The Tax Connection business card
Ha'Ane T.

I scheduled an appointment with Paula to complete my taxes for the beginning of the year and she was professional from start to finish. Paula actually helped me in figuring out a hiccup within my taxes (one that I would not be able to figure out on my own) and filed my G45 taxes all in one sitting in a reasonable time frame. She is very easy to work with, her rates are very affordable, and she also has a lot of experience under her belt. I will definitely be referring her to friends, family and business associates, and continue to use her throughout the year. The Tax Connection is located in the same building as the Warrior Ohana Clinic and is in between Kapolei and Ewa Beach. If you are located in either areas, I would check her services out or give her a quick call. Thank you again Paula!

She's super knowledgeable and understanding and even takes the time to give advice on how to make things easier and cheaper for next year. Just an overall AMAZING experience! After reading information on their website, we pre-printed the necessary forms and brought in the requested paperwork hoping we could get a walk in. We came in on a weekday afternoon and was welcomed in by Alma. When we came in she was available to take us however they didn't have enough "tables" to take us in so we had to schedule an appointment in which they were readily available and open a month before taxes were due. Since we already looked online for the appropriate forms and documents, Alma treated our paperwork as a drop off and was able to take everything for us right there and then. I did ask her if we could keep our originals of our IDs, SSN cards, and birth certificates since it was our first time filing there and she was able to do it on the spot. Also she checked and verified that we had everything needed for filing purposes and to assist us getting the best return possible and she guided us for additional paperwork we didn't even think of including! She was very tentative to our questions as we were first time co home owners and also not yet married so we were concerned how it would affect our individual returns but she was so courteous and helpful with all of the answers she provided to us. By the time it was for our appointment, she had a cancelation prior to ours and offered for us to come earlier if we wanted to. She also had already inputting our numbers and did a "pre crunch" on the different types of filing on which would best benefit us as a whole for which the house should go under. Long story short, her numbers matched spot on and we went with our best choice of filing and got the most we've ever receieved on a return so far. We were there for only 30 minutes, signed the official documents and we were good to go! Going forward Alma will definitely be out tax person. We also both received our tax return via direct deposit for both federal and state within 2.5 weeks of filing with no issues.

Over the past 35 years, we've solicited the help of a number of tax preparers, all by referrals. We've learned about the differing styles of the various CPAs, as some are conservative, interpret tax laws in black and white, or are liberal in their interpretations. As we were looking for a CPA that was liberal in their tax law interpretation and yet within the requirements of the law, our Estate Attorney recommended Tamilyn Masuda CPA to us in 2012, as he was using her and was satisfied with her services. Since 2012, Tamilyn has been our CPA for our tax needs, and we are very satisfied with her. In fact, we consult with her throughout the year, and not only during tax time, as we've consulted with her on the tax effects of purchasing/selling investment property, creating a LLC, looking at retirement account options, estate planning, and tax liability reduction. Tamilyn is very accommodating, as we could call her with questions anytime during the year at no charge. She is friendly, personable, and easy to talk to. We haven't had any problems with our tax returns. I do categorize my receipts and create x-cell worksheets to make it easier for Tamilyn to put things in order. It's also a self-check for me if there is a payment transaction issue that needs to be followed up on. A face-to-face appointment is then made with Tamilyn to go over the worksheets and any issues that we have. We've always have had timely responses in completing our returns, and Tamilyn will call if she needs further clarification or receipts. We request a draft of our return so that we can review the entries and get any clarifications, if needed. Once we give approval, the tax return is finalized by having us sign the documents. With the current Covid-19, however, social distancing required some changes. We were fortunate to have had a face-to-face appointment as we had scheduled it before the procedural changes. Now, all receipts and documents are to be mailed in or dropped into a box just outside the office's front door by calling staff prior to dropping off. They will retrieve them, and Tamilyn will start reviewing them in preparing the tax return. Upon completion, a phone call would be made for you to pick up your return, and sign any documents in the box outside the front door. Local-born Tamilyn has more than 30 years of accounting experience, including 7 years as an IRS Auditor for small businesses. With this knowledge and experience, she started her business, Tamilyn Masuda CPA, as she has the IRS insight not only to assist small businesses, but also to individuals, corporations, partnerships, LLCs, estates, and non-profit organizations. She provides services in bookkeeping, payroll, tax planning and preparation, audit representation, estate planning, and divorce/support issues. She is assisted by her adult daughter, Shauna, who is well equipped with accounting knowledge and experience, and additional staff during the busy times. Tamilyn's office is on the 2nd floor above the Original Pancake House in the Waiakamilo Shopping Center in Kalihi. There is a secured entry, as you will need to call her office on the intercom on the 1st floor at the foot of the stairs. She will buzz you in once you give your name and the reason why you're there. Office hours are Mon. to Fri. from 8a-4p, with extended hours during tax time. Yes, we have finally found a CPA that fits our needs and has the same views of the tax laws and our liabilities to Uncle Sam as we do. Perhaps Tamilyn Masuda CPA can be of the same fit to you too?

She was knowledgeable about starting a small business with an LLC, so I will give her that, but after working with her more, my husband and I have decided she's just not what our business is looking for, especially since we are now growing. We were happy with her service in the start but overtime it was just not up to par. Yes, she can advise on how to start an LLC on our own and do our tax returns, but that is it. If you are looking for someone to help you plan ahead for your business for tax strategies and tax planning, this may not be the place. We only ever heard from her for our returns and that was it. Upon going with another company, we also discovered some forms we did not file but were supposed to, which Kara did not inform us of. For tax returns, there is a portal to download your documents, but there is no "list" or things that we should consider uploading, so it can be a lot of back and forth on- send your expenses, send your mortgage, send this and that or cannot finalize return, etc. It just seems unorganized and if you're dreading taxes, this will make it worse. I also had a return for a different state in 2022 that was not filed (unsure why a different company omitted it). However, I decided to do it independently since Kara mentioned there would be a nominal fee if she did it because she does not know about another state's filing regulations. I asked the previous accounting company if it would cause any problems since it was omitted, and they said it would be ok since the IRS has a matching system and will send us a notification if anything was excluded so we could wait for that. Upon getting the notification, we can decide whether to make an amendment. Kara failed to mention that part. We felt she just wanted us to spend more money to have her do it or something. We moved from MY Personal CPA to her because yearly we would get a different tax preparer so we thought if we went with a smaller company (First Choice Accounting) we would get more personalized help but going with a one person team means getting emails at odd times like late at night and getting missed. Also, even though I did not go with Kara submitting my out of state return, I got charged a one-time $150 fee for Kara reviewing the 2022 tax return which I was not aware of. She was not upfront about the fact that there would be a charge when she asked if I could send her my 2022 return so she could look at it to figure out why the other state W2 was omitted. When I brought up that I was not expecting a charge, she did not reply to me. Finally, she always apologizes for responding late. Her cat got spayed, stayed up late, and was busy. You call her, and she doesn't pick up, but she will reply via email which increases more of the back and forth. This pretty much sums up why we are going with someone else even if we have to pay $400 to part from her since she said she already worked on our return even though she was still asking for documents and more clarification.
