This is a great spot to quickly pick up lunch, or stay awhile and dine at one of their many tables…read more There is a lot of space here and even when there are other customers. It doesn't feel crowded. I've been to El Viejo Fred twice and both times did not disappoint. The first time I accompanied my Dominican friend who ordered for me. The second time I was on my own, but the ladies were very helpful and we made it happen. Most of the food is behind the counter in a covered buffet-style setup. You let them know what you are interested in, beef, chicken etc, and they'll show you the offerings. You can't beat their lunch special at around $12-15. You get a giant portion of rice & meat, add on a bit of salad and you're good to go! The food is so delicious, the flavors are all there. I also had the chicken and cheese empanadas as well as beef and both tasted great, I liked the beef best it was very well seasoned. Another bonus? Tamarind juice!! Not many places have it so I'm always ecstatic when I see it on a menu. Both my friend and I really enjoyed the food we purchased from El Viejo Fred, and the friendly service we received, we will definitely be back!

I came here for takeout a few times recently. There are buffet style trays arranged and you choose…read morethe protein and rice that you want, so it's very quick. There are also some sides available. I always got oxtail. It's good, but a bit pricey for the amount of meat you get. Others have ordered the pepper steak before and the portions for that are great. The rice is definitely on the salty side, but is good overall. I do appreciate that the lady working there is always generous with pouring extra sauce on our rice as well. We also tried the tres leches during our last visit and would get it again. It had the perfect texture and sweetness.

I ordered from one of the many food delivery services so I do not know how it is inside. Although…read morethe outside looks small in pictures and the restaurant located on 36. I had the bistec encebollado which was excellent with arroz con gandules. The arroz con gandules were also delicious and the bistec encebollado sauce integrated with the rice to make a flavor explosion. The yuca was good although I have never been a big fan of the yuca mojo. The order of tostones was like an entire plantain which was awesome. Although the plate didn't look to appealing because it was all topped on top of each other and moved around during transit, it still tasted phenomenal overall! However, donde esta el mofongo? Either way I will be eating from this establishment again and excited to try their habichuelas!

From the moment you walk in, the staff makes you feel genuinely welcome, like you're a regular even on your first visit. The food is absolutely outstanding fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. And I have to talk about that green sauce they serve on the side... whatever magic is in it, I could seriously put it on everything. It's that good. To top it all off, I tried their tres leches cake and it was perfection, moist, rich, and not overly sweet, just the way it should be. Amazing food, wonderful people, and flavors that keep you thinking about your next visit. Highly recommend!

It looked great. But, it was way way overrated, like the cook is in love and doesn't pay attention…read more while salting the food. Kid said it was saltier than the ocean. Also we went at night and the food was dry-ish, plantains were not fresh and yammy as u love them. Oxtail was dryyyy. Yukka (for extra $2) was dryyy. From the meat options we got the best was chicken, chicken in my (super salty) soup was perfectly cooked. Grilled chicken was great too, juicy with crunchy skin. Beans were cooked perfectly. Too much rice in every plate and not enough beans though. I really do t know if during lunch time all that food was freshly cooked and juicy and just got dried up by dinner time. I might give it another chance if I am in the area and super hungry, cos it was generously served.
