We went to the Jolly Farmer on New Year's day for Sunday lunch. We contacted the owner prior to the meal to see if he could arrange for vegetarian roasts which included roast potatoes without the goose fat, vegetables, yorkshire pudding and vegetarian gravy, which you would expect for a vegetarian roast. The menu has a limited number of dishes. The owner at first said that he could not prepare roast potatoes as they had been soaked in goose fat (a whole day before!) and did not have any more potatoes. He then said that he would check with the chef and confirmed that they would be able to prepare vegetarian roasts which would include roast potatoes, etc. We arrived and were promptly seated. The waiting staff looked very nervous and were clearly untrained. It was frankly excruciating to watch. We waited for some time before our drinks order was taken. When the drinks finally arrived, two of the drinks did not contain alcohol and the child's drink contained lemonade instead of water. Having queried the drinks, we were advised that the two adult drinks did contain alcohol but they were happy to add more alcohol if required. It took three attempts to get the child's drink correct. Our meals arrived and all the meat roasts were cold. The vegetarian roasts had three roast potatoes, a small dish of layered vegetables and a pot of gravy. The gravy did not look vegetarian and there were no yorkshire puddings. When we asked whether the gravy was vegetarian we were advised that it wasn't and the pots were removed from our plates. No explanation was provided, no vegetarian gravy and no yorkshire puddings appeared. If we hadn't checked, then we would have had eaten beef gravy! Luckily none of us had any food allergies! The roast was dry and tasteless and this was the same of the roast beef versions of the meal. Whilst one appreciates that it was New Year's day and the pub was busy, it was no more busier than other Sundays when we have been there. Also, this was not our first experience of questionable 'vegetarian' meals, poor service and defensive staff. Sadly, for these reasons we (friends and I) will not be visiting this establishment again. read more

One of my favourite places for a beer or a special meal, lunchtime or evening. Lovely garden in summer with frequent outdoor barbecues and a terrace with a mature grapevine on covered pergola for shade, real fires in winter as well as stone floors for easy cleaning and guilt-free visits with soggy dog from the walk on Whitmoor Common, a local beauty spot. While I don't eat there often as it's not an every-day priced menu, when I have eaten there I've definitely had my money's worth. I had a French-style chicken casserole the other day served with home-made bread and green beans and it was lovely. Don't look for the same meal on the menu now though, as the menu changes frequently to match the available ingredients, the season and the chef's creativity. Steak sandwich also completely yummy, as are the puddings - mmm... A recent special is the Sunday Special at a tenner for a main meal including roast. Delish and excellent value. But never mind the food (a difficult comment for me to make as it is very tasty), the beer is very well kept, and the best pint of London Pride I've had for miles around. Even if you do happen to get the last pint in the barrel there's no problem with getting a fresh one if it happens to get past the eagle-eyed staff behind the bar, but they are very attentive so it's unlikely. I'm told the Seafarer's is also excellent but because the Pride is so good I haven't tried any other beers! The wine list is extensive without being pretentious, and has enough there for the broadest tastes. Very dog-friendly, but even if you don't like dogs they make sure their doggie customers are also customer friendly and don't put up with canine rowdiness, so it's fine if you're with or without your four-legged friend as you won't be pestered or mugged, and well-behaved children are also very welcome in their well-furnished garden, and in the restaurant if eating. Oh, nearly forgot to mention, free Wi-Fi, with a passcode available behind the bar. In brief, Jolly Farmer, most definitely my pub of choice. read more

My husband and I visited for a meal out last night what a disappointment. My husband ordered the chicken and bacon caesar salad which arrived with limp yellow lettuce thrown in a bowl with clearly no attempt at presentation. As he began to eat it he commented it tasted fishy when he looked further there was indeed fish in it! We informed the waitress who looked blankly at us took the bowl away without any apology. My husband particularly dislikes fish and so decided he didn't want a replacement (we assumed the waitress had gone off to get one) when we informed another waitress of this we again got no sense of an apology of explanation she just said ok and walked away. We also noticed that the table next to us who also had the caesar salad had it served in completely different bowls. I had ordered the bread and olives which for £5.95 brought me 2 slices of bread with a disproportionately large bowl of oil and 10 olives!!! We then had the steak and salmon which was mediocre but again extremely overpriced and less than the fresh ingredients it claimed to be. Also, I fail to see what the appeal of chefs thinking it looks good to serve things on oversized breadboards it's unhygienic and awkward a plate is fine! Pudding of sticky toffee was nice, but had clearly been microwaved. All in all not exactly great! Poor food, even worse service (please tell your staff to smile and perhaps a slightly smarter uniform old cardigans and jeans doesn't scream professional) and most of all extremely overpriced. Without doubt the worst dining experience I have had for many many years. We ordered the scallops to start & were served one scallop sliced into three laser thin slices, when we queried this we were rudely told it was standard portion and should be enough! The service was absolutely awful with last orders being called at 10.30 having just served us a bottle of wine, 10 minutes later we were the told to neck our wine and leave as the assistant manager has a train to catch. In summary, very average food backed up with fawlty towers style service, in fact no, not fawlty towers as there was nothing funny about the experience! DO NOT DINE HERE!! This is a really good pub with friendly staff, good decor and a great location, it's just a shame a few things stop it being a really great pub My husband and I both had the Sunday roast which overall was very good but did feel a bit over priced at £13 each, my husband then ordered the apple cake for pudding and was given what we'd describe as a paltry slice of crumble full of glacé cherries and a tiny bit of apple, he didnt eat it and we said we weren't happy with it but we weren't offered anything else or money off the bill because of it. Think we'll be trying somewhere else for a while and we hope they can improve the food in the meantime. read more

I am local and have eaten here several times. The location is perfect as it is a nice walk through the woods, with a child/dog friendly garden set in ideallic Surrey woodland. The food is a little pricey compared to the microwave/deep-fried rubbish they sell elsewhere locally, but I have yet to be disappointed. The menu vaires day to day, but the Fish and Chips and the Roasts are wonderful. This is more gastro-pub than pub grub so expect to pay a little more. The portions are very generous so overall, given location/convenience/setting/menu it is well worth a visit, especially on a summer afternoon/evening when you can eat outside. read more

Stumbled across The Jolly Farmer by chance, decided to stop and try it out. As it was a warm day we were lucky enough to be able to sit in the garden and enjoy the weather whilst having something to eat. The garden is a good place to spend a sunny afternoon and have not got a bad word to say about the food. It was beautifully presented and was delivered in a good time. Would definitely recommend trying it out and will certainly go back next time I am in the area. read more

Went to Jolly Farmer at Worplesdon yesterday (Friday 17th May) for lunch, ordered Beer Battered Cod, Chips, Crushed Peas and Tartare Sauce. When food arrived on small silly plate, no tartare sauce on the plate, Cod wasn't Cod and it certainly wasn't Beer Battered as stated on the menu. Very disappointing. Not much choice on menu for main meals. The pub is very nice, good area and gardens are lovely, but food disappointing. read more

Ordered cod and chips, chips good but cod poor quality and questionable. Subsequent 'runs' seemed to confirm this. Decor, sevice and staff good but let down by the food, portion size smallish, but you would not want much more. Will not go again for a while, used to be a regular. read more
