Wow what a place! Upstairs looks like a normal cafe. Then once walking downstairs its like being transported to another country! They have done such a fantastic job of the decor I'm actually very jealous, wish my house was like it! They have a cute little garden where you sit on cushions and enjoy a flavoured shisha pipe. The food was very delicious with lots of flavours, freshly cooked with loads of effort put into the presentation...the pita breads are to die for, along with some good wine! Great food, friendly staff and cosy atmosphere.... Already looking forward to my next visit!

Vegans and vegetarians of Bristol can breathe a heavy sigh of relief now that Falafel King is in town! This is fast food with a difference. Inside this brightly coloured cafe you'll find delicious pitta breads stuffed with well-sized falafel. But if you think that sounds boring, you'd be wrong. There's a variety of tastes for you to try, a whole host of salad and a choice between different types of sauces. Even if you're a meat-lover I beg you to try Falafel King as it's what all veggie restaurants should be; cheap, cheerful and tasty.

Just before getting back onto Whiteladies Road, the falafel king is in a prime position - not too far away from the main road, but also not too close to it to be a haunt for all the drunken rabble that's likely to be milling around on their way to town at a weekend. The falafel king serves up a host of falafel based foods (all vegetarian), in a calm, turkish themed environment which really gives the place a nice atmosphere. Although it's mainly take-away orientated, you can sit down and enjoy their fresh creations in an almost restaurant atmosphere. It's pretty good value - I paid about £4.50 for a really hearty falafel wrap. The only let down is there's no meat, but clearly that's not the ethos or vibe they're going for, so I'll let that one slide.

Mmm falafel...reminds me of festivals. This is a great little shop to have here. They make delicious falafel and it's a great place to get your lunch from. I honestly can't think of anywhere else you can actually get falafel from nearby (especially falafel this tasty). I was worried when this shop opened that the demand for falafel might not be so big and it might not last. I'm glad I seem to have been proved wrong. It's such a nice change from the usual sandwich/Panini/flatbread/baguette (you get the idea) shops. Usually you have to wait until you go to a festival or on holiday to get falafel this good. The manager is lovely and welcoming. They have all the right salad and garnish to go with your falafel as well, you couldn't make anything like this at home (unless you own a Falafel King). I'm a meatarian (the complete opposite of a vegetarian) and I love this place; it isn't juts for veggies at all. And I hope we get to see more diversity in the food places we see open around town.

I am not usually one for veggie food - I like my meat. However, I had lunch here for a friend's birthday and really enjoyed the food. I knew from the bright lime green exterior that the place would be modern and fresh. The interior was quite ornate, with middle-eastern style lanterns by the window, but apart from that the place was fairly basic. I'd never had falafel before, so having such a huge choice of flavours and sauces was perfect. Portions are big and the place is always buzzing, keeping in tone with the loud exterior.

The reason for his success is obvious: the food is simple, delicious and comes in either big or really big portions. I still personally rue the loss of the fulle madamas from the menu, but the might falafel (with all the sauces) provides a worthy substitute and gives you all the energy you need to run the gauntlet that is the city centre's bars and clubs. Oh, and there's plenty of chilli sauce on hand for those are seeking a healthy kebab alternative. Fast food is dead - long live the King!

Sure, they are not as mealy or spiced as one might like it but it is fresh fried to perfection every time. Plenty of salad( "those girls do know how to stuff a pitta") and as much as you want of tahini, garlic mayo, mango pickle and chilli sauce. I just wished I knew how good falafels were when drunk as a student- I would have eaten way fewer kebabs!

But do not let the neon signage and fading photos deter you. Once inside we were given a warm welcome by the head chef/waiter/proud proprietor of the establishment himself. We had a groupon deal for a three course set meal and he diligently explained what we got with our deal. A mezze platter and anything we wanted for main & dessert. I mention this detail, because I have often felt like persona non grata when I have used a groupon at a restaurant, receiving substandard food and service and I think this open-armed attitude should be applauded. The mezze platter arrived to a round of oohs and ahhs from the table. It was pretty epic. The lovely owner enthusiastically explained all the dishes: homemade hummus, stuffed vine leaves, chicken wings, warm potato salad, falafel, flat bread and fattoush (a traditional salad of green leaves with soumak and fried bread). Each individual morsel was delightful, but for me the crisp coriander falafel and the zingy lemony fattoush were the stars of the show! For main I went for lamb toushrana, a sumptuous tagine with heart-achingly succulent lamb, apricots, dates & sultanas accompanied by (possibly the most perfectly cooked I have ever eaten) rice...heaven! Dave had lamb shawarma with (possibly slightly to his shame) chips. Which looked much less exciting to me, but he loved it. Thinking it could not get better. Dessert arrived. Crunchy gooey homemade baklava and Mahalabi (a panna cotta type dish made with rose water topped with pistachios). Stunning!

However, little was I to know that my mouth and belly were both in for such a treat. We had the Cardamom tea (not strong enough for my liking) and mixed mezze to share, which was mouth wateringly delicious. Even the salad dressing was taste bud tingling, absolutely loved it. Between us we then went for Lamb Shawarma and Tourshana. I couldn't fault the lamb. Succulent and tasty to the end. Then came dessert, oh sweet dessert. Mahalabi and Baklava between us. We were very satisfied customers. Lebanese food definitely agrees with my mouth and belly. The owner/waiter was courteous and easy to chat to, throughout. He used to be an engineer and when the recession hit he set up Afendi. If his engineering is as good as his cooking I'd like to see some of his feats of engineering! Loved the Afendi logo, unfortunately the mugs aren't for sale!

It's a very versatile restaurant, so you can take away your pitta, or take a seat and eat in. If you're not against the clock, it's also worth opting to upgrade to a plate for a proper sit down meal. My personal preference is to take away, the experience is generally seamless, you go to the counter and one of the friendly staff take your order, you take a seat and wait no longer than 10 minutes (maybe 15 during peak times) for your order. Once you've collected your food, make your way to the salad bar and indulge in the selection of sauces and fresh salad, fill your pitta to your heart's content, et voila! Wherever you choose to eat it, sit back and enjoy the flavour sensation. Carnivores, do not fear! Their schnitzel and shawarma options are great too, I personally prefer the schnitzel, and highly recommend a half and half schnitzel/falafel pitta. Out of this world. There are other options such as omelette too, but I've not had the pleasure of trying them yet. Baklava is freshly made, and I cannot encourage you enough, if it is available on the day. The only downfall is that opening times can vary. Sometimes they are open fully through the day, other times they take a break between lunch and dinner, but you are guaranteed to be fed if you arrive before 3pm most days. (Seem to be closed on Sundays & Mondays)
