Leavenworth Sleigh Rides at Beaver Creek Lodge was an absolute must-do during my trip and made even…read moremore special because it was my very first experience in the snow. Being from Hawaii, this was both exciting and exhilarating to say the least. The lodge is about a 30-minute drive from where we were staying at the Obertal Inn. We purchased our tickets online ahead of time, which I highly recommend since rides can sell out. Upon arrival, everything was well organized with clear signage directing us where to go. Check-in was conveniently located in the same area as the gift shop and coffee stand. Since we didn't want to hold anything during the ride, we waited to shop until afterward. After checking in, we were instructed to meet our guide out front near the fire pit. Once she arrived (I wish I remembered her name!), she walked us over to our carriage. It ended up being our lucky day because we had the carriage entirely to ourselves, which made the experience feel even more magical and intimate. Throughout the ride, our guide shared background history of the area and pointed out wildlife we might spot along the way. Sitting bundled up in the cold, surrounded by peaceful winter scenery, was such a serene and unforgettable experience. Before heading back, we stopped for hot apple cider which was absolutely delicious and exactly what we needed in the freezing temperatures. We also had the chance to take photos with the horse, who was incredibly sweet and even let us pet him. Overall, this experience exceeded all expectations. If you ever find yourself in Leavenworth, I would 100% say this is a must-do. It's a beautiful, memorable way to take in the winter magic of the area.

I'd found an interpretive trail online, Icicle River Nature Trail, and while there are no signs…read moreanywhere in the area that we could find, it turns out it's here at the hatchery. The place is huge, although outside of a few groups of children and guides on tours, there weren't a lot of people around. We found our way to the trail past the hatchery tanks and followed most of the winding paths. As far as wildlife today, we were only able to spot one lizard, some butterflies and birds. The trail itself was fairly uneventful. The mountain views were stunning, but there wasn't a lot more to see today. As we wandered back to the parking lot we took a peek at a few different sections of tanks, most of which were empty, but we were able to see fish in a couple. I was definitely very happy to see a sweet little pollinator garden near the entrance.

We signed up for a snowshoe tour right before Christmas and even though they said on their website…read moreonly one tour would be given every Saturday, several rangers came out and volunteered to accommodate everyone who had signed up. There were several tours given throughout the morning and they really did a great job to include everyone. We had a very nice ranger who mentioned she doesn't usually do the tours but with so much interest she had come in to help out. She was so passionate about wildlife and had led a really interesting scientific career including working in Antarctica. She helped us all clumsily get into our snowshoes and our little group of about 10 or so made our way out into the snow. We talked about the fish hatchery and the life cycles of the salmon. We saw otter tracks and learned that they are both cute and viscious (if you happen to be a salmon that is). We searched for birds, squirrels and other rodents, learned about plants and foliage, and admired the lovely view and enjoyed being out in nature. Partway through we took a break and she surprised us by Mary Poppins style, pulling out granola bars and hot cocoa from her hiking pack. Pretty dang generous especially considering this tour is a free activity. The adventure lasted about an hour and a half which was just enough to work up an appetite so we're could go back to Leavenworth and enjoy some more great eats.

(almost 4-hrs). My work office is driving a city bus with a million dollar view of the Cascades, Mt Rainier, the Olympics and Space Needle. Dale flies his awesome office with equally, ok sometimes better, more spectacular views. And much less traffic! Takeoffs and landings were so smooth, Dale knows the history and people in the area and always made sure we were comfortable during the flight. We were less than a minute away from our RV at Kamei Campground and took off toward toward north Lake Chelan, the mountain vistas and smaller inland lakes and trails. We landed at the Stehekin State Airport then visited Stehekin Pastry Company, Rainbow Falls and the original Stehekin School. We took off then flew over to Stehekin Valley Ranch for dinner, met some of the nice staff and guests there, then we took off for the final flight back to Manson, admiring the sights and enjoying the personal and actual history of the area from Dale. Everything was memorable - the flight, sights and stories, the people we met, the food and the unique experience of flying, taking off and landing 3 times in a helicopter. There is a 3-passenger and 500-lb max for the flight. You're given headphones to muffle the engine noise and provide communications during the flight. No reports of motion sickness from the family, ventilation was good and even a light rain was fascinating as it beaded off the bubble canopy on the return flight. Bring a camera that can take photos and videos but remember to put it down every now and then to truly admire the smoothness of the flight and in-your-face natural beauty of the area. You'll also appreciate the history that Dale tells you with pride about growing up to work, raise a family and enjoy his home space on land and in the air. A mile of road takes you a mile, a helipad can take you anywhere and generate so many smiles! We highly recommend Lake Chelan Helicopters for a truly memorable experience from Chelan to Stehekin.
