This place had a minimalistic feel. It was clean, bright and felt spacious. I ordered three different mini cheesecakes: cherry, oreo and chocolate which were so deliciously rich and smooth. The cherry added a bit of tanginess. The little bits of crushed oreos added a nice texture. The chocolate was decadent. The customer service was top notch. The man at the counter was so patient and helpful. They also make dog treats which contained natural ingredients. Our dog was quite happy with them. I got an Iced Matcha Latte at the Orillia location. The drink was awful, fishy seaweed with a hint of something else pungent. Undrinkable unfortunately. The worker was very obviously irritated of me asking for extra ice and more milk with a slightly snarky comment of "Well I already put milk in there but I can put more in." The picture speaks for itself. I'm not angry about this as I do like their butter tarts but for the price and even if it was free- the matcha is undrinkable and disgusting. They definitely need to revaluate their matcha recipe (possibly better quality matcha as well!" Also- when it was handed to me there was a brown liquid layer on top. Ugh. read more

This is a great place to bring award winning tarts (Canadian living and barrie) to the cottage or visiting friends. Location: First plaza off the 400, on maple view plaza(north east) lots of parking around the "round about" style parking lot. Tarts: I've tried all the flavours now and love the consistency of the tarts and shells. These ooey gooey tarts need to be eaten over a plate (see my video of the molten paced ooze). It's hard to pick a favourite, Pecan & raisin are solid 5*, Raspberry & blueberry are still unique finds with medium sweetness, but peanut butter and coconut are really sweet and can also hit your sweet tooth. Try them all, you won't be disappointed! Goods are made once daily and that's it. Prices: $2.50 each, 6 for $12, $24 for dozen. Decent pricing as I've had others for $4-5/each! Staff: It's family run, and all the ladies are mainly pleasant to a, take it or leave it demeanor. They seem desensitized to clients disappointment that flavours sell out at noon and they open until 8pm. They won't take phone orders and pre orders via long weekends. I called at open to set aside 6-12, and offered to pay credit card over phone for pick up later. She replied probably not, asked a colleague and confirmed no they're not allowed, it's purposely first come on weekends, "as it could be busy". Not great customer service or store policy. They could accommodate by making a Second batch to accommodate the holiday rush, but instead they keep the store open to 8pm with nothing to sell, as I've seen in the past and upset customers. read more

Have been searching for this place for 3 years after my daughter randomly stopped with friends and picked up butter tarts. They told her it's the best place. She bought hslf a dozen and brought them home. They took me back to my childhood of fresh, homemade gooey deliciousness. After inquiring from several friends and googling l finally found the bake shop. It's in the outlet mall across from Costco in Barrie. I bought a dozen, took them home and am planning another trip to Barrie when l plan to stock up for Christmas. The flavors are amazing and there is a good variety of options from original plain, pecan, blueberry, maple coconut and the one l have been saving...peanut butter. The reviews were extremely positive to this flavor. So if you're a butter tart loving fanstic you need to check this place out in Barrie. You will Not be disappointed. read more

I couldn't tell you how many times I've been here. it's just THAT good. I love the basic ones: plain, pecan & raisin (which they have EVERYDAY). but the speciality ones, those are also to die for. while I was there I decided to try their iced chai latte. I normally get a regular iced chai tea latte from starbucks, so I knew it's similar enough. it was a good, but I would much rather buy an ice coffee from tim horton's. read more

This bakery is alright. Really they just serve butter tarts so not much variety, but they do offer different flavours which is nice. I wanna love this place! I've tried a large selection of the butter tarts at various events and the quality and various variety of butter tarts is really wonderful. The reason I've given them a two star is because of their staff and the availability of their products. I've been at this location in the morning and in the middle of the day and even once at the end of the day and the wonderful variety of butter tarts I've seen at various events are NEVER AVAILABLE. Ok ok I've heard rave reviews from Barrie residents about how amazing this place is and how their butter tarts usually sell out before closing so there was no way I wasn't going to gorge in a few tarts myself! Located at the new Park Place plaza, The Sweet Oven is located near the center aisles (had to go in a few circles to find it, why don't they put up directional signs??). I had no idea that this was not a franchise and this was the only store that existed. It's small, plain, and does not have any seating inside. They sell a variety of flavors of tarts (which change each day), a few cheesecakes, and basic selection of pop and drinks. The crust of their tarts is perfection - so crumbly and soft, and their filling is super gooey. My favourite flavours from Monday's selection would be Coconut, Mixed Nuts, and Coffee. You can really taste the flavours in all of these. My biggest reason for taking off a star is how way too sweet these are! I understand the reason behind the name of this place but boy, even a quarter of one of these bad boys was too much. I would strongly suggest sharing these and pairing it with ice cream so it's not too sticky sweet! These would be perfect had the chef toned down on the sweetness factor. read more

I've long considered Barrie my home but much to my chagrin I'd not heard of the Sweet Oven. The waist line is probably thankful but those days are over. What an awesome stop to load up on ooey-gooey goodness. The only problem is trying to figure out which butter tart flavour you are going to go for. Hint-get a box and get 'em all :-) We settled on the raisin and peanut butter as our favourite, but the maple fudge is right up there. The absolute BEST place to go for butter tarts. The top is lightly crisp and chewy and the inside is like liquid gold, syrupy and delicious. This bakery only sells butter tarts (although I've been informed that they may be venturing into cheesecakes soon, too), and they are fantastic. Someone had brought them to a meeting at work and I was hooked. I took them to a potluck dinner yesterday and all the guests raved. The pastry is light and the filling is sweet, gooey, and delicious. They sell a variety of flavours based on the day of the week which include some pretty innovative ones like Skor bit, blueberry, and mint. They specialize in butter tarts. Consider myself a bit of a butter tart aficionado, by far the best butter tarts I have had! Canadian Living has ranked them as the best in Canada. They sell out even on weekdays way before official closing time, which speaks to the quality of the tarts. They sell a variety of flavours which come with runny or regular filings :) Flavours change every day, but plain, pecan and raisin are standard. Wow what can I say about this place... simply amazing everything I could ask for in a buttertart!! I'm a tough critic of buttertarts and always in search of the best and I think I've found it!!! So today I bought plain, chocolate chip, peanut butter and pecan. A plain buttertart is classic and that's the test for me, so I look for a soft pie crust, flavour and thickness it has it all. Then the filling is so important gooey but not liquid, flavour ex using a dark brown sugar not a light, then fullness and well to my surprise the top of the tart had a slight crust top which was perfect!! The peanut butter flavour buttertart was wonderful not a strong peanut butter flavour definitely worth a try :)) love love this store. The biggest failure in a buttertart is one with a runny filling. I bought some pecan buttertarts and some raspberry. The pecan ones were okay. The pastry was good. But the raspberry ones were so runny that most of the filling was out of the tarts and all over the box by the time time I got them home. Very disappointing. Amazing that they call themselves the Best Buttertart in Canada when they can't even execute the most important, basic element in a buttertart. Jesus! Get the filling to congeal a bit. It's not supposed to be a mess of melted butter. It shouldn't be possible to spill the tart's contents! If you want to call yourself "the Best" you can't miss this badly. read more
