According to their website The Swan is a privately owned boutique hotel, a warm friendly 'local',…read moreand a superb restaurant serving carefully sourced seasonal food. All this at the edge of the stunning Surrey & West Sussex countryside border. The menu at The Swan is a superb array of classic dishes; choosing what I wanted was nearly impossible! After a lengthy period of deliberation I left my final decision-making moment until the waitress arrived to take our order (I needed the pressure). I opted for the beef carpaccio, rocket salad, shaved parmesan and truffle oil. The key to a dish like this is the quality of the meat. Full of intense beef flavour, and literally melt in your mouth, it was clearly from great stock. The fresh peppery rocket, salty parmesan and the rich truffle oil (of which there was the perfect amount) all complemented the meat perfectly. For my main course, I had initially decided on the calves liver but made a last-minute change to the pan seared scallops, potato roti, black pudding, pea puree and a chive beurre blanc. It was the right decision. The scallops were light, delicate and cooked to perfection. The black pudding spicy and earthy. The potato roti, crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy in the middle, and full of flavour. The chive beurre blanc also added a delicious richness to the dish. The only small criticism of the dish is that the pea puree was slightly lost amongst all the other punchy flavours, but when tasted on its own is was beautifully smooth and seasoned well. After 20 years running one of London's 'best kept secrets' - The Swag and Tails pub in Knightsbridge - the owners decided to create a cosy and luxurious pub in the beautiful Surrey Hills, and with recommendations in the Harden's and Michelin guides it seems as though they are doing something right. Fresh local ingredients, tasty classic food, in a wonderful setting. This is pub dining of the highest order.

The drink selection isn't bad at all for a small pub and the staff were lovely and friendly. The food is delicious although a little pricier than one may expect for a little pub although it was much further south than I'm accustomed too. The room we had was a good size. Nice sofa and seating area as you enter followed by a good size bedroom with a super king size bed. The bathroom was also a good size with double sink. The only downside was the shower was in the bath. But at least there was a bath. It was very clean from the sheets to the loo! It overlooked the road but was relatively quiet. There is a good size car park opposite and a secret style beer garden to the rear. The staff looked after us all weekend like regulars. If you ever in the area I would recommend a little weekend stay here.

Quick glance: + fresh, local ingredients…read more+ big portion of tasty food + friendly, caring staff + local ales from Hog's Back Brewery down the road - disappointing dessert - booking recommended We visited the Duke of Cambridge prior to watching a show at the West End Centre in Aldershot on a Saturday evening. We arrived about 6 in the evening and although the venue was only half filled, all the tables were already reserved. Luckily for us (and the restaurant too!) we needed to get out by 7pm and it so happened that there was a table free until then. It was good of the head waiter to check if we were happy to vacate by 7, as it meant we got to eat there (and they turned over an extra table.) Because of the short time we had, the food came quickly. It was good to see there was good communication between the front of staff and the kitchen to make this possible. The food was simply a delight. For starter I had the beet-root infused smoked salmon salad. It was an unusual way to smoke the salmon but the flavours were beautiful. For mains, I had their special of the day - whole plaice. While presentation was nothing special, the fish was cooked to perfection with the meat just cooked, full of flavours and juices. That alone stole my heart for the evening. The food was on the heavy side, with lots of cream in the leeks, for example, which could put some people off, but it is great for those looking for a bit of extravagance. The portion size is also generous. The letdown came after the wonderful starter and main course, as my dessert was plain and lacking in flavours. The New York cheesecake was too sweet and lacked the 'cheesy' flavour. Shame, but it shouldn't hold you back from visiting this wonderful pub served by really friendly staff, and eat your heart out along with local ales from Hog's Back Brewery down the road, or a selection of wines.

It's particularly popular with families, judging by the number of mid-size luxury SUVs in the car park - the pub certainly appears to be in the executive commuter belt. Finding an available parking space was therefore quite tricky; if there aren't any just park on the nearby approach road to Hankley Common Golf Club. They've a small bar inside which leads into a larger rustic dining room that's been tastefully refurbished. There are four real ales available, with one being locally brewed. Andwell's Red Mist was a pretty decent pint. Outside, there's a sizeable covered dining area, patio and garden, with a children's play area by the car park a decent distance away so the noise and disruption is limited. The seasonal menu is full of British classics, with the mains including beer-battered cod, chargrilled rib-eye steak and pan-roasted Gressingham duck breast. Portions were generous (see the photo of the amount of peas that came with my cod!) and everything was tasty. Summing this place up I'd say its look was in keeping with the above-average affluence of the area, but at its heart was still an old, warm and welcoming rural pub.
