella it seems clear that UPS and the UPS Store do not communicate, nor do they operate well together for the customer's convenience. I shipped a very important legal document Next Day Air to FL w/signature required. The lone UPS Store employee did not know how to do it and managed to lock up the computer system. He had to call 3 people and send screenshots of his computer to someone in order to get it resolved. Once they got instructions they completed the transaction. It cost $135 to ship a 10 page document. The package has still not been delivered and as of this writing is 24 hours late. Tracking indicates that it arrived in Jacksonville, FL within 24 hours but is now just sitting in some facility with no action being taken. I spoke with UPS directly and the told me that they can't help me get a UPS package delivered because I shipped it via UPS at a UPS Store. They told me to contact the store directly so I called the store and the manager (apparently the only person who can help) is out and might be back tomorrow. In the end it will be at least 48 hours late if not more. My advice: if you want to ship something valuable or important don't do it at a UPS Store because if it gets lost UPS and the UPS Store will simply point fingers at the other and will not help you resolve the problem. read more

It takes a certain level of skill to handle 3 customers while simultaneously providing quotes and shipping information to an angry customer over the phone. This location is small but efficient. I've dropped off several packages here and it's always been a seem less process, I appreciate efficiency. It's sucks that they don't seem to have more than two people working here at any given time, for a location in this area I'd imagine it's tough on the staff. This one is a completely opposite experience from the one in Harlem on the 116th Street (that got a 1 star from me.) Columbia is lucky to have Jimmy, Jeff and Andy around; I surely am as a Columbia student. This UPS Store would be the best one in NYC in my opinion. Fast service, even faster moving queues - thanks to the staff at this store. Specifically, Jimmy took care of my packaging and drop offs and it was an excellent experience. Kudos Jimmy and the Store itself. Did I mention cozy and homely? Andres' (Andy) management is splendid. *one star off cause as usual - sometimes packing prices can be, well you know what to expect from the UWS (that's upper west side btw.). Packages had been getting stolen from the lobby of my building, so I asked that the ones that were being delivered by UPS be delivered to this store. I got 3 pick up notices with deadlines of the 15 th, 16 th and 20 th. The package that needed to be picked up by the 20 th arrived at the store on the 13 th. I had been out of town and got there the morning of the 15 th. The package with the December 20 th deadline, plus one other, had already been shipped back to the sender. No apology. Unless you plan to pick up the package the day that it arrives, it is very risky to have them redirected to this store. Very disorganized and gives misinformation. read more

Shipping something? This place is ok. Want passport photos? Don't waste your time. For starters, the people really don't give a crap about their job, are slow and not particularly helpful. The photos they take are from a hand held digital camera. The result is ok photos, but photos that are NOT usable for passport. Might you get away with these? yes. A lousy experience this morning! I arrive at 8 am, opening time, to find the store completely dark, empty, and locked. No one answered the phone. I emailed the store and got a reply at 8:27 that there was a scheduling error and someone would arrive in 20 minutes. At 9 am I wrote again explaining that the store was still closed and that several of us waiting had 9 am meetings and places to be. I provided my phone number and asked if the manager could call to help brainstorm some solutions (perhaps someone could bring me my package later in the day or he could give more realistic info about when the store would open. He replied only that "the employee should be there already" even though he clearly wasn't. Several of us had to wait until 9:20 -- 80 minutes of waiting -- before someone finally arrived. Since I needed my package this morning, I had no other choice. Frustrated that the manager wasn't more available to resolve the issue in a timely way and/or to brainstorm solutions for those of us who were relying on dependable service. A really lousy way to start my morning before a busy day of moving apartments -- and really wasn't expecting this curveball from a store that prides itself on delivering convenience and reliable service. read more

An absolutely horrible place to do business with. I would avoid at all costs. I won a lot of small drawings at auction and was quoted what I thought was a high price of $95.00. Then I received a second quote that was $30.00 less. I was told that her colleague made a mistake and that the drawings would not fit into such a small box. I received the box today. A small box. They wrapped the 100 year old drawings in tissue paper and laid them between two sheets of bubble wrap. No extra protection. No cardboard. And these are "fine art" shippers? Please. Possibly one of the worst run businesses around Columbia University... Initially in the summer 2009 when I first dealt with this UPS Store it was relatively well run and the employees/managers appropriately handled most situations. The store since then has over time fallen into functional disrepair mostly due to inept employees including the current manager, and notably a failure to appropriately manage their relationship with the US Postal Service. Since then I've had a variety of problems that seem to never end... Everything from hostile/lazy employees attempting to close early, as much as 20 minutes prior to the listed closing time to outrightly losing packages delivered (via their mailbox service) and packages (again via the mailbox service) that were misdelivered or returned to sender for no other reason then inept employees. The store has a major problem with the US Postal Service in that USPS often attempts to deliver packages or mail after business hours because the store is on highly residential street, rather then reaching out to USPS to resolve issues with undelivered packages they pass the buck to the customer, paying upwards of close to $50 a month for mailbox services, to manage the situation. read more

Took a bike in here to ship with some skepticism based on the other reviews. I expected to pay about $80-$90 to ship it to North Carolina. There was no line and they took me right away. The quote to ship the bike was $189, which I thought was outrageous, and more to the point, I don't think is anywhere near what UPS would actually charge to ship it. This UPS store is the pits. Staff are rude, disrespectful and pride themselves on being as anti customer focussed as possible. Having worked in the quality field for 30 years I would either train the staff to deliver the quality of service expected to generate repeat business or move the existing staff out. If it was me they would all be gone. The owner should send some friends in with a postage pro elm and see what they think of the customer service. Twice I've had packages delivered here (actually the same thing, twice), about 10 months apart, and twice I've dealt with the most pleasant customer service representatives on the island of Manhattan. I wish I could remember names, but the young man and women who work at this store are very courteous. It seems their mission to brighten the day of whoever walks through the door. The young man of the most recent experience actually bumped into me a few blocks down the street, an hour after I dropped in looking for my package, and let me know that it had just arrived. Tucked neatly away on 115th street, attached to an apartment probably owned by Columbia housing, identified by an awning and a sandwich board, through a tiny unassuming door, is my UPS store of choice. It may seem unspectacular - it's just a UPS store! and it probably is. But I appreciate a staff with a good sense of humor and an easy demeanor. It appears to be run by students who know that if you need to tape up a box you have to buy the roll of tape, but who'll also concede that the ridiculous scotch tape job you've already done is sufficient and, "you don't wanna spend money, do you?" If there was a way to give this store a negative star rating I would do so. I purchased very fragile handmade ceramic bowls from Ecuador, and had this store ship them to me in Los Angeles from New York. They were instructed to ship them with utmost attention to their fragile nature. The man who shipped them for me was ASSURED that they would be safely packaged and taken care of. When I received the box, 9 of 12 bowls were broken, due to the absolute idiotic negligence of the employee. Not only did they stack them one on top of the other, they put ABSOLUTELY NO protection below or above them. Mind-blowing and so completely unprofessional, and heartbreaking. After having documented the damage with extensive photos pointing out how completely untrained and uncaring the employee was, I was met with a corporate response, of "gee, I'm sorry...we have reprimanded the employee, and will re-imburse you for your shipping, and the small amount of insurance you had on the package." Insurance is for, if by chance, you drop a package out of the plane, not for gross negligence of an employee. I would absolutely stay clear of this location. They SUCK on every level. read more

The staff here is CONSISTENTLY friendly, efficient, and professional and they offer a wiiide array of services (from sending packages, to photos, to faxes, to mailboxes). I've been visiting this location for the past three years and have never had to wait more than 10 seconds before someone greets me and/or helps me. Usually, it seems like they see me walking toward the front door from the outside and are waiting for me. This location makes me wish I could use UPS more. read more

I came in on April 17 to ship a 2 lb package to California. I showed the associate at the time, Matthew, the address which was on my phone. The text message showed the correct street address- 939. He said they would attempt to make 3 deliveries for the package and that the estimated delivery was April 21st. I checked on April 21st to see if the package had been delivered but it said there was a typo- the associate had typed 393. I called the store immediately . They gave me the number for corporate. I called corporate on April 22nd and April 25th, correcting the address -- 939. They assured me the package would be delivered by April 25th/26th. On April 25, I saw the package was being returned to NYC- without my consent or authorization. I spoke to and met with another associate, Vikash who told me they could not issue a refund. Vikash also denied the typo. I showed him the original text message from April 17th and he said oh, we wrote it correctly. I pointed to the package and print out with the address, 393. He remained silent. He did not apologize profusely or express any type of sympathy for the repeated mistakes that had been occurring at every level of the UPS organization. I have spoken to dispatchers in California, the corporate offices, billing offices- many of whom admit I have been wronged. Yet, they say because it is a franchise, only the store can issue the refund or resolve the situation. Through yelp's private messaging, the store owner, Brad K, politely told me that since I 'signed' while making the original purchase, the store is unwilling to issue a refund. read more

I can't even describe how wonderful this store and their employees are. As a student, not only are they convenient to school, but they make it worth even the short trip. FedEx may be a tiny bit closer, but it's not even remotely comparable in terms of service. The staff are phenomenal, ALWAYS friendly and helpful when I don't know how to ship something. They never act like I'm wasting their time and often chat with me while printing out labels. I actually look forward to coming here when I have to ship something. The process is fast and easy and the prices are good. I've never had a single thing to complain about and I come to them pretty often. read more

I don't ask anyone to greet me all the time, but this store's customer service was absolutely the pits. While I was looking for a box and asked the rep for one, he brusquely told me I had to buy one and with a nasty attitude told me to wait on line. After waiting on line, the other rep helped me, and she also took care of me without any desire to work. However, when the reps were speaking to one another, they did so with so much enthusiasm. If you want just UPS service, by all means visit this place but do not get offended by their cold, brusque "I-really-don't-want-to-work-here" attitude. read more

Avoid at all costs if you want any kind of shipping expertise. My experience: A few weeks ago I went to the store to ask how I could go about mailing a 12oz box of chocolate to a friend in Mexico. The person behind the counter, whose name I know but will withhold, told he me he could take care of it for me. So he printed out the labels, the custom form, marked the package as "candy", and even put the box in the package. Great service, I thought, even if clerk had to print the label twice since the address was incorrect the first time around. The first problem emerged with the tracking. Since the label was printed twice, the tracking # on my receipt was incorrect. They never gave me a new receipt. Thankfully I took a picture of the second label, so I had the correct number stored on my phone. The second problem was the delivery: it got stalled in Texas and then marked "return to sender". I went to the store to inquire and they had no info, and were quick to say they were not liable if it was my fault. Odd, I thought, but let's wait for the package to come back. They assured me that since it was delivered from their store, the package would return there. Weeks go by before the package makes it way back to NY, and it was shipped to my home, not the store. In the process I find that you can NOT ship candy to Mexico. I learned this via other channels, not UPS. I found it rather disappointing that even though the UPS store had marked the package as candy in the system, neither the staff nor the computer knew that this was a prohibited item. What exactly are they there to do? Is it just a glorified mailbox? They took $50 to ship a package and that was it. On the third trip back to let them know what happened, the staff said I needed to speak to the manager iif I wanted to ask for a refund, but that it was unlikely I'd get one. The manager wasn't there so they gave me his card. I remember that it was the manager, in my second trip to the store, who told me that if I was liable he would not give me a refund. I am not going back a 4th time, but I am also never going back to this store. What a waste of time and money. Next time, I'll go to a store with real knowledge about mail services. read more

These people are very arrogant and rude. My friend was going out of town for 2 weeks and I suggested to use the doorman services of the UPS store. They told him that anybody can pick up the package as long as he or she has some proof of I.D. He left me with his picture ID the tracking number and I had my own Identification as well. When I went to pick up the package they said that only him can pick it up. My friend was out of town for weeks and there were some perishables in that package. He called and asked to return it to the post office so that I can pick up there with no problems. They held on to it for days damaged it before returning to the postman. Months ago: I was packing up my box contents and clerk tried to take my things from me saying he would pack them for me. I said no thanks, I preferred to do it myself. He said rudely that I had to leave because I was not allowed to pack my own box on the premises. (Say what ?!) So I left. These guys are always super helpful! I've gone in here multiple times to drop off packages, and they were extremely busy. But as soon as I walk in, they notice it's just a drop off, and save me the trouble of waiting in line. They've been kind enough to give me quotes when I didn't even end up using their services.
