The whole place is so beautiful and the grounds are absolutely breathtaking. The staff are in no way snobby at all which makes a huge difference and they were more than happy to keep the bar open late when we returned from our wedding. The cooked beakfast in the morning was extremely well needed and perfectly cooked. Its not the cheapest place to stay but worth every single penny!

I arrived on Sunday morning and was happy to find that my room was ready and I was able to check in straight away. My room was nice and clean, the room was very floral and the facilities were a bit dated, such as the 80's style spa bath and the security box in the wall! But that didn't bother me too much, it all adds to the charm! I did see inside other rooms that were being cleaned and they aren't all so dated and floral! Downstairs you are able to have breakfast/lunch and cream teas and the seats all looks very fancy and comfortable. As it was nice weather during my visit there were also lots of people sitting outside. I didn't sample the breakfast as I needed my sleep more, but I expect it would be lovely. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I did think the room was slightly overpriced (£135pn through hotels.com), but as the location was great for the wedding I was attending I didn't mind so much.

I must say I stumbled upon this restaurant by luck. I had been spending my summer with my boyfriend…read morein his hometown in Wickham (which is why my previous reviews are all in England). We were fortunate enough to come across a livingsocial deal for The Old House. He had heard great things about this restaurant from his family members, so with luck we purchased this voucher and wandered into a top end restaurant having paid fairly little money. Let just say, England's bad food reputation is relatively true if you don't know where to look. There are plenty of small gems like these in little towns, though frankly you might have to pay an arm and a leg for this place. Most people reading this review probably won't even live in England but if you happen to be in the Hampshire area, near Winchester I urge you to try out The Old House Hotel & Restaurant. The setting, if you have good weather like we did, seems like something out of The Great Gatsby (without the infidelity and murder). I am under the assumption this place was once a residential home (hence the name) and been transformed into classy dining experience. The decorum in an American point of view, very old, classy, New England with the Fitzgerald's and the Kennedy's. There is a quiet garden out back with a few picnic tables where you can enjoy some champagne and a smoke and when you're ready to come in you go in. In the end, the real winner of the night was the food. Most of the food I chose was the ones I thought were interesting. I started with a Tuna tartare, with an avocado sorbet, wasabi caviar, and a dark soy reduction. This was my most adventurous choice, and in the end I was mildly disappointed with my choice. It wasn't that the food wasn't good, it was just the combination was too weird for me. I, naively, was under the assumption that the avocado sorbet was going to be something more like a whipped avocado cream but it was actually an avocado flavored ice cream placed on top a bed of tuna tartare. The wasabi caviar was too bitter and really detracted from the natural flavor of the tuna. All in all, I think the right idea was behind on this dish but needed a bit more tweaking. The other hand, the plating was the most beautiful thing Id ever seen. As my main, I chose the Lobster with Crayfish (or Crawfish if you're American) garden pea and lemon risotto with a parmesan crisp and Thermidor Sauce. Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous, everything worked so well together, the lobster was cooked to sweet succulent seafood perfection. The risotto was creamy and with just a hint of the sour lemon taste to help bring out the flavor of the craw(cray)fish. I thought I couldn't eat another bite but then I saw the dessert menu and well... I'm a sucker for the sweets. The dessert, we had the "assiette of Old House desserts for two" which roughly translates to the best way to eat your way to heart disease and diabetes. The plate came with a dark chocolate brownie the length of a brick, summer pudding, toffee creme with a banana bread base, and peanut butter parfait (which is really just peanut butter ice cream). I ate until I thought I was going to burst and then picked more at the plate. The banana bread was served on the opposite side of the toffee delice but were meant to be eaten together and damn, they are the new Mac and Cheese. Barring from the fact, I love brownies I spent most of my time engulfing this amazing dessert. All in all, if you can't tell from my long-winded review, you should probably eat at this place. It's really pricey so don't splurge as much if you don't have the money. Remember I lucked out because I got a voucher but this is definitely one of the best restaurants I've been to in England if not ever. So by all means, if you're here already spend a little, live a little. It's a great restaurant. They do require reservations, It does seem to get a bit busy and make sure you dress for the occasion. 1920's flapper girl dressy but with class of course. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

We really enjoyed our 6 day stay here and we'd give it 6 stars if we could. The hotel is in a…read morereally beautiful setting yet close enough to the motorway system. We had arrived lunchtime and immediately faced a problem as one of our two reservations hadn't been recorded but Brooke and Marco at reception got our room for the entire stay, and said our room was ready so doubly helpful. The booking mess took far too long a time to sort out but eventually it was. We were in the grip of a heatwave throughout our stay and while the main part of the hotel has air conditioning the rooms don't, so it wasn't a comfortable sleep on any night. But that's not any fault of the hotel - they did provide in - room fans which served only to circulate hot air and increase electricity bills. The room was fine, bed comfy, good quality toilet tissue, towels were great size and fluffy. We had in - room tea/coffee and the usual tv, hairdryer etc. For reasons unknown, room service missed refreshing our room on two separate days but we didn't mention it. Breakfast was great with the full English - and the bacon and sausage offerings were among the best I've seen in any UK/Irish hotel so fair play to them not serving rubbish - and my preferred continental choices included great meats but sadly not great croissants. The machine-dispensed coffees (most coffees are machine made even espresso) were darn good for what they were. The dining place was hectic busy at every breakfast with staff, machines (and management) not fully coping with demand but at the price we paid we couldn't reasonably complain as there's only a few grumbles to note and the guests were polite and tolerant folk. The water in the area is poor quality, adversely affecting the taste of tea & coffee and badly staining the cups. The local water authority needs a kick up the derrière - no doubt only profit matters there. I couldn't find a proper coffee espresso machine in the hotel that requires a barista so it was just the push button machines. There's a great market for sophisticated coffee guys. The breakfast pastries - all of them - and guests would benefit from a re start here. They aren't great and the croissants look good but are poor tasting. The general areas in the hotel are a tad worn, it's understandable but the hotel was very clean - the wear added to its charm. The spa was glorious. The steam room and jacuzzi were ace. All in all we would return in a heart beat. The hotel was busy, lively and we had a blast - we loved it. Despite staff working very hard they each had time to be pleasant and ever welcoming throughout our stay - now ya can't manufacture that.

They have a gym and a nice pool with jacuzzi sauna and steam room. There is lots of food! I love the food at this place, they do good cooked breakfast with very smart waiters and again, great fun to hang out with when you are stuck at a hotel for a period of time. The TV got knocked out once, annoying but it is an old place, and I was staying in the bit they were about to sell. The living room is so cool! They have Tennyson and other famous Brits all on the walls and nice furnishings and carpet. WIFI! I debated giving this four stars because the decor in my room was horrific - yellow wallpaper and low hung ceiling supports, plus a bit of weird mold in the shower. However, I did stay for one night in the other end of the hotel, and that was great, clean and even had windows (they were tiny in my room unfortunately). Since I know they are getting rid of that bit and no one else will likely have to stay in it for too much longer I give this place five stars. It's a lot of fun and extremely accommodating.

There is a large reception and lounge which always appeared busy. One can only assume they are putting the bar to good use. Bravo. The got the plaza room which featured a lounge/business section behind the actual bedroom area. The room was quite lovely though lacked good lighting in this annex which made working at the desk slightly challenging. The breakfast is a complimentary buffet (the best kind of buffet) and the selection is comparable to average Marriott spreads. The gym is humble but has a few machines and weights which will fulfill the light-work-out-seeking gym-goer. Also there is a huge Sainsbury about a 6 minute walk away for your everyday needs/supplies. The whole place has a very laid back attitude, helpful when asked and hands-off otherwise. The price was extremely good and the only things I have to say which are even the least bit negative is that it is a bit in the middle of nowhere and it is a bit mazy as you may have to walk quite a bit around the perimeter if your room is the center back of the building.
