The name 'The No.1 African Restaurant Café & Bar' is quite a mouthful, but it's also some claim!! It's true that there aren't so many African restaurants in Cardiff, (you would think that there would be more considering the long relationship that Cardiff has had with Afro-Carribean culture), but to call yourself number one... well... I guess that's confidence for you!
I have only ever eaten here once, and have to admit to being less than adventurous. A friend of mine is keenly into African food, and goes the full nine yards, devouring everything from pigs feet to goat curry, but a lot of the more unusual dishes really don't appeal to me. So, I stuck to chicken and chips whilst she embarked on a gastronomic adventure! There's plenty of options for the less ambitious eater at The No.1 African Restaurant including kebabs, burgers, fish and chips and chicken dishes, and so it's entirely possible to stick to something you know if you don't feel in the mood for taking any risks. My friend opted for the goat meat plate, and conversation ceased the moment it arrived and didn't really spark up again until she had cleaned her plate... I guess she enjoyed it!
Christopher, the owner, is originally from the Congo, but serves a mix of different style dishes such as giraffe rice from Nigeria and Fu Fu from... I can't remember... (I was too traumatised by the idea of giraffe rice to be able to absorb any more information!) read more
