What a fantastic pub/restaurant nestling on the riverbank in Arundel. Just along from the castle…read more Sitting outside was relaxing prior to our booked table in the restaurant. The ambience spread over to the clientele as it was reasonably quiet. Unlike many pubs where people seemed to need to shout to speak to each other. After a drink we were guided to a table in the restaurant. Lovely young lady that would serve us this evening. The menu was interesting with a good selection of dishes but, noticeably, normal Pub Grub with a twist. We stuck to the normal fish and chips. Wonderfully cooked fish with a beautiful tartar sauce. The chips, triple fried. Brilliant. Service was second to none. That young lady was there before we needed to ask. Like she was in your head anticipating your requests. Price was more than reasonable. Looking forward to visiting our friends in Arundel again and another visit to this gem on the river.

What elevates this restaurant above all that is the location. Outside wooden bench seating is right on the river Arun with a clear view to Arundel castle one direction, all the way down a scenic view on the river. I was lucky to be there on a beautiful warm September late afternoon and you couldn't ask for a more perfect setting. I ordered a pint of cider and their fish and chips. The fish was perfectly battered, light and flaky and delicious. It came with mushy or whole peas (I opted for the latter) and regular chips. Tartar sauce, ketchup and soured cream (for the peas presumably?) were provided. My only critique is no vinegar which I like with this meal, but I'm sure I could have asked.

Arrived on a quiet Saturday night, very early. The pub itself is very nice, not too trendy or too…read moreold style. Perhaps though, you wouldn't expect the quality of food by looking at the outside of the pub. Never has the phrase, "don't judge a book by its cover," been more true. What is generally nice about this place is that they do a few things really well, rather than having huge selections of mediocre tat. This starts with the beer - a choice of four very nice ales, we went for the Dark Star "Hophead" a golden pale ale, which has a lovely full flavour with a hint of honey and elder-flower. The menu here changes often, almost daily, depending on what is available and the chef decides to make. Our starters were ham and apple terrine with a lovely pickle, chicken and liver paté with sourdough bread & homemade chutney, Selsy crab and salmon cakes. All fantastic. Not only did it all taste fantastic but the presentation is worth the price alone. You can see the menu in the photos I've added. For mains I had hanger steak with purple sprouting broccoli - incredible melt in the mouth texture that worked so well with the broccoli and a tasty sauce. Everyone else had fish was being at the coast is a great choice. My youngest daughter had hake in a beer batter which was so, so light and crispy. My wife and eldest daughter had pan fried fish (trout and turbot) with mash. Seriously, I could have eaten all the mains myself - I've not seen my wife finish a meal so quick, ok I kept stealing bits of her plate because it was rather yummy. I couldn't reach my daughters plate so easily. Desserts were equally well presented and equally tasty. The highlight was the chocolate brownie that was rich and gooey it the right proportions. The rummed raisins in my sable biscuit chocolate cake were fantastic. These lovely fruits just kept popping in my mouth. My eldest had the raspberry meringue which thankfully wasn't too sweet, although the meringue was a little harder than I expect it was obviously made in the kitchen as it had a lovely chewy inside rather than being all air. Overall, a brilliant meal. If you were eating this in London you would be paying twice as much as you are here. While you would probably only get half of the meal in London too. This is top quality food with portions you can live on. Go here now before the word gets out.
