If you've ever had the pleasure of watching a movie at a drive-in, then you already know that…read morethere's no other moviegoing experience quite like it. Drive-in theaters have been experiencing a resurgence in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic as they allow movie-goers to maintain social distance from others while still having a night out. If you're looking to visit a drive-in. This also holds true for Austinites. The newest drive-in location brought to Austinies by Blue Starlight Central sits on a lot behind the VFW. Locations such as this one will most certainly renew the drive-in outdoor experience. Last night, the Things and a companion and I watched "Imaginary" (the latest flix brought to viewers from Blumhouse). Those interested in attending a movie here must purchase their tickets on-line in advance of the showing. When arriving at the drive-in, movie goers must show their confirmation of payment for the movie either via electronic receipt on a cell phone or printed copy of payment. After showing proof of payment, mover goers are given instructions on what radio station to tune into to hear the movie (long gone are the days of speakers that are able to be affixed to vehicles once parked). I purchased four tickets and a car slot pack for 4. Packs include two canned sodas of choice, two candies of choice and two warm bags of freshly popped popcorn. This location unlike the other Blue Starlight Central does not serve alcoholic beverages. As noted previously, this location sits behind VFW but is also adjacent to an apartment complex. With this being said, the lights from the apartment complex put somewhat of a haze on the second screen, making it somewhat difficult to see scenes that are in low to dim light. Because this location is newish, there were very few movie goers last night for the screen we watched. In fact, we were only in one of three vehicles watching our screen. This was nice as we were able to sit in our truck bed with blankets and a radio tuned to the drive-in station and were also able to put out our lawn chairs next to the truck and not be next to any other cars/vehicles. This location's decor certainly does give a vintage 1950s vibe. As it relates to this vintage appeal, it should be noted that this is not the fanciest drive-in but does make up for lack of the newest this or that by conjuring up nostalgic memories of days gone by. Total for 4 and slot packs $71.50

The staff was pretty cool and accommodating with rescheduling. My favorite part was when the movie screen keeping fading on and off. - they should fix that.

Overall: 3.5/5 [dine in]…read more This theater is in a great location and is always clean. They also validate parking at the McBee garage which is a nice perk. The seats are a bit older than the Lakeline location and don't seem to recline as much, but the drinks come out faster here. They also have a nice upstairs outdoor patio to hang out on. We got the boneless wings with fries ($18.25). The fries were alright but the wings were not good, the taste and flavor just weren't for me. The portion was also pretty small for the price.

Needless to say a lot has changed since our last review of this Alamo location from 2017! Even though we hadn't written updated reviews, we nonetheless noticed (of course) that Alamo had consistently gotten worse over the years. However, our experience last week has confirmed that we will never ever be back here again. This place is the pits. The only reason we went is because someone got us a gift card. We bought our tickets, and there was a $7 "convenience fee" like we are in 1998. But then, we get to the theatre, and--JOKE'S ON US because we had no idea that this had happened--you do everything through a QR now. Are you kidding??? How much soul can you suction out of a business!?! The whole point of this whole enterprise was to use the fun little pencils, write your order down, and have the charming experience of HUMAN INTERACTION. Now, you have your phone out--yes, haha that they mention the irony after the bazillion ads we had to sit through!--and there is an automatic 18% tip included. Wowza! We were so disgusted that we only ordered beers. Our daughter had to get TWO kids pizzas because the portions were so small. The menu is way more limited and even more overpriced than one could imagine. Hope you liked Toy Story 5! Oh, AND FYI, if you forget to close out your tab, they add a 5% ADDITIONAL tip within 20 minutes of the movie closing. I mean, this place truly, truly hates its customers. And what greets you at the main desk? A Gen Z'er on her phone the entire time who can't be bothered to look up when folks come and go. We hate this place so much and we are SO excited for the day that we hear that they will have to shutter their doors because, honestly, no business deserves to go under more than this one. 1 star only because we can't give zero.

Kudos to Alamo for being the pioneer in offering food and drink while watching movies. While they…read morestarted with pencil and paper ordering, they have now upgraded to scanning a QR code to order online through the menu. Very .easy and convenient! Not only do they have good food and "bottomless" popcorn bowls, they also sponsor fun preview events to their special Victory fan club members, of which I am one. Last night they previewed the movie "Power Ballad," an excellent film starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas. Often they have special guests to introduce the movie and offer fun contests. At the Power Ballad preview, they awarded a guitar to the first person to jump up and name the director (John Carney). I didn't win. The theater is definitely geared to film buffs and not the normal blockbuster movie goer, with posters from current and classic films decorating the walls. They even have the scary twins from "The Shining" in one of the hallways. You won't see that at any multiplex movie theater!

My relationship with Alamo has been long, like I've gone since Spike and Mike's used to do sick and twisted festival of animation events. It's my go to. It's my don't-go-to-other-theaters-out-of-loyalty spot. The last few times have been beyond subpar. I didn't want to believe it was over. Tonight, I went for Spiderman at 11:30 PM. I've been promising this to my husband as a date night. It was the one and only time we had a sitter (we have a 6 week old child and a 1.5 year old - so it's been a while since date night). Husband is service industry, and it was literally the only time we had a sitter after he was off of work. We ubered to Alamo, which cost about $13. We paid for the sitter. We get to Alamo and they're closed. We get shit happens, but let Victory members know in advance. Even a 30 minute heads up would have saved us an uber ride or allowed us time to find tickets elsewhere or have a date alternative. Nothing. The staff were apologetic, but didn't seem all that concerned about it. They told me I'd get a refund, that's it. No vouchers to another show. No voucher for food/drinks. The vouchers were sitting in front of the cashier and would have made a world of difference, but she acted indifferent and never offered them. Just a "yeah sorry, you'll get a refund in 3-5 business days". What about the refund for the time, ubers to/from, and sitter? That's where vouchers could have somewhat saved the day. It wasn't important to staff or Alamo because it wasn't their time, ubers, babysitters, or incredibly needed date night. I wasn't even a Karen about it. I tried to tell her I'm sorry she had to deal with issues at the theater and that it probably sucked for staff as much as it does customers, so I get it. Not her fault. She just acted very WHATEVER. RIP Alamo. We will not be back. This could have been fixed, but it wasn't and there was no real effort. They have my email from my Victory account, so why no heads up so we could try to catch the film elsewhere? Why no extra effort to give vouchers? Hell, if we got to the counter and were told the card on file was refunded, that tiny effort would have been something. Alamo was built for people who LOVE cinema. It had a loyal following, but everything that we loved about it is dead and gone. It's sad seeing the current "Alamo" corpse be paraded like Weekend at Bernie's. So instead, we will stream at home once it's available. We will partake in what's killing cinema because Alamo just killed it for us. Thanks but no thanks.
