You wouldn't know it from outside, but when you step into Falafel King on Cotham Hill, you're only 5 or 6 steps away from one of the most amazing dining experiences in Bristol. And it's not (just) the food that sets Falafel King apart. Walk down stairs and you'll find a hidden, middle eastern cavern of cushions, sequins and beautiful lighting that is like nothing else I've seen. The space is so nice and so well done you instantly forget that you're in Bristol. Just to the back of this room is a little Shisha Garden with pond and more cushions and bean bags. We came a couple of weeks ago and had some tea, then some food and then just chilled in the Shisha garden for an hour or so. It was so good! The food is incredibly fresh and the mint tea is so refreshing I could drink it all day. In fact, I found out that it wasn't actually tea, but a specific type of mint leaves, which makes me like it even more. I've eaten here a number of times and everything has been great. I particularly liked the mezze platter as it gives you the opportunity to sample lots of stuff. This would be such a great place for a different birthday or work party. I was taken here on the recommendation of my girlfriend who suggested it for a quick bite to eat on Saturday lunchtime. To be honest I'm glad we did, I absolutely love middle eastern food and this place was perfect. Everything was freshly prepared, their falafels are absolutely amazing and the portion size was great, whilst being healthier than other restaurants. I went for a falafel laffa which costs roughly £4.50 but was absolutely huge, it comes with 6 falafel, hummus, all sorts of salad and then a choice of condiment on top (I went for garlic mayo) I would say I have a large appetite and this left me feeling full, not bad for £4.50! I took a photo of the same laffa with my girlfriend to give you an idea of size. Being slightly greedy I also bought some of the flapjack which is partially dipped in chocolate for £1. To my eyes it seems to be the chewy granola slices from Sainsbury's finest range dipped in some milk chocolate, a bit of a mark up but still a nice idea. Would definitely recommend the place, I'll be returning soon. If only I worked near it, I'd go there every lunch! read more

What a hidden gem! Falafel king doesn't look like much from the outside but down a few steps and you're in the Middle East. It's stunning! I had a platter of stuffed leaves, homemade hummus, tzatziki, pitta and other unidentified yummy treats! I also had a green tea (and the waitress had told me all about the teas and the options available) and we went nuts and had an apple shisha! The service was great, there was a thoroughly authentic atmosphere and we sat on Moroccan-style cushions in a tiny garden out the back, surrounded by beautiful ornaments and lamps! It was an amazing surprise haven in amongst the hectic bustle of Whiteladies Road. read more

Wow what a place! Upstairs looks like a normal cafe. Then once walking downstairs its like being transported to another country! They have done such a fantastic job of the decor I'm actually very jealous, wish my house was like it! They have a cute little garden where you sit on cushions and enjoy a flavoured shisha pipe. The food was very delicious with lots of flavours, freshly cooked with loads of effort put into the presentation...the pita breads are to die for, along with some good wine! Just before getting back onto Whiteladies Road, the falafel king is in a prime position - not too far away from the main road, but also not too close to it to be a haunt for all the drunken rabble that's likely to be milling around on their way to town at a weekend. The falafel king serves up a host of falafel based foods (all vegetarian), in a calm, turkish themed environment which really gives the place a nice atmosphere. Although it's mainly take-away orientated, you can sit down and enjoy their fresh creations in an almost restaurant atmosphere. It's pretty good value - I paid about £4.50 for a really hearty falafel wrap. The only let down is there's no meat, but clearly that's not the ethos or vibe they're going for, so I'll let that one slide. read more

Mmm falafel...reminds me of festivals. This is a great little shop to have here. They make delicious falafel and it's a great place to get your lunch from. I honestly can't think of anywhere else you can actually get falafel from nearby (especially falafel this tasty). I was worried when this shop opened that the demand for falafel might not be so big and it might not last. I'm glad I seem to have been proved wrong. It's such a nice change from the usual sandwich/Panini/flatbread/baguette (you get the idea) shops. Usually you have to wait until you go to a festival or on holiday to get falafel this good. The manager is lovely and welcoming. They have all the right salad and garnish to go with your falafel as well, you couldn't make anything like this at home (unless you own a Falafel King). I'm a meatarian (the complete opposite of a vegetarian) and I love this place; it isn't juts for veggies at all. And I hope we get to see more diversity in the food places we see open around town. read more

How this can be called a restaurant is beyond me. After reading the reviews I am somewhat confused if the owners or staff have changed over. After travelling all the way from Bath me and my boyfriend were in search of dairy free restaurants in Bristol and this place came up tops. The customer service is diabolical and the worse I have come across in Bristol. I walked in expecting a restaurant and someone to guide us to our seats and hand us a menu. Instead we had to walk up to a counter and look at a board and pick what we wanted, asking what was vegan the staff looked at me and my partner like we were idiots saying everything was. We later learnt this was lie when my partner had an allergic reaction. Unsure on what to get by the unclear layout of the menu and the little help from the staff ( one in particular screwed up her face) we choose to pick an £8 dish that sounded amazing but when it was dished out I couldn't believe what I had just paid for, a deconstructed falafel wrap on a plate.... for the price of £8. Not only that when we saw the size we decided we actually could not share it as the portion was tiny! so we asked for another, the staff sighed like she just couldn't be bothered and said 'great I have to put 2 other cigars in'. Having to carry our own plates downstairs we proceeded to carry on hoping that the taste was what made its reviews top. Sadly, the food was dull and tasteless and had been left out all day. When these 'cigars' came out it was literally overdone fried battered mush. At this point we had had enough especially after it was dumped on our table after around 15 minutes later. When we asked for a refund, they refused and acted like they simply didn't care about there lack of customer service if any, and the fact they had fed my partner dairy. While standing there we also noticed that w we didn't even get what we paid for and they missed out the bread that was promised on the board with every dish. read more

I am not usually one for veggie food - I like my meat. However, I had lunch here for a friend's birthday and really enjoyed the food. I knew from the bright lime green exterior that the place would be modern and fresh. The interior was quite ornate, with middle-eastern style lanterns by the window, but apart from that the place was fairly basic. After high expectations from other reviews, a huge disappointment. I've been searching for an authentic lebanese or other middle eastern cafe / restaurant since moving from London six months ago, and to be blunt this isn't it. The location and atmosphere are ok, but the decor is far too tacky, over the top, and clichéd. After dining in several modern and contemporary middle eastern eateries (see Beirut Street Food), this is frankly embarrassing by comparison. The food seemed to be the best part, although the baklava we tried was rather poor, and the "Arabic coffee" was dismal. Neither the coffee or the mint tea were in anyway close to being authentic. The large selection of vegetarian food available is this restaurant's saving grace and therefore it narrowly avoids a one-star rating. read more

Well, I'd call it fast food, but fast food that's healthy, tasty, and not a burger or chips. This is the restaurant version of the popular city centre street stall. Decked up out in bright greens and yellows it's where you can get a quick lunch without feeling like you're feeding the corporate machine or clogging up your arteries horrifically. The falafels are a hearty size, with fresh salad. Plenty of sauces to choose from, though be sparing because the foods plenty tasty enough without any topping. There isn't much else apart from falafels, except humus. It's all vegetarian too. So basically like a really good kebab shop with the actual kebab taken out and replaced with a falafel. Although it isn't really a restaurant they open late, making this just the spot for a refuel if you're drinking around Whiteladies Road. Falafel King is fast, quick, and tasty. read more

This is a great little restaurant that does exactly what it says on the tin and little else. The menu isn't huge; felafels in different types of bread...but the staff are really friendly and there's plenty of room to sit down and much if you're not in a hurry. The restaurant is set amongst several cafes near the Clifton Down Shopping Centre and the prices are very reasonable. Perhaps try dropping in in the evening for an inexpensive meal before blowing your budget on the pricier wine bars on Whiteladies. read more

Falafel is something I've always been pretty sceptical of because I had never really known what it was exactly for ages, and it just so happens that this little place is where I tried my firs falafel! It's basically a great vegetarian option made from chickpeas - and this takeaway prides itself on its vegan and vegetarian range! They offer thing like pitas filled with veggie things, houmous and salads etc - the word fresh springs to mind! I actually think its good to have somewhere that doesn't serve meat, because it makes a change and provides somewhere that is devoted completely towards veggies. Basically Falafel King is in the style of a takeaway or kebab shop, but without any of the grease and with a much healthier outlook on food. It's also open till late, so it's great for people who have finished clubbing and want to grab some good healthy grub - instead of a doner kebab! It is also great during the day to grab a snack or a light lunch on the move - they do also have seating indoors if you fancy a sitting down over your food, but it's not the nicest place to eat in as its not reallllly a restaurant! read more

As a new vegetarian in Bristol, I found the Falafel King on my first day in town. It's still the place that I suggest for lunch the most often. For about £3.50 you get a large pita (that was freshly made by the same people that run Falafel King), 6 big falafel balls, lots of salad and your choice of sauces. There are larger and more varied options on the menu, too - but I never get past the falafel pitas... they're fantastic. The guy that owns Falafel King is really friendly - the rest of the staff are more your average "I'm just here to make some cash" variety. Only potential down-sides are that they don't accept cards and it can be tough to find a seat at lunch time. But neither of those things stop me from going back here again and again. read more

I read some reviews saying that they were disappointed by the place/food as they were expecting authentic Lebanese food. I was too when I visited. This is a lovely place to eat. I would recommend it without hesitation from that point of view. However, I did have a really quite unpleasant experience on the phone, whilst trying to book a table.
