    Smoked salmon chowder

What seems to be a tourist trap in Hoonah is actually an incredible restaurant I'd recommend trying. Contrary to the name there is no duck rip. The recommendations of what to get is the halibut sandwich and the smoked salmon chowder. Parents said the halibut was the best bite they had (and as someone who had a bite of it, it was cooked well and had the perfect grill marks). There was a halibut pizza which was okay but had too much ranch and was a bit too gimmicky. The smoked salmon chowder was the star of the day and an Alaskan staple. They didn't skimp on the salmon which was great and it was super flavorful throughout.

Cecilia- the most patient server on the planet... Please find a job elsewhere, where you're appreciated.

Duck Point Smokehouse Restaurant was ill prepared to receive as many guests as it did! We waited in line for a ridiculous amount of time to order a beer. Then again, we had to wait in a different (long) line for another ridiculous amount of time, to order food. . I honestly couldn't believe the chaos and mismanagement that we experienced at this establishment. On a sidenote; Cecelia (working the bar) was dealing with disgruntled customers the entire time that we were there, (she did so graciously). This poor employee was being chastised for the restaurant, running out of IPAs and APAs and whatever else. The line would have moved more effectively had there been more people behind the bar. The only time we saw another employee, was when an older woman dropped by and emptied the tip container - a container that that *Cecelia had *earned by *herself. Cecelia was spectacular and the four of us in our party, hope she quits and finds a place that appreciates her. We would **positively skip this place next time.

After screaming down in cold rainy weather on the longest zipline in the world, we found ourselves in front of the Duck Point Smokehouse (adjacent to the zipline landing point) and decided to try out a few beers. We didn't order any food during our visit, so this review only focuses on beer. THE DRINKS | Variety of beers on tap. I'm sure there are other drinks, but when there's a row of beer taps sitting in front of you, it's kind of hard to see anything else. We ordered... - Cannery Red Ale | Alaskan brew by Denali Brewing Co. Malty with a nice, crisp finish. There's a slight bitterness but not overpowering. - Smash Galaxy Double IPA | By Alaskan Brewing Co. Brewed with Australian Galaxy hops and Northwest Pilsner Malt. It's quite bitter and tropical at the same time. And I say this with all IPAs... it tastes a little like weed. THE DUCK POINT SMOKEHOUSE FEELS | Situated in front of Port Frederick, there are large glass windows and a covered outdoor dining area which offer unobstructed breathtaking views of the water and surrounding mountains. There's a huge fireplace near the restaurant entrance and a modern fire pit located at the outdoor patio. The vibe is modern cabin/lodge house with a spacious dining hall.

    Carrillo's Caldo - Karioka

As we rounded the corner southbound on Marine Way, we saw a cloud of smoke wafting in the wind, and a huge line of people. Would we join it? Of course; the smell was too good to pass up. The line ended up taking about 20 minutes, and soon afterwards we sat down at a nearby picnic table to eat. Combo 1 ($19) - This combo dish comes with two skewers and rice. We went with one of each skewer: Chicken Skewer - Fantastic char on the exterior with blackened almost charcoal-like crunchy bits, but no burnt acridity at all. The skewer is covered with a supremely tasty sweet and savory glaze. The caramelized glaze penetrates every bite of the meat. The chicken is a little dry, but the flavor is phenomenal. (5/5) Pork Skewer - Similar to the chicken, great char, great flavor, but unfortunately the meat on this skewer is a little too far gone in terms of moisture. It's almost like eating a pork jerky given how desiccated the meat is. (4/5) The rice is not good. It's very undercooked with a disturbingly firm texture, making it difficult to eat. The only way we could stomach eating it was liberally pouring condiments on top. Luckily, the truck has a plethora of condiments to choose from. There's white vinegar, spicy apple cider-ish vinegar, and plenty more. Even with all the flavor enhancements, we ended up not finishing the rice. (1/5) We also ended up ordering dessert here: Karioka ($5) - Pretty nice sweet skewer... or at least it would be if it had been fresh. I could tell that the inside used to be bouncy since it seems to be made from glutinous rice flour. It's fried, so there's a doughy chew as well, but it's too far on the firm side, indicating lack of freshness. It does have a good coconut flavor and the outside is nicely sweetened. I think the exterior used to have a crisp sugar shell ala tanghulu, but again it's softened by the passing of time and moisture degrading the dessert. Still, it's tasty enough and nice to eat. (3/5) If I'm ever in Juneau again, I'd visit Carrillo's again, but for the chicken skewers only! I would definitely not get anything containing rice again. Maybe Filipinos like their rice undercooked and hard, but not me!

Very tender, flavorful pork. Whole dish was gently sour, allowing the ginger flavor to still come through nicely. Longanisa and bbq pork skewers are the easy choice for Filipino food newbies. These were well executed here. The strong sweet/savory flavors are complemented/cut by the plainness of white rice for a tasty, filling experience. Together - this is Filipino comfort food at its meaty/carby best.
