I've been going here for haircuts since moving to Omaha and have always left with a great cut. Drew is probably my favorite barber ever, like in my life. Just because he gives great haircuts and is also a super nice and cool/chill guy. I've been to places where it's awkward (I'm sorry but I don't need to hear about your divorce, lady) or the barber has a weird attitude, but Drew is a laid back dude and easy to talk to, so it's a chill 30-40 minutes being stuck on the chair getting a cut from him. I've gotten a haircut from Draven too and it was good too. I always leave happy about my haircut so I definitely recommend this place! read more

I read Mitch's review and was intrigued to try this place out. Bonus that the Surly Chap is relatively close to where I live. I strolled in on a weekday afternoon at around 4 p.m. There was a short wait in the seating area directly next to the two barbers who were hard at work. No bother to me, as there were stacks of "manly" magazines on a coffee table plus That '70s Show on the TV. I opted to browse through the most recent issue of Mad Magazine, which I hadn't "read" in a dozen-plus years. (Even though it's not as good as it used to be, I'm happy that it's still around and, damn, I still love Spy Vs. Spy.) Once I was up, I briefly described my minimal hair-cutting preferences and was on the way to the best haircut I've had in, well, maybe ever. It's worth mentioning that over the last few years, I've been to a few different barbers in Omaha, and while I've had many fine haircuts along the way, I have to say that Surly Chap's Drew (forgive me if that's the wrong name) fixed me up with the most even, fine-tuned cut I've had to date. There was even a quick shave of my neck and around the ears. Plus a shoulder massage for good measure. If you're like a lot of other guys and have being going to salons for years, I'd recommend trying out a real-deal barber shop like the Surly Chap. I doubt you'd go back to your salon, especially considering the Surly Chap is quite a bit cheaper for a way better haircut. read more

This is my regular barber shop. I usually come in about every 2-3 weeks for a neck shave and a beard trim, and about once a month I throw a haircut in the mix. Lou, Drew, and Lauren are all extremely skilled with a scissor and a blade, and always do a great job. The one complaint I have about this shop is the wait time as they are walk in only, and being one of the best barbershops in town, theres usually a line of 5-6 guys sitting there waiting, but it is definitely worth the wait. Protip: get there about 20-30 minutes before they open to get a good spot in line. read more

Literally, saw it all in my 1+ hour visit to Surly Chap waiting for my SO to get his hair situated prior to a night out...which was more like a man-spa than what I imagined the "barber" experience to be. I admit, I was a bit jealous. Ambience is great - a very relaxed, man vibe (whatever that means). The skill level of the barbers seemed spot on as I watched a rotation of customers arrives looking a bit disheveled and depart in a more handsome, relaxed fashion. Ridiculously affordable (entire service was less than $50 +tip), I thought they incorrectly charged him for the visit. Top notch old skool barber shop. Great vibe and very talented barbers. Booking is simple by using the Resurva app, really handy gives you text reminders and books on your calendar. Big snaps to my guy Richard, I hate to put the review out there because it might make it even harder to get a booking. However if you rock a beard, he is top notch. In from out of town and I needed a cut. I called 3 times throughout the morning to see if they could get me in and Noone ever answered the phone. I decide to drive over across town and just go and when I get there there are zero people waiting in the waiting area. They tell me that they are full but if I want to wait 3 hours they can get me in. There were 5 people cutting hair and most of them looked almost done with what they were doing. I have no problem with appointment only, but make sure you answer the phone if you are booked up, it's unprofessional and why I'm leaving a 1 star review. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. Went in with a full handlebar stache and came out with an uneven mullet of a stache. I emailed a few days before booking the appointment asking if they had someone that could handle trimming a huge mustache. I was told yes! Then I hear and see the clippers against my face before I can even speak up. Then half the beard comes off after I ask for a trim and not a cut.... Don't waste your money on a $46 service that should cost $20 according to the skill level of the "barber" that butchered my face. I stumbled upon this place while driving on 60th Street a couple months ago. I was in need of a new haircut and had my last one butchered by the ol' local Master Cuts. I looked up their Facebook page and thought the place seemed legit. Let me tell you, they are! I can remember growing up and having my mom take me into barbershops, enjoying the discussion, and "man talk." The care of a man giving another man a haircut was somehow mixed in there as well. With all of the changes in mass marketed hair salons and getting your hair done by your girlfriend/wive's $35 stylist, something needs to change for men. The Surly Chap Barbershop is just this. When arriving into the business, they have a TV, a display of "craft/artisan" hair/beard/skin care products for men. Not your average Crew or Aveda for men stuff either. They have a couple places to sit and watch the TV. Their price point is right on par with any other place in town. $15 for a haircut, back of the neck and around the ear shave, and shoulder massage vibrating thing. They did a fantastic job with my haircut. The barbers were nice, clean, and efficient. All others leaving there seemed to be coming out happy too. On another note, you could get both your head and neck shaved with a straight razor as well. The only conundrum for some is they are walk-in only. So no appointment is necessary and you may have to wait during some experiences. read more

I am sorry surly chap, as I understand not taking appointments adds to the ambience and experience of the service you are intending to provide but I think you need to change that. I got both my husband and dad a gift card here for Father's Day. My husband came in on a Friday, got there before it opened, ended up being 7th in line and still had to wait 1.5 hours to have his cut and shave. That is just not reasonable for most people. His cut and shave was about 90 minutes and he enjoyed it, but my husband says there are some patches on the top of his head that are very long and his shave was patchy as well which was visibly noticeable to me. He said around the ears and neck they did a great job. The shave was relaxing and he appreciated the high quality products. For 90 minutes of services it was a very reasonable price of $40. I am happy we tried this out, but due to the fact it was so time-consuming I don't think we will be back. read more

I did not receive the haircut, but I'm extremely satisfied with the outcome of my boyfriend's hair, as well as he. The barber, being a super edgy British lady, was very talented. The hair cut was lined super clean and was even throughout. My bf had asked for a fade, in which he got a smooth transition from the layers. The barber was very attentive and was sure to ask all the necessary questions of what he wanted. Surly Chaps is a small establishment with three chairs, days will be busy and you may be put on a wait, but it's definitely worth it. Everyone before us left with super clean haircuts, even lines, and complete satisfaction from what I saw. If there is a wait, you can read books on the history of tattoos or a selection of other books. Or, you can go up the street for some tacos or coffee--what have you. Wow so I found an amazing weird place to get my haircut in town! Not to mention the fact I came here as Ben's when I was too small to remember it. I think my second haircut ever may have been in this very building........Anyways.... So this is like legit hipster central here. I walk in and the two barbers are wearing skinny jeans, big glasses, huge beards, tattoos everywhere, the patrons look the exact same.....There's like three pairs of wayfarers hanging on the coat rack along with some knitted jackets and there was probably a couple flanel shirts on there...So anyways yeah the inside is pretty small, they've got some wooden benches for you to wait on. I came right at opening and there was like 4 other people already waiting, but it went by fast. I was still here over an hour though. Did I mention I had Cigar Aficianado magazine to read? I will say one thing, my haircut here was fantastic. I barely even heard clippers being used. All scissors. And straight edge razor. The dude cutting my hair (I'm so sorry, I never even got your name!) said that he went to a barber school in Lincoln. Apprently that's good. So I got a pretty basic, short as you can get without buzzing it haircut.. Looked fantastic. And the price was even better. If you're a guy, looking for a great place for a haircut and shave, you need to stop here. A few of my friends recommended this place to me, and I went into it not knowing what I'd be getting. First, parking can be hard. It's near the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and parking is already a trick. They do not take appointments, so you may need to wait a bit, but it's worth the wait. The atmosphere is great. It's an old style barber shop with a few chairs, and everything is fairly retro. My barber was Drew. He did a great job, and put some serious care into his work. You get great treatment here. The haircut is great, you get a neck and around the ear shave, and the whole vibe-o-matic massage for about $15. If you need a beard trim (which I did) it'll run about $5 more. I left feeling and looking great. And the quality and care is so much better than any chain haircut place, and the price is better too. As far as the quality of the haircut, I can only speak to Muriel's ability, but I've always left very pleased. She does a great job and gives me the haircut I ask for. The efficiency is amazing. I make an appointment online from my phone, show up, have never had to wait, and 20-25 minutes later I walk out of there. Best consistent barbershop I've found in Omaha, all things considered. Easily the best haircut I've had in Omaha, and the best Barber Shop in general that I've ever been to. The kind of place that makes you want to hurry home and get on Yelp to write a positive review that you hope will help the business grow. There's something about a straight razor finish that makes a haircut worth so much more than you typically pay for it. I don't have a beard, but if I did, I would want to get it trimmed here (they do that as well). There is a very authentic feel to the place. Can't say enough about this barber shops service and management. I've been 8-10 times. Was going to review the place (was long overdue) on my last visit but I had some issues (which turned out to be a misunderstanding). I emailed them, they responded quickly. Reimbursed me and made a new appt to "fix" things. Upon going back, the service was also free! Wow, I was very impressed by their professionalism. The barbers are all extremely nice and good at what they do (I've had them all). As far as beards go, I prefer Drew and Lew. Maybe I'm sexist, but I feel like they know how to cut facial hair better. . I do the $15 beard trim which gets a straight razor, hot towel and the works. Love how my face feels afterwards! Plus they do the neck line, which saves me a week or so on a haircut. Score . A lot of people complain that there are no walk ins, but their appointment system online is always being updated and I've gotten in a few times same day. They also take credit card (square) and the tipping is easy that way too. You should check this place out! read more

I can't knock Surly Chap too much, but they just recently raised their prices pretty significantly. I used to be able to get in and out with a cut and a beard trim for around $34 before tip. My review of this place is LONG overdue. Since their move to the Blackstone District, I've been coming here for a while now. The on-line booking tool is very convenient where you choose your barber and time you would like to come in. The "write your name on the chalkboard and wait an eternity" are long gone! The friendly and great service that this place is known for remains the same. They've also added to their line of hair/grooming products (I am partial to Uppercut Pomade). If you REALLY like the smell of their products, there are candles available that have the same scent for purchase. read more

The website was really simple to navigate and it was easy to make an appointment. The shop has an awesome vibe with great music, an open feel, and very easy to park and get to. I so desperately want to like this place, but the atrocious wait times and refusal to hire more staff just kill me. I've tried 3 times to get a hair cut here on different days and times. The first time I got turned away two hours after they opened because they were booked for the rest of the day. Second time there was a three hour wait. The final straw was this morning, when they were closed randomly on a Saturday morning for no apparent reason. Don't waste your time trying to get a hair cut here unless you have literally an entire day with nothing to do, because that's how long you're going to be waiting. read more

I got my head shaved for children's cancer in April (St.Baldrick's). My hair is still quite short but I wanted it cleaned up a bit. I walked in, was greeted and instructed to put my name on the board by the door. There was a room full of men aged 20 something to 60 something waiting. I watched as each man was given undivided attention and received a perfect cut. Each of these barbers is meticulous! I was still a bit nervous, being the only woman in the room but the patrons who looked up from their books were very polite. I received as feminine of a cut as I think would have been possible with the small amount of hair I had. I'm very happy with it and wish I were not leaving Omaha soon. I would trust these guys to keep my hair shaped up as I grow it out. Excellent service. Excellent cut. read more
