The Taz set the stage for our most amazing day of our trip to Alaska. We went whale watching on the morning trip with about 20 other people on The Taz. Coffee, tea and granola bars are provided and there is plenty of viewing room inside and out on the deck (where we spent most of the time).
The captain and our tour guide both provided us with tons of interesting and informative information about the area, the habitat, and the whales. And the boat got us incredibly up close and personal with the humpbacks- we were so close, we even got sprayed by their breath (smells fishy, in case you were wondering!). We saw tons of whales and even had a young one that kept swimming right up to the boat. It was the most breath-taking thing I've ever seen! We had a few hours out on the water and plenty of whale-watching time.
Plus, there is a hydrophone on the boat, so you can hear the whales talking and clicking and singing underwater- it was the coolest thing I've ever heard!
I wish we had gone out a second time -this trip is completely worth it and so much better than whale-watching on a big boat (like the Glacier Bay glacier day cruise) or cruise ship. Don't miss this trip. Make reservations in advance and call a few days ahead to ask about recent whale sightings - they might recommend you wait or go earlier to see the most whale action. We ended up going two days earlier than our planned trip as the whales had been busy feeding and we didn't want to miss it. Also, bring a warm coat- its cold out on the water once the boat gets going! read more
