I had the chicken with thyme with butternut squash and carmelized onions. The chicken (leg) was perfectly seasoned with lovely roasted butternut squash and carmelized onions. Everyone in my party enjoyed their meal, and the size of the portion of fish with the fish and chips was massive. Great service and ambience. Highly recommend!

We stayed in the Wey room (room #1) which was small, but very lovely. The bed was super comfortable and covered in loads of pillows. We were provided with plenty of towels, a bathrobe and slippers. The hot drink selection was great with a variety of teas and some instant hot chocolate that was actually really nice! Free Wifi was available which is always a plus. The bathroom is pretty tiny, but nothing too unmanageable. Everything was new, clean and modern. Our hairdryer only worked for 1 minute bursts and then seemed to overheat. My partner said she could hear a bit of music from the pub below, but I couldn't hear it at all. In any case, they closed by midnight on a Saturday night which isn't at all unreasonable. We tried two cocktails. The bartender lady made one that was completely different than what we asked for, but was still quite nice. We both loved a passionfruit cocktail! The next morning we went downstairs for breakfast. There was a small amount of cold cereal and fruit on a spread, and a full and varied menu for hot food. I have celiac disease and had enquired about the dinner at the Swan before I knew that my girlfriend had booked it as our accommodation, and they were one of the only restaurants of the 10 I emailed in Arundel who responded to my request for gluten free menu items. While we did not end up having dinner here, the helpfulness continued into breakfast. Our server was very lovely and communicated with the kitchen to provide me with a gluten free fry up. They substituted sausage for more bacon, which is always appreciated! And they even had gluten free toast. I had a lovely meal! Overall, I loved the Swan Hotel. It's perhaps a bit pricey considering how small our room was, but I also understand that for a nice, boutique hotel in the middle of a touristy town, that it was probably market value. I would definitely return and recommend it to friends!

The Old Railway Station - Upper Room

The Old Railway Station

The Old Railway Station is a bed and breakfast hotel that also does afternoon teas…read more The railway line at Petworth closed in the 1960s, and the building quickly became derelict. It was fully restored at the end of the 20th century, and is listed as an historical building of interest, as an unusual example of a classic station design executed entirely in wood. Two of the bedrooms are located within the main building, and are more spacious. However, most people opt to stay in one of the old Pullman carriages, which are parked alongside the old platforms. These provide a unique accommodation experience. We stayed in the upper station room, accessed by a spiral staircase, which was both very spacious and very well appointed. The en-suite bathroom has a large walk-in shower, and plenty of space to put wash bags etc (joy). The bed can be configured as two single beds or a very large double, and was very comfortable. The bedlinen was also very good quality (great pillows). The room was spotlessly clean. Light sleepers might find the noise from the adjacent road a little irritating first thing in the morning, but it did not bother us. We paid £150 per night B&B for two. Check in (in the old ticket office) is limited normally to the mid afternoon/early evening, but there is a caretaker member of staff on site during through the night. Check-out is by 11am on the day of departure. It can be a little tricky to find, particularly if it is dark: the access road runs from the end of the adjacent Badgers pub, on the A285 two miles south of Petworth, but there are no street lamps. There is parking on gravel in front of the hotel. A nice touch was the key-ring with a powerful torch on it, which made walking to the adjacent pub for an evening meal straightforward. Breakfast (and afternoon tea) is served in the former waiting room, which has been lovingly restored and is very impressive. It is decorated with prints of trains and the station in earlier times, as well as items of railway memorabilia. We chose the full English breakfast (one vegetarian, one standard) which was excellent. You are asked to provide your choice is the day before, and your choice of breakfast slot: everything is then prepared freshly to order. This included cereals, fruit, fresh orange juice, toast, croissant and preserves, and the cooked breakfasts itself. In the summer, you can enjoy tea on the platform. This area of the former trackbed has been turned into a lush garden. At night, the absence of artificial light means that, if you get clear skies, you get an excellent view of the night sky - great for stargazing. Staff were extremely welcoming and friendly throughout. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We would happily recommend it.

London is an amazing city but every once in a while you need a reprieve from it's frenzied…read moreactivity, which can sometimes leave you fried and rattled. So, you get the idea of where I was coming from when I booked myself into a spa break at Lythe Hill. Now this isn't really my thing. Some beauty pampering can just seem like a waste of money to me and sometimes I just don't have the patience to sit still and endure a treatment. But I was in desperate need of some relaxation, so I gave it a try. Lythe Hill Hotel is just outside Haslemere, which is a short train journey from London. Take the briefest of tax journeys and you arrive at a number of small, lovely buildings set in amidst the trees and rolling hills of the Surrey countryside. ...Yes, you read me right, "buildings". So, this is not your typical hotel. An old Tudor house faces the road and this is where the restaurant and bar are located. The reception is a little further down driveway and to the right Ask for a password to access Internet, although it is quite a slow connection. ...You can also get there by helicopter, they have a helipad on the premises too! My building was down a little pathway to the left, next to a green by a "lake" - it's really more of a large pond, but very serene and relaxing. I loved it! My room was HUGE! I couldn't believe my luck! The bathroom was just as big too. I really don't think my pictures did the place justice. Decorated in neutral tones with painted wood panelling. I booked the place on special offer and really got value for money. Enter the front of the Tudor house and through a small narrow hallway you come to the bar which is in the modern extension of the building. It's small but adequate and overlooks the green and the "lake". The restaurant is split between 2 rooms. 1 is in the old building with dark wood panelling, the other is in the modern extension, again decorated in neutral tones. The waiting staff were excellent, friendly, charming and accommodating. The food was great too, although their weren't quite as good and their savory dishes. There's a decent selection of wines and the Maitre d' is happy to offer recommendations. The beauty spa is in a modern building further down from the Tudor house with a swmming pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, etc... The beauticians were young, diminutive and very pleasant. I have to admit some of the treatments I thought a waste of time but the Body Ritual was well worth it and achieved exactly what I wanted. De-stressed and untensed, I was reluctant to go back to London.

This is like a step back in time but with all the comforts of modern day luxury. We stayed one night in a deluxe suite which was HUGE, and had the best ensuite bathroom I have ever seen. Not even the Cafe Royal in London comes close. That night we had drinks in the garden courtyard, followed by the most exquisite meal we have ever had. We LOVE our food - but this was a gastronomical experience we will never forget. It is a degustation - you will feel like you have to be rolled out of there. The portions are small but there are more than 10 courses, each one getting progressively better and more beautiful. It's expensive - save it for a special occasion. The chef is a master. Also if you get a chance, the little tea room in the village is PERFECTION. We had afternoon tea there with scones, home made strawberry jam and clotted cream. Go for a walk to wear the food coma off. The grounds are like something out of a picture book. There's a terrace on the outside of the wall for sunset viewing. If I could afford it, I would get married here. At least dreams are free.
