Cute train store with a play area in the back for little kids. My daughter favorite thing are the train and coal mine rides. The sell the tickets for $2 each ride. In the kids area they also have miniature trains that move with 1 token. And a little Carrousel, horse wagon ride and old car ride that use 2 tokens. The tokens are 4 for a $1. These guys are awesome. I ordered a track set out of state and had some issues with shipping. These guys pulled through and went above and beyond with my problem. Always request shipping insurance. They literally hounded the local postmaster to find my package that got sent half way across the country, the wrong way. read more

Actually, I only went in to buy a train ride ticket. Was impressed by the train layout display and judging by the number of customers, this is a popular store. Purchased our ticket which was only $4.00 for myself, and 2-year-old grandson rode for free. It was really fun! The train takes passengers all around Gardner Village. This time of year, there are friendly witch displays everywhere so while riding the train we were able to see several we had missed while walking around. read more

Entering The Train Shoppe makes you wonder why they need such a large building. Their store is actually a good sized space for model railroad sales, and they have a great assortment of products. Each aisle is sorted by scale, and neatly organized. However, the back of the store with its unassuming sign saying "To Trains" is the real treat. Rounding this corner and stepping into a toy Train wonderland, you immediately realize why the big building. The interactive area features 6 train layouts varying from Big G Scale and the way down to a sprawling N layout. They are token operated, and for the equivalent of a quarter kids and kids at heart can run the train of their choice for 2 minutes. They can turn on and off the headlamp, blow the whistle, and adjust the speed. Each layout features two or three coin operated trains. There is also a large ride on train. For $2.50 a head you and the kids can ride through an indoor gulch with animatronic animals and video elements. The whole thing was decked out for Christmas, with some additional elves and Christmas trees added to the mix. The Train Shoppe also features some coin op rides(tiny carousel, bouncy car etc.) which my nephew found to be great fun. There are rooms for birthday parties and meetings. I have been taking my son here since 2013. The people who work here are ALWAYS helpful and respectful, whether they are speaking to me or my little dude. They also offer a loyalty program card that you can use for discounts on bigger items. They of course have everything you need for your hobby train set up, from the actual trains and tracks to trees and even novelty items. They do repairs as well and the staff is super knowledgeable. Another thing I enjoy is that not only do they have the higher end locomotives that we may only get once or twice a year, but they also carry some older used trains and cars that are not as expensive. The back area is flipping magical. I hope they get the kiddie train back up and running after Covid. They have several different themed rooms for birthdays in the back that are set up super cool. The best part about the back area is the amount of work they put into the tons of scenes they have set up for their trains to run on. Amazingly detailed mountains, rivers, towns, Hogwarts-sometimes it changes but its always enchanting no matter how old you are. We love this place and will always go here before we purchase anything online. read more

I loved this store, simple yes, but if you need help starting or building your train collection, Cliff is your man! They have everything available at their main store as far as purchase goes, not as extravagant as the main store, but you can't expect that from a small mall store front. The best place to take your toddlers and young kids to get their train fix. Our two year old twins had the best time here. And for only $6 in tokens I felt it was a pretty good value. We were with a group so we had three moms who contributed tokens, and between us we had almost two hours of fun there before running out of tokens. A couple notes: Some of the token machines were faulty, all in all I had about $1.25 eaten by the machines. One was not functioning but was not marked as out of order, it was the first one when you walk in so naturally we immediately put two tokens in it and poof, they were gone. There were no attendants in there to offer assistance, and I didn't ask the guys out front for my money back - maybe they would have refunded me, who knows. Quite a few of the model trains were out of service, about six of them. There was still plenty to keep our young kids happy. Also the train the kids can ride was not in service the Thursday we were there. Apparently it only runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday? I would call ahead if you're hoping to let kids ride the train and see if it's running that day. Looks like the shop out front was super well-stocked for the model train enthusiast. I bought a wooden Thomas railway car, it was about $1.50 more than the same product on Amazon but for the convenience I just picked it up while there. Even with the small annoyances it was still a really fun outing for the kids. read more

Not much in stock, prices are not competitive with the online sellers like Lombard or TrainLife but they had a few items to take home. Service was sub par but they have a cool area in the back for children to run trains, pretty interactive. The layouts in the back of the store are well detailed and pretty nice. From what the proprietor says they are the only model train store in the valley, and they act like it. But really it seems like a good place to bring children to enjoy the hobby or have parties. read more

A hidden gem in Salt Lake City. We went during Christmas time and they had it all decked out for the season. You can have parties there and ride the mini train or drive the elaborate train sets that they've set up and designed. Can't wait to go back. read more

I can't say anything about the "shoppe" part of the Train Shoppe as I've never bought anything there but the back room is awesome! They have a small train that kids and parents can ride on (only running on Fridays and Saturdays apparently). They also have about 15 model trains and villages and stuff set up that you can operate by putting a quarter in the corresponding slot. It's really fun to change the speed and blow the whistles of the trains. My two-year-old loves it and I'm sure older kids would too. If you're looking for a fun, inexpensive thing to do with your kids for an hour or two, check the Train Shoppe out! I imagine this is a great place for a birthday party but I have no experience with that either. They have two party rooms in the back. My only complaint is about the lighting in the back room. They seriously need to brighten it up a bit. read more

My son loves trains so we happened upon this place. They have a train that you can ride on ($2/rider) and my two-year-old son loved it. They decorate it seasonally and really went all out for Christmas. Trees, music, snowmen. It's what you'd expect if Disneyland uprooted a ride and plopped it on State Street. They also have model trains set up where you out in a quarter and can watch it drive around. The staff was very friendly and let me pick their brain about how the trains work. This is a hidden gem. The front of the shop is a train hobby store with adult and kid train sets. The back is a small family fun area with 2 train rides and some games. My 2 and 4 year old loves the train rides. They set up the inside details of scenery so well. They also have a bunch of model train setups that allow kids to put 1 token in and control the train's speed, light, bell, and horn. My kids could have spent hours there. Ingenious. read more

When he couldn't answer a question I had, he took down my number to call me back later. This is the service I expected from the main store on state street, but they were too busy and didn't seem to care about someone who was a "newbie" to trains. So happy we decided to come here. Our 1 1/2 year old loves trains and had a fun time! We were the only ones in the back play area. but they still decided to do some loud work right next to the little kiddie area. We covered our child's ears every time the electric saw went off. I just don't understand why the could not have waited until after we left or had worked on their project before opening/after closing. The big rides are darling but most certainly over priced. We booked a birthday party here for my 1-year old. It was a great time! Most of the kids were toddler-aged. There are little rides (carousel, old car, covered wagon) where you put tokens in and they go. The kids also loved putting tokens in to watch the model trains. There's also a train that kids and adults can ride. It was decorated really cute and perfect for toddlers. We were really happy with everything. What a fantastic business to work with! I was a bit late to the game trying to track down a N scale Big Boy. I have wanted to add one to my  collection for a while now, so after a motorcycle was sold and my 5 year old had saved $100 to help buy Big Boy The Train Shoppe was able to pull through. After a few phone calls to other shops along the Wasatch front I called The Train Shoppe. They were happy to sell one of the engines they had pre-ordered, their pricing was more than fair, (a bit more generous that I expected! Thank you!!!) their customers service was excellent, and their communication was spot on. When they called to let me know that my engine had arrived they were willing to ship it to my house; as I live 70 miles north of the shop, their willingness to ship saved me an afternoon's worth of travel and a tank of gas. I saw a lot of good reviews on this place, but I was honestly very disappointed as was my grandson. There were three rides, one of which was broken. We spend $10 on token in 20 minutes. Several of the trains were working. and I thought that there would be a 'free play' area with things for toddlers and older to run off some energy. Not worth your time, at least this time it wasn't. the miniature train wasn't running, perhaps that is only weekends or for parties. read more

The back room is great for kids. Bring a handful of quarters and enjoy operating model trains using their coin operated remote controlled train sets. Waited outside the front door until 10:15am. Locked door with a lit "OPEN" sign. Such a disappointment. My 2 year old was crushed. Drove all the way from Syracuse. When the guy came to open the shop, no apologies or excuse--not even a "good morning," just a "come on in." I won't waste my time driving down again. I'm not happy the way they treat customers they smile in your face and as soon as you walk out the door they stab you in the back. I've seen this happen a lot. Randy is either working on his personal stuff or on the computer he some times looks up at you and he doesn't even talk with you. Don't get an account with these guys bad news I've heard jeff on the phone say to his customer's that not enough money. Always telling them he broke. He keeps changing his prices and the discounts are small. I've wittiness randy hang up on customers asking questions. I've heard from other customers they start fights. With other customers and spread gossip. I wouldn't recommend this shop for trains hobby stop or warens they are great places read more
