It's not closest to any of our houses anymore but it was closest to my Grandad's and we go here for any and every family occasion. We even have our own table. It's a great little place serving really good food at a good price. I'm talking pub food but very good pub food. My Grandad used to have the gammon everytime and everytime he would always finish it and always tell us how good it was. Quiz night on a Monday is worth popping down to and live sport is also shown there so it's hugely popular on match days. My favourite pub.

Thought I'd better update this. I've been drinking in the…read moreMoss Vale for over 10 years, currently it's being missmanaged (it's been on the slippery slope for about 4-5 years now) The beer is very overpriced (the dearest pub in the area, nights out on deansgate cost less!) the pub is so understaffed that I have often seen customers walk out without being served (Kym Marsh was in last week and she left after 10 minutes without having been served at an almost empty bar!) The locals (myself included) just tollerate this as we are all set in our ways. It's not the fault of the staff who are all good at their jobs and usually try their best to be efficient. For some reason there is rarely more than 1 member of staff behind the bar and that person has to serve drinks, take food orders and serve food to tables. This often leaves the bar unattended which is frustrating when you are waiting for a drink. The food has deteriorated to such a point where the staff won't eat there (even though the food to them is free, they would rather pay for a chippy meal) and it is unusual for someone to eat a meal and not complain. The toilets are disgusting, It seems that recently someone has reduced the number of times the urinals flush (in an effort to save water?) which has ended up making the toilets stink. The cleaning rota has taken a dive recently, to the point where the tables are sticky, the carpets in some areas are thick with rotten food and beer slops. There has been a steady flow of landlords/landladys over the past few years, each of which have tried to improve the pub, but they are all replaced by the owner when he decides he needs to save some money, with new management always comes a cut in investment (and now the basics of hygene are being cut) If you've never been it might be worth a visit, it's a brilliant lesson in how to ruin what could be a great pub but if you want a drink and a nice meal then I'd give it a miss. I'll still go 4 times a week though. :-(

On a recent trip to Manchester, my lovely wife, our daughter and I were staying with a group of…read morefriends at a hotel on Worsley Brow and checking out the dining options within walking distance. Given its proximity to our hotel, we popped into The John Gilbert several times during our stay, wanting to avoid dodging the traffic speeding by if we tried to venture down towards the Worsley Court House. The pub itself was clean, nicely decorated and seating was comfortable. The side dining rooms have three-quarter windows offering nice views of the lush wooded surroundings. On our first visit, a quick scan of the cocktail list featured my favorite Negroni as a classic, even though the bartender needed to look up the recipe. It was a fine version with Tanqueray rather than my usual Hendrick's. On subsequent visits, I switched to G&T since they feature Fever Tree tonic. Of course, the fish and chips were a must for our first pub meal in Manchester, though the Sunday Roast looked and smelled wonderful, along with a prime steak burger for our daughter. The fish was very good and the chips, which we typically do not eat very often at home, were hot and tasty with plenty of Sarson's malt vinegar to shake on top. Our daughter enjoyed her burger with rosemary fries, and that juicy burger is something I would later wish I had at another restaurant in Manchester City center. Over the course of several more visits, we tried the Potted Ham Hock (yummy, but not enough sourdough bread), a Grilled Cheese and Ham Hock Toastie (for late night munchies), The Hunter's Chicken (very satisfying), and the Seafood Grill (excellent fish, the smoked hollandaise was very good, but the prawns were overcooked for my taste). The wait staff on most of our visits were friendly, speedy and accommodating. They got to know me and my fedora as I bellied up, so after a few visits, I could ask for "our usuals". The only wrinkle was that we did have one of our meals during the evening on the Bank Holiday, and the pub was packed and could have used at least two more staff. We're glad that The John Gilbert was our local during our week's stay.

The weather was nice and since the current covid rules allow for pubs to be open and provide food and drink outside we went for it. We were greeted warmly and it was explained that we had to download the app for table service and we could sit anywhere we liked. The outside was huge offering plenty of space to sit although tables were reserved from 2pm onwards. The menu had a good eclectic selection for drink and as for food offered the usual falafel, meatballs, nachos etc. We weren't massively hungry just nibblish so we shared a buttermilk chicken and haloumi platter for £13 and Latina fries for £4.50 which consisted of a topping of nachos cheese, salsa , guacamole and soir cream. To wash this down with I chose a gin cocktail consisting of prosecco, gin and lemonade..it was really tasty! The presentation was lovely and everything tasted great although I suspected the chips were from frozen. However I did feel that everything was a bit overpriced..there was x3 pieces of chicken and cheese on the sharing platter and everything came to £36 . Despite this we enjoyed the experience and all the staff were lovely. Probably wouldn't rush back for the food.

It's cleaner, the staff are much more friendly and the service generally faster. The tables at the Barton arms were all dirty and nothing was cleared away promptly. He complained it was really dry and a bit tasteless. So all in all not very impressive. We also ordered a Sunday to share but it didn't have half the ingredients on the menu, so was basically just ice cream and brownies.

The decor looks fresh, new, chic, understated and has that grey wood varnish touch that seems to be quite in at the moment. It's a bar but also a restaurant although it still has that pub feel but the new era pub feel. We went for the food and the cocktails - on a Friday night! This is the real time to test a new eatery. They did surprisingly well. We didn't wait for ages, had fun with the cocktails and discussing the place. Cute little notes were hung from table decorations and writing on the walls. Selection: Starting sharer platter - Italian meats, rocket, olives, mozzarella Soup and chips Random I know, but it worked. All of the food was tasty and fresh. Even through the renovation, it still attracts a lot of the old crowd. We were sat next to some people who didn't stop saying the F word through our latter part of the meal. This didn't put me off the food and the experience we'd had so far and I think it genuinely deserves 4*'s.

I called here looking for something to eat at the Trafford Centre, it was a longer walk than made out to be to the point I'd even express my shock it is classed as part of the large shopping mall. The overall feel of this place was slightly old and mainly kid centered, it wasn't really a place you'd want to go for a meal for a more relaxing experience, without kids. The staff seemed nice enough, but the training just wasn't there, it felt like my 'server' was talking to the manager being trained, then passing it onto me, in a relay so bad, even Hong Kong would have beaten it (Hong Kong as I recall come last at the Relay at Olympics 2012) The allergy information was a mess, it was in a giant, heavy folder and seemed really confusing and had limited selection. The cheapness of the food was stressed in advertising around the store which talked about how cheap it was, rather than the overall quality which I didn't like. From awkward location to awkward service and an awful experience for people with allergies and a poor overall feel, I sadly feel The Coach House deserves a one-star rating.

After a few colleagues and I had spent the day volunteering on an urban farm in Eccles, we needed some grub and a drink to replenish our faltering reserves. I was sold on its whimsical name, not realising at the time its association with the company which owns over 1,000 outlets. A very large pub attached to Chill Factore, it was warm, well lit and rather pleasant inside. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They were suffering from IT issues when we were there but the manager told us that you'd soon be able to use Apple Pay here (where you hold your iPhone near the contactless reader). Hark! They're at the cutting edge - to order and pay for your wares without ever leaving your seat. A couch potato's dream. Beer selection was ok too - Sharp's Doom Bar and Devils Backbone both went down a treat.

There's nothing to really distinguish it as a pub, it could be just any unit at a shopping centre. If half the floor space was devoted to selling CDs or winter jackets, I wouldn't have been too surprised. The pub itself has the atmosphere of a space station airlock. No music, a few people drifting about, a sort of silence that made you wonder if you'd stumbled into a very poorly attended funeral. The staff at least were nice, and the food and drink cheap. Czech mate. I used to come to this bar on Mondays to take advantage of the £5 pitcher offers they had on. Unlike many student pubs, Czech Bar uses decent alcohol for its cheapo pitchers and cocktails. I don't understand why there is a constant 2 for 1 offer on cocktails, but I'm not complaining. The beer is good value - you'd pay at least an extra pound a pint for a Staropramen at any city centre bar. On a weeknight there tend to be a few locals playing pool and a few Czechs at the bar, leaving most of the comfy sofas and booths available making it a really good place to meet a group of friends for a quiet drink or to start a night out. Last time I went in there one of the guys behind the bar locked us in when it got to 11pm. He told us there had been a few attempted armed robberies at closing time lately, which is a shame.
