While visiting Wallaceburg, Ontario before COVID, my son and I visited the Stubby Goat. It was terrific! So, this trip I decided to bring my hunting buddy back. We have now eaten here two days in a row!
I will admit, it doesn't look like much from the outside, but you should really stop and give it a try. Nearly everything on the menu is homemade from scratch. The last time I was here, I had the cabbage rolls. They are still in the menu and equally amazing today, as they were then.
Yesterday we shared the Apple Walnut salad to start. It was exactly as described; fresh spring mix, homemade vinaigrette, green apples, walnuts and feta. Then, we both had the homemade pierogi's. They were hand rolled and topped with cheese and bacon bits and filled with mashed potatoes - AMAZING.
Today, we again shared the same salad, and then I ordered the hand battered perch dinner. They brought it with a side of slaw, fries and the soup of the day; cream of cauliflower. The perch was lightly bartered in an herb crust, fired crispy and they subbed cocktail sauce for tarter (my preference is cocktail) and this dish is as amazing. After growing up on Lake Erie, my perch pallet is pretty sophisticated. I'm here to tell you, this perch is on the money.
The staff was friendly both days, and the patrons even said hello when we came in. Clearly some local regulars who have figured out that this place is a GEM. Local beers to boot. The Sons on Kent 8 track beer was just what the doctor ordered. Crisp, hazy, hoppy, citrus hints....
Bottom line - I can't recommended this place enough. I will be sure to visit on my next trip to the Great White North! It's a beauty way to go, eh!? read more
