Madison makes it very very hard for both music venues and black owned businesses. We're lucky to have Cafe CODA. Hanah John Taylor, an internationally respected jazz musician and Madison icon, opened this venue to fill the void. It's gorgeous, both spacious and intimate, with a decent stage and sound system and a full bar. He draws a who's who of local musicians, some up and coming, and some out of town acts. Covers are reasonable. To my knowledge no food is served but there's usually a popcorn machine available for free, and many restaurants within walking distance. Some nights offer jazz or funk jams giving musicians an opportunity to sit in. Biggest downside is that there is no offstreet parking, a common problem for Willy St businesses. I wish I had more free time to support Cafe CODA more. If you do, or are looking for a comfortable place to see live music, or even just an east side watering hole, stop by and support Hanah, minority owned business, and local music. Madison needs more places like this.

In town for a convention. Came here instead of doing hotel breakfast because the menu on the…read morewebsite had pretty good prices. In the end I was overcharged like $8. We showed up and ordered. The food came, it was ok but not great. But then the bill came. The menu says the omelette I ordered was $13.50, and I did agree to upgrade the toast to a pancake which was another $3.50. But imagine my sticker shock when I got the bill and it said my omelette was $19, not including the pancake upgrade. Also, my fiancée got the Duke, which was supposed to be $15, and the bill came back $17. When I brought it to the server's attention, she told me it's because we both got cheese and onions which is $1.75 each. On the menu it says nothing about an upcharge for cheese and onions (also, omelettes and skillets don't come with cheese and onions?). Also it didn't add up (literally) the explanation she gave for why it was more expensive. She discounted it 10% which took a few dollars off, but we still got overcharged terribly for mediocre food. I almost feel like we got overcharged to keep us away. "We don't like your kind round here" sort of thing. Vibes based pricing. I dunno. Not happy.

We opted to sit at the bar to eat sooner; it's made of beautiful sculpted wood facing a cute tiled wall. Our waitstaff was so nice and helpful despite being extremely busy with constant orders. I had a mushroom, spinach, and cheese omelette with wheat toast and the signature breakfast salad with warm bacon and onion dressing. The salad is DELICIOUS and I highly recommend it. The omelet was decent-I prefer my ingredients inside the omelet and this restaurant serves the ingredients on top, so it's a preference thing. Anyway, if you are hanging around the downtown Dells, definitely check out this cafe, but be patient because a lot of other folks are, too!

It's long tables covered with red and white checked cloths. Then breakfast. buttermilk pancakes, scrambled eggs, camp fried potatoes, sausage links, ham, and biscuits with gravy, with beverages like coffee and juice included. (Pop if you really want it.) I can write for hours about the amazing quality of the food! Servers swang by regularly ready with refills! And the sugar donuts are the star of the show! Music and Paul bunyon tal tales were on the intercom. Whatever they are doing to get them as thick, creamy and delicious, don't stop. My kids who are avowed egg haters devoured them. The breakfast meats are all top quality. Thick cut bacon, and old style sausage links, both cooked to perfection. The biscuit and gravy is delightful in that way that you can only get by using real ingredients, not from a can. The warm doughnuts are very good, but IMO overrated. They're a cake style that would be mealy once they cooled...not my preference. The ambiance is log cabin shanty with nods to the area's logging past. But honestly by tge time you're seated, you are to frazzled to enjoy it. The bad: The price. When you break it down, it was $90 for four people for breakfast. Ouch! I get it, locally sourced foods, overhead, etc.. but...woah! All in all, we are glad we stopped for the experience. We were saddened to see that the Lumber Jack Show has recently closed. So keep that in mind as you choose your destination.

So be careful not to run anyone over... The theme is cute. The inside is a little worn. The plates and cups have grey marks from silverware. The restaurant is actually very big inside. The service was very prompt. I like that the selection of pancakes flavors was beyond what you usually find at an IHOP. They also do crepes and French toast etc. The portions were pretty big! I shared one a plate of pancakes with another person and we couldn't quite finish it. The pancakes were sweet. I don't think they used fresh berries for the compote. It was satisfying. I would say it's very standard pancakes. Nothing was worthy of taking photos of and posting on social media. It felt old fashioned and no frills. The service was fast and the food was filling.
