As always the Upfront Theater delivered the laughs and transcended me into the story they were portraying. The new location is definitely smaller, but was almost better because it feels like you are almost part of the performance. They even offered an extra show that is completely done in the dark after the main show. Pretty cool.

Voted "Best Date Night" by Whatcom Talk, this live improv theater will get you, your date and your wallet smiling. Tickets can be bought for around $8-30 online based on who is gracing the stage. For a few bucks more, you can arrive early at the box office and buy your tickets at the door...assuming they haven't sold out!. Weekend events or shows with special guests like stand-up comedian Ryan Stiles from Whose Line is it Anyway will cost a bit more and sell out quickly. You'll want to arrive early and queue to ensure you get inside for a good seat. First stop inside is the register for buying or picking up tickets. Cash, Mastercard and Visa are accepted. Second stop is the concessions. Food options are limited to candy bars and packaged chips. You can also buy bottled beer, wine, and soda. Third stop is showing your ticket/reciept and getting your hand stamped for re-entry in case you need to leave the main room. This is your opportunity to find a table near the stage that seats your party. The chairs are movable, so you can cram 5 around a table if needed. There is no table service during the show, but there is usually an intermission so you can load up on snacks, refresh your drink or head to the bathroom to refresh your look. But hey, no one is going to see you anyway. The lights are dimmed low and little electronic candles found on each table emit just enough light for you to see where you placed your drink on the table not enough to see the imperfections in your looks. The shows often involve some audience participation, but nothing too earth shattering. For instance, during the Hellingham mystery thriller show, you get to vote "who dunnit". Other shows, actors will sometimes ask audience members for improv ideas to be written on papers and pulled during the show to add fun dynamics. If you want to give improv a try, you can enroll in the improv classes offered by the theater to hone your craft. If you are good enough, you just might be selected to join the cast some day. There is street parking and a small private lot next to the venue. The bridge construction in front of the theater is finally complete, so you can easily circle the block if needed to find that coveted spot.

Stand-up comedy first Thurs. monthly. $5 and students $3 (with student ID)

If laughter is the best medicine than The Upfront is your prescription for funny! I have never had less than a 5-star experience over several years. My first visit was Hellingham followed by themed shows, GBU and being surprised by Ryan Stiles popping in unannounced...fun, fun, fun at The Upfront!! The tables and candlelight have the feel of a small club Los Angeles style. My niece was in town from Phoenix over Thanksgiving weekend (also her birthday) and we included a show as part of our celebration. She chose a table right next to the stage. I hid under the table from the host, she bravely went on stage to participate in one of the sketches. We also were chosen to be judges and hold score cards for the performers during their Backyard Brawl show. Audience participates throughout and does make for a unique night out. Voted best date night in Bellingham Alive. Come early for best seating and to support your local theatre. Stand-up comedy first Thurs. monthly, new talent welcome $5.00 general admission/ Students $3.00 W/ ID -Private parties & fundraisers -Improv classes for individuals and businesses -Special New Year's Eve show w/ Champagne toast -Snacks/beer/wine served

The cider was a bit watered down even if they didn't actually add water to it, it just lacked a bit of flavor. However, we did get the chance to sample a few beers and the server was patient about it. Good pairing with the burgers from the food truck El Pollo Feo and it looks like some people bring food from the food trucks here to enjoy with the beer. There is ample seating though it can get busy at times. Self-serve water station available.

I had the pleasure of visiting Kulshan on their very first night of operation, which was a longggg time ago. At that time, the only other two major breweries in town had full kitchens and great menus, and Kulshan planned to only feature food trucks. I thought this was a horrible idea! Especially considering, at the time, there weren't all that many food trucks around. Well, I was wrong. Kulshan concentrated on making good beer, and serving it up with a friendly smile in their warm, inviting little space. Food trucks have come and gone over the years, but the beer has remained consistently amazing, the staff welcoming, and the space is almost exactly the same (with a couple of minor mods, including removing the dart board many moons ago). They've also since opened a second, larger location, adding "K2" and the Trackside Beer Garden to a list of what is now many, MANY breweries in the city. This is definitely a must-visit on any Bellingham beer pilgrimage. Thanks, Kulshan, for all those good beers over the years!

Last night I discovered my new, favorite beer garden. You know it's a hidden gem when you have to…read moreuse your GPS to guide you through quiet neighborhood streets to find it. Not only is it tucked away from the noise of the busy street, but it's set in a lush Japanese garden with stone pogodas and a red, wooden bridge over a small pond of water. Add beer, fingerpainting and Yelpers to the mix, and you've got an ideal retreat to wind down after a hectic day. We sat on picnic benches and painted to our heart's content. Heidi, the owner of the mobile Fingerpainting company instructed us on how to make our masterpieces. Spritz your paper with water and spread it across the page. Add acrylic paints to your page by spraying, squirting, plopping, pressing and spreading from the small, bright containers provided. Some chose to spin their paper around to let the colors drip and form their own patterns. Others rolled up their sleeves and litterally got their hands dirty. Heidi gave us aprons and gloves so we wouldn't ruin our clothes. We could set our works of art onto a tablecloth on the ground to dry and then plop them onto a cardboad platform in order to transport them home without messing up our vehicles. Yelp Community Ambassador Jennifer J. did a fine job of organizing this creative endeavor. Thanks for the sausage and cheese appetizer and the free drink ticket. Oh, and the Yelp sunglasses were a hit too, especially since the sun didn't set until 8:30 PM. What a fantastic way to enjoy a summer evening in the Pacific Northwest. I didn't want to leave, so I stayed and ordered Pineapple Cider and a Mason Jar cheesecake from the outside bar (a converted CONEX container). I would love to come back with friends for a game night. There was a mini putt putt golf course and cornhole outside. The converted house provides shelter from the elements and would make a nice retreat during the winter months. Indoors, you'll find a foosball table, darts and several dozen board games. There's a pokestop here too. Not like you need another "lure" to convince you to come. Did I mention that this is my new favorite hideaway? Check it out, I'm certain it will make your list too.

However, I pride myself on the fact that my opinions are not cast in stone, and I ended up surprised at how much fun I had! Heidi, the owner of Fingerpainting for Grownups, was incredibly gracious and put me at ease immediately when she said it's impossible to mess up. I tried my best to prove her wrong, but ended up with a pair of unique creations that I was proud to bring home. Even if you're like me, and a bit skeptical of your artistic abilities, I would urge you to swing out and try a fingerpainting event with your friends. And for our event, the beautiful outdoor gardens at Hops 'n Headz were the perfect location for all the fun.
