This place is fantastic. The server/bartender, Sunnye, was incredibly knowledgeable and gracious. The spaghetti and meatballs (homemade spaghetti!!) were impeccable and the wine was delicious. 10/10 was not expecting to stumble upon this place while here for work in Brownwood. Not sure how I didn't review this place. I've been here a few times and each time there's something new on the menu I try. I will say that the wait time is pretty long when you place your order, but supposedly the dishes are made from scratch. I've only been here for dinner, so I can't speak to their lunch menu. The servers are great and the gelato is good. I'm not sure if I care enough for the drinks. The drinks compared to what I was expecting and the price isn't worth it in my opinion. But treat yourself to it if you go for the first time. The food is pricey, so keep that in mind if you decide to stop by. Also, their gelato is great. I've eating out regularly in nice restaurants in the DFW area for several months now, but I have to say I love Coming back to the Turtle when I get back in town! Went by for an early lunch as they unlocked the doors after a holiday weekend. They whipped up a crab cake dish on a creamy corn chowder base that wasn't on the menu that I had my wife literally praising with each bite! Since this was breakfast for me (fasting for my blood draw at the doctor's) I had their quiche and a latte. Excellent as always! Thanks for the high standards! read more

After many years of looking forward to visiting The Turtle, we finally had the opportunity. Unfortunately, our hopeful anticipation was negated by our experience during this visit to Brownwood. The manager, Mary, was less than friendly. She walked around the restaurant and bar with a sour look on her face and seem to be inconvenienced because we had a large party. From the time we entered the door until exiting the restaurant, her behavior exhibited a lack of interest. The bartender, Mary J., did a fantastic job of taking care of us. We had a party of 13 which sat in the bar area. Let me interject, this is not where we wanted to sit, it is where the manager moved us so that, " she (the bartender) could serve us easier." We were grateful after spending two hours in the bar that we were there, because it was the coolest room in the whole place. The bartender was very efficient in getting drinks and taking food orders. I am certain it would've been nice if the manager, instead of walking around in circles, had helped. The food we had was delicious once we received the correct order. However, many of the dishes upon delivery were cold. One hamburger had a hair in it. This was brought to the managers attention, but she was not interested in speaking with us regarding the temperature of our food. Moreover, she wasn't interested in speaking with any of us regarding anything. The cocktails from the bar were amazing. It was nice to be at an establishment which had a bartender who actually knew what she was doing. Mary J. was a very efficient and charming server. She did a great job of getting drinks and food out as promptly as possible. If the manager had chipped in, I'm certain that the food would have made it to the table warm. Suggestions if you're going to the turtle: 1. Make sure your party is small 2. Let the bartender be creative 3. Don't expect much from management 4. Do order the pizza or burgers, and be sure to get some tornado fries 5. Tip your bartender well, she is working her ass off The 3 star rating that I am giving this place is an average between the 5 stars I give the bartender/server, Mary J, and the 1 star I give Mary, the manager. I was appalled that the manager did not offer a bit of compensation for cold food, hairy food, and wrong order. Mary, Rest assured that our large party of 13, and the $450+ that we spent will not inconvenience you in the future. You can also be sure that everyone we know and the thousands reading this review will question darkening the door of your establishment. I hope you realize how lucky you are to have a great bartender like Mary J. working for you. I also hope she is well compensated, because she is a jewel. First timer. Ordered a burger and 18 dollars worth of chocolates to go back in October. Enjoyed the burger but forgot the chocolates at the restaurant. Called from out of town and they credited my card without any greef. I need to go back to try the chocolates and see what else is on the menu. read more

Its our Brownwood "go to" for great food and wine! How fortunate this small town is to have this gem. The only thing I'd add to this place is to warm up the restaurant without overdoing it. Maybe, white tablecloths and small candle lamps someday soon!? read more

The gelato here is superb and the chocolates are beautiful and delicious, worth the higher price for the quality. just be careful when you are selecting chocolates for children because some of them have alcohol in them and they aren't always very clearly marked. it's a tiny space but very quaint to sit at one of the iron tables and enjoy your treat. My favorite was the chocolate. Sometimes the service is a tad slow because they are trying to run the restaurant that is attached, but it isn't bad overall. I definitely recommend anyone staying in the Brownwood area to make a stop here. read more

Mary Stanley, owner of The Turtle, is a true culinary artist. We have eaten at fine restaurants all over the world and have never had better meals than those exquisitely prepared and served at The Turtle the past two nights. Yes, you read that right, we returned tonight because the food was so outstanding last night. I can't say enough about the creative menu, food preparation, atmosphere and presentation. The bar tender is excellent; a true mixologist. We were in town for a funeral, and just happen to dine at The Turtle. What a find! I promise you won't be sorry if you dine there! read more
