I doubt whether Alfie B. has actually spoken to any of the staff here - this bar is run by Czechs,…read moreit is mainly staffed by Czechs and Slovaks, the beer is Czech, Czech bands play there, they run Czech nights and they show Czech ice hockey matches. I don't think it is trying to tap into any British trend whatsoever - it is simply a bar designed to appeal to the local Czech and Slovak communities as well as locals and students. Rant over. Czech mate. I used to come to this bar on Mondays to take advantage of the £5 pitcher offers they had on. Unlike many student pubs, Czech Bar uses decent alcohol for its cheapo pitchers and cocktails. I don't understand why there is a constant 2 for 1 offer on cocktails, but I'm not complaining. The beer is good value - you'd pay at least an extra pound a pint for a Staropramen at any city centre bar. On a weeknight there tend to be a few locals playing pool and a few Czechs at the bar, leaving most of the comfy sofas and booths available making it a really good place to meet a group of friends for a quiet drink or to start a night out. Last time I went in there one of the guys behind the bar locked us in when it got to 11pm. He told us there had been a few attempted armed robberies at closing time lately, which is a shame. If this place opened up on the Oxford Road (perhaps in place of Scu Bar) it would be less likely to suffer from this problem and more likely to attract passing trade which would make weeknights a bit livelier. But I like it just the way it is.

True, they do bother to import a couple of Czech beers that are okay. But the reason Staropramen, Pilsner Urquell and Budvar are famous and available everywhere these days, is because they're the nicest ones, so they've been imported (they're also the most popular in the Czech Republic). Other than a few average and rightly unknown beers, its absolute woe in there. Here's an ode to it: Czech Bar, They've brought the beer from afar, Which is a little bizarre, Because none of its nicer than Star. When I order steak, I always ask for it blue or as rare as the chef is happy to cook it. I rarely get it blue. So far the only places I've eaten that are happy to cook it that way are The Grill on The Alley and The Grill on New York Street. Until last night..... The White Horse is our local pub, just five minutes walk down the road and my other half and I have been in a couple of times since its refurb for a couple of drinks. Its a lovely homely pub with alcoves off and although open plan it feels like an old country local. Yes the decor and furniture is all new but it doesn't feel sterile and lacking personality like some do when they've been done up. Its a really lovely atmosphere in there. There was a football match being played on the various TV screens and a quiz after the football so it was understandably busy for a Tuesday night. For me that just added to the atmosphere. My better half likes it as it serves cask real ales, some from local breweries too, a nice selection with little samples on each pump so you can see the colour and clarity of each ale. A nice touch. The menu itself is lovely, from classics like cod and chips to orzo pasta salad and sharer plates. I fancied rump steak and my fella had Hunters chicken. Despite how busy the place was it didn't take long for the food to arrive. The steak I had was a lovely thick piece that I was surprised to see had been cooked blue to perfection. Melt in the mouth, tasty and juicy. In fact my tastebuds are tingling now just thinking about it! The hunters chicken looked and smelled good too, and was very good according to him indoors! We also had a pud each, millionaires cheesecake and profiteroles which were both absolutely divine. Profiteroles were coated in chocolate and filled with hazelnut cream, a nice twist on a classic dessert. All in all a really beautiful meal, the quality of the food is excellent, the prices reasonable, and the staff are friendly and gave exceptional service, especially given how busy it was. I'm pretty sure we'll be eating there more often, it really is a gem of a place.

I assure you that just because this historical farm is a local, convenient pub - I'm not biassed…read more There are many other pubs in walking distance too. I'm a Guinness and/or lager drinker myself (with the odd Jack Daniels or Jaegerbomb) but I'm always intrigued to the different guest ales 'The Farm' has on offer every week. From Ginger Beard to Dirty Blonde, they always offer something different and tasty. Landlord Dave is especially keen on the ales and has a jar himself from time to time at the end of the bar. But it's not just the beverages on offer that makes for a pleasant visit to a pub. For me, it's the layout of the pub. Not in an aesthetic sense but a practical or feng sui way. I'm not keen on establishments where the bar is cornered off or separate to the social space. In the Moorside Farm the bar is wrapped around the whole bright table/ seating area - which makes for a great social space. One end of the bar is the dart board (very dart friendly) and the other end is the toilets. Being a regular, you tend to find yourself making your way down the length of the bar (doing your rounds so to speak) letting on to people. Not to mention the lovely beer garden that seats easily 60 people. There's a DJ with a great sense of humour on a Friday night. Equipped with karaoke gear and silly blow up toys and luminous wigs. Quite cheesy actually. But cheesy is good sometimes, especially when you want a down-to-earth night with your mates. The Farm serves food, from a diverse menu. I typically start with the soup of the day which is usually tomato & basil. My favourite main is the Ranch Burger. It's a decent sized beef burger served with BBQ sauce, salad and chips. Simple food but very tasty. It's freshly made by the good chefs of the Farm. I finish with the yummy chocolate indulgence sundae. Which as sundae's go is pretty poor to be honest but I love ice-cream so I don't generally care. Call it beer goggle desert. Landlords Dave & Lynne are welcoming-ish characters with a very dry sense of humour. People tend to have a banter with them - which usually consists of "oh no it's that ginger idiot again!" but it's all in good fun - I reply with "shut it you southern fairy!" Dave & Lynne seem to get a little upset with you using plastic, especially when you use it every two pints. So, I usually open a tab and just use it once before I leave (if I don't get too drunk and forget!) The pub could really do with some sort of special offer or promotion. A happy hour or license to Sky for the football wouldn't go a miss. My friends and I spend many a night trying to come up with the most elaborate ideas to boost traffic in the pub

Stocked with the standard but also bringing in some guest ales. The place seaves food, with again is standard pub food. While it is OK and will fill a need it wasn't anything to rave about. The best thing about this pub was the lady running it, my herself it seemed as well. She was a great host a sever and although she was clearly busy (pub wasn't quite that night) she will made time to chat to the locals and us newbies.

Yes there's Lime Bar near the Lowry Mall, but that's more for grabbing a drink before you eat there. When Dock Bar first opened, the novelty of it consisting of four shipping containers (one as a bar, the other three as a roomy lounge) had me worried it was just going to be a flash in the pan. The fact it's still there and thriving (I'm hoping!) means it'll thankfully remain as a permanent 'temporary' bar for us local beer lovers. FYI the Chocolate Marble beer from Marble Brewery in Manchester is a particular favourite of my drinking buddy and I - buy it!. I think MediaCity UK missed a trick not having included a few more drinking holes in their masterplan, to keep staff local when they sign off for an evening, but if Dock Bar is all there will be for the foreseeable future, we're not that badly off in my humble opinion.

Dock Bar is a great little addition to Mediacity, much needed too!…read more It's right in the centre of the piazza surrounded by the BBC buildings, there's a big screen (great for watching Wimbledon last week), they have deck chairs for sitting outside in the sun, a cosy lounge inside of a shipping container (doesn't sound too cosy does it? But it is) and they serve food, BBQ style similar to Oast House (no hanging kebabs as yet :-( ). There's also a homemade ice cream place there too which I keep meaning to try. It's a great location for anyone visiting the quays but they also have a great entertainment programme going on over at Mediacity too, last week Gok Wan was filming his 'Stripping for Summer' show there, each week they have screenings from the Royal Opera House on the big screen...add them on facebook to keep up with what's happening, last week they had a little tennis camp going on too teaching people to play. Drinks and food prices are moderate, there's not much competition around there so it's not expensive really, the tram drops you off right there and runs pretty late so it's easily accessible and it's also a good place for some celebrity spotting if you're into that.
