Tribe Tribe restaurant is the brainchild of partners Foluso Sotomi and Charlie Hughes. Boasting chefs from Nigeria and Sierra Leone, it operates as a café serving light English meals by day before switching to traditional West African fare as the evening arrives. The aim is to offer something fresh to the area, while delivering authentic meals catering to Cardiff's growing migrant population, which includes students, doctors and university lecturers. Foluso tells me of a customer who used to travel four hours to Manchester to get his culinary fix, as there were so few places getting the food just right. "Now he comes here!" Tribe Tribe opened on September 1 and offers a range of foods common across the West African region. Jollof rice is cooked in a tomato-based sauce and served with chicken, fish, meat or vegetables, while those fancying a stroll further off the beaten track can sample eba and pounded yam. These sticky but tasty carbohydrates are rolled into balls between the fingers and used to soak up bowls of soup or stew. Occasional chef's specials from other parts of the continent are also available, as are African beers.
