Passing through on our way back home and decided to take a little detour to support both my caffeine problem and a local business. Always a great idea in my book! They have a drive through, but considering that it was my first time here, I wanted to get a better idea of the options/menu, so we went in. It gives off old school diner eclectic vibes, which is cool with me. The staff was friendly and greeted us after finishing up the drink they were making. We took some time to check out the menu & landed on an iced Turtle - one of those listed under "specialty drinks," which was caramel, dark chocolate, and butter pecan. I was a little nervous when I got it because of the amount of syrup in the bottom, so I gave it a good stir. Flavor was a little strong, mostly from the dark chocolate (which I'm not the biggest dark chocolate fan to begin with), but after a good mix, all blended pretty well. I enjoyed the flavor and would certainly drink it again, but would like to try another option to explore more of the menu. Definitely worth a visit if you're passing through the area. read more

First visit to the Ugly Mug. I ordered the special drink called the Lucky Charms Latte. Coffee not your thing? They also have loose leaf tea jars that you can bring up and they will make a cup of tea for you. They have pastries, hand made crafts and other small items for sale. Staff were quick and friendly. This is the cutest coffee shop! My daughter loves the Caramel Cooler and my friend got a hot hazelnut frappe. They also have fruit smoothies you can add Greek yogurt to. We also got some ham and cheese croissants which were great, cappuccino muffins and apple fritters. Everything was delicious. Everyone who works there is so kind and helpful. Coming home from Hendersonville, me and my S/O wanted dessert after lunch but nothing big - coffee ! We read online this place offers boba, but currently it's only fruit flavored popping boba. Instead, I ordered one of the cafes speciality drinks - a Clockwork Orange. My chocolatey drink is very sweet, but perfect for a dessert ! My S/O says the taro thick and refreshing. Had to find a place for work since my hip coworking office decided to take Post Thanksgiving off. Came here because they had a "Print, Copy, Fax" sign on their window that screamed for vagabond office workers like myself. The Ugly Mug gave me a place of warmth and food during my lack of office crisis. The vibe kinda resembles a 1880 Chinese Opium den splitting up the booths with translucent scarlet curtains and paper lanterns radiating a comfort vibe. Each booth has a 6 prong outlet for a whole gamer set up (not that I would even think about doing that for work cough cough). Very friendly staff and over 50 varieties of tea makes this place a one of a kind experience, at least as far as coffee shops go. Ended up spending over $20 here, which is more that I should have spent, their cinnamon rolls were just so good. Lunch is not their greatest strength. They have more sweets and baked goods for food. Had to sustain a sugar rush for lunch while here. This is now on the go to list for working, tea snobbery, and hopefully a D&D group. Still looking for that. read more

It's a catchy name, but there's nothing "ugly" about it. This is one of those coffee shops where you walk in and say, "Man, they don't make 'em like this anymore." Ugly indeed, for sure the "Mug",sorry for the bad review, it surly was not the service the lady that helped me was in fact really nice but my coffee and the scone I had not so much . Because of the really good reviews I thought I could just stop in Hendersonville for coffee instead of Asheville big mistake. First of all the coffee is not handcrafted at all everything comes out of a machine like in a gas station? Not very warm either no nice foam. Thee scone didn't look appetizing but I was hungry and in a " don't judge the book by the cover" mood but should have , they had three kind they all looked identical and my apple - cinnamon was tasteless and pretty stale. Now to the " Mug" aka the to go cup , styrofoam???? I mean for real guys? This stuff NEVER gets out of a landfill , makes me mad ! So you make a few cent more and ruin the environment?Also why no raw sugar in a jar? It's so easy. I m not going to come back there are plenty of places downtown that do a better job. read more

Came in 15mins after closing...oops only to be greeted by grandma and granddaughter still offered to fulfill our latte cravings..and couldn't help pick up a pecan bar and raspberry scone. The Ugly Mug has been a good coffee shop and has a strong local patronage, but as often happens, the baristas seem to miss mark. It used to be, with the previous staff, one could order any drink on the menu and it would be served precisely as ordered. The last few times we've visited the drinks weren't made to order. One example: I ordered a cappuccino and was served a latte with too much milk. Another example: the order was a bulldog (espresso, caramel and froth). Again there was too much milk and little caramel flavor. The cool thing about the bulldog was they used real caramel; not artificial caramel flavoring or sauce. And, a third example is the drinks were served in styrofoam to go cups with plastic lids. We had asked for our drinks in mugs as we wanted to sit and enjoy them. Plus, in previous years they had music (coffee house genre) playing or a live local musician. That's gone. It's sad to see the decline of old favorite. I may try again, but there are more options very close. read more

Over a decade later, I never visit home without a trip to the Ugly Mug, often several trips. The coffee is top notch (and I drink a lot of coffee); I currently live in NYC and honestly prefer the coffee at Ugly Mug to anywhere I've found in the Big Apple. The owners are extremely friendly and kind, and encourage customers to bring in laptops and make themselves at home while enjoying their coffee. I've only been here one time the experience was a little different. coffee was good just some confusion with what we was ordering not sure if it was me or the staff but we got it straightened out quickly. So at the end it was a very Nice place to sit and drink coffee had a very comfortable sofa to sit on. I will definitely give them another try.
