I have had two Basses setup here in the last few years, Bryan Litman did a great job and the price was more than fair. I am getting ready to get some advice on a new bass I am purchasing. I have read some of the negative reviews and it sounds like the customers who wrote them were assholes. We have had a great experience with The String and Horn shop for my daughter's violin. We love the fact that they are actually local to Bryan College Station. When she had a broken string they went up to her school orchestra class and replaced it. I didn't even have to take it to them. That was great service in my book. I was told the Stradivarius line was "crappy" and "garbage" by the employee when I inquired of them. PSA for beginner trumpet player's parents. The boy behind the counter was the most unprofessional, disrespectful, uneducated, arrogant person in sales I have ever had the patience to attempt normal patronage with. Customer service here from him spoke volumes enough for me to feel the need to warn parents and possible patrons of this of him. A quote from this person: "Parents from the area (Bryan-College Station) come to talk to me about what trumpet or horn to buy, and they mention the Bach Stradivarius. I make sure to warn them off, because they're garbage. Handmade instruments are better and make sure they buy them over the Bach, because they're better and aren't crappy." I can say - the business is clean and well set up, the counter boy is the issue. I don't believe he speaks for the business. As an old trumpet player and tutor, years in instrument repair, years in professional instrument sales, and once a professional musician I can of this experience say this: The boy behind the counter was the most unprofessional, disrespectful, uneducated, arrogant person in sales I have ever had the patience to attempt normal patronage with. I did not offer my credentials, i did not offer personal feelings, i merely asked about the Strads, and whether they sold them, to which he proceeded to give me his rant on how horrible they are. I actually walked in with the intention of making a purchase of one, and possibly one of the plastic trumpets they had (intriguing, never seen one). His candor, his holier-than-thou arrogance turned me off from wanting to buy, and I decided to leave. Before I did, I merely leaned in to say only one thing to him as a helpful advice: be careful in this job who you say things like that to, you never know who it is you're saying it to. In my former profession, representatives of all instrument brands in the retailer I was employed by would come in, unannounced. So too would people who just believe in respect, such as me, who don't mind contacting retailers or manufacturers of transgressions such as these. I hope the owners read this and retrain their employees. I haven't divulged his name or description because I do not believe in shaming or talking down upon anyone or anyone's views. Here's hoping being a decent person pays off. I only give this all as an honest PSA for anyone heading here - especially for trumpet players and beginning trumpet player's parents. read more

Purchased an Alto Sax from this shop for a student for $2000. The horn was lightly used for two school years. There was nothing wrong with the instrument and no damage other than slight wear which was present when purchased. I asked about selling the horn back and String and Horn offered $70. It costs less than $50 for a refurbish kit and a couple of hours labor to get this horn ready for resale. Pretty good scam for unsuspecting parents of new band students, making about a 1000% profit buying and selling the same instruments. The help was pretty snarky as well. read more

I would NOT Rent from Here if I was Y'all!!! Rented a Flute for My Daughter, which ended up being Broke & Never actually Working Correctly... We contacted Them to fix it & so did the Music Teacher from My Daughters School and No One ever fixed it!!! They told Us when We returned the Flute to Them that the Back Payment that We owed them, which was around $185 because I was going through a Divorce plus I kept telling Them the Instrument would NOT WORK & I was NOT going to Pay for it, but Instead of Them coming to pick it up like They say They will "Supposedly Do" I was supposed to take the Flute to Them & I had NO WAY of doing that!!! So even though They received the Flute back through the Mail They sent the $185 to a Collection Agency & now that is on My Credit Report, because THEY LIED!!! DO NOT GET ANY INSTRUMENTS FROM THEM, BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL TALK & WILL NOT DO WHAT THEY SAY THEY WILL DO!!! read more

I love this place! My son is a second year tuba player. Last year I walked in here needing books (having no idea what I was getting) and the owner knew EXACTLY what we needed! This year we needed a tuba! My son has proven that THIS IS something that he is going to stick with. I never imagined that here, we would find a BEAUTIFUL vintage tuba. It was like it was waiting for my son to put it in his lap and play it. The owner and I sat there and watched him play, and we knew! THAT was the one! Left my guitar there to have the pickup repaired. They never called. 10 days later I called them and they said it is ready. When I picked it up they said there's nothing wrong with it. Dip stick repair tech plugged in in for 15 seconds, strummed it once and said it was fine. It most definitely is NOT fine! If you move 6 inches in any direction the pickup loses the connection and stops working. Don't know how these bozos stay in business. Was without a guitar for 10 days, never got a message or a call from them, and now I'll have to take it somewhere else to get it fixed. Obviously I'll never set foot in that place again. read more

When I called Paul in search of a keyboard to rent for a wedding ceremony, he was more than helpful!! We were concerned the keyboard was not going to have the same sounds as a grand piano but when Paul recommended using his weighted keys with the keyboard, you could not tell the difference!! I recommend stopping by his music shop especially if you are looking to rent instruments for your big day!! I have to say that the string and horn shop has seen better years, I have been going to them since elementary school (I'm in high school now). They are often times unprofessional, undereducated about their instruments, I have been on the receiving end of condescension many times, and God forbid if you need a repair that you ever see your instrument in a timely fashion. I dread going here. It's been 4 years of renting a band instrument and violin. They act as if the customer is an inconvenience. They are frequently out of basic music books. Every time I step into this store, the workers never fail to make me leave angry. They never want to cooperate with what my instrument needs, saying it is unnecessary, and refuse to do it until I am there for about 15 minutes arguing about it. I was forced to play a piece on my instrument for one of them, even though I was obviously not comfortable with that. He could have easily played it and tested it out for himself instead of ridiculing me. If I would have known this store was like this when first renting my instrument, I would have took my business elsewhere. read more

I took a violin in to String and Horn last July for them to give me an offer. It needed no repairs, and I just wanted to know what they'd give me for it. I was told at that time that the owner would call me the next week with an offer. I did not hear from her, so I called back after two weeks. At that time, the owner "wasn't in, but she would call me next Monday when she was back." After that, I called them at least once per month, and they always told me the owner was the only one who could make and offer and "she would call me back." I'd wait a few weeks, and call them back, only to get the same story FOR OVER A YEAR! Then I called them last week, and they said they had lost it, but that I had no claim on it anymore because it had been "abandoned for more than a year." Finally, they found it, and I went in today to get it. But when I got there, they claimed that the case and bow that I had left with it were "old and crappy" and that they had thrown them away. The bow was a wood bow (not fiberglass) worth $75, and the case was purchased new two years ago, and used by my daughter for school only. Online, a used one like it was $50-$75. They offered to give me $40 for the violin and NO compensation for the case and bow, not even a equal replacement. Then, when I tried to leave with the violin, she called the police and claimed that I was leaving with her property because they had replaced the strings and bridge on it (which I hadn't requested for them to do). The police actually came! I had to let her actually TAKE OFF THE STRINGS AND BRIDGE, and leave with it dismanteled, WITHOUT a case and bow. And this doesn't even COVER the rude and disrespectul treatment I received both over the phone and in the store. I was called a liar and told that I was crazy, and one employee, whom I had spoken to regularly on the phone, claimed I had never called before and actually called me a b**ch! Oh! And, at one point, she said I could leave with the violin if I PAID HER $55 for the bridge and strings--on a violin that she just offered me $40 for, and when she would not replace my case and bow!!!!! I do not recommend this store to College Station and Bryan area customers. read more

The repair man is very nice and honest. He took a look at my friends flute, fixed the issue and didn't charge us a dime! He recommended some much needed maintenance but was honest and didn't pressure us to buy anything. I appreciated his honesty and kindness. read more

We came in to this store to rent an instrument for the upcoming school year and were shocked at the difference in rental prices in the area. The sales person gave us a range of rental prices, had a coupon available for the supplies, and knew everything we needed for next year, when we were 'newbies'. If you don't know what you're doing (and we sure didn't), they are extremely helpful. We will definitely make the drive from College Station to come here. They even recommended a great restaurant down here for lunch! read more
