Afternoon tea
Darlene M.

Wonderful, charming hotel very convenient for the cruise line out of Southampton. Staff is excellent and if you have time, definitely get the afternoon tea. It was wonderful. Room was spacious. Only complaint was the high bathtub side stepping in and out of the shower- seems typical in UK . Bed was comfortable. Hotel is well situated to walk around old town before leaving on your cruise.

Breakfast
George R.

We stayed one night twice, over 17 days, earlier this month at this edge of city place. We arrived and left by taxi as it's a city that really is determined not to encourage cars/parking. Its council sure ain't visitor friendly. Drivers who park in this ugly, drab city centre are being robbed blind. All the hotel staff we encountered were ace over and over. We enjoyed both stays, with the 11th floor room much better than the 4th floor room. The latter was cold (we got a heater from reception) it was a bit grubby, basic and a bit worn out but entirely functional. The prices were pretty fair so my five star review is based on price paid both nights and deserved. The breakfasts on both days were really very good indeed and I hit a first - English crumpets in the bread basket - so I had to have one well toasted with butter. It was real tasty. Only one mind. I needed a few things done in both visits being particularly demanding on 2nd stay and both reception and bar staff met all my pushy needs and they came up trumps every time. I was really impressed. We hope we will stay here again and we'll be looking forward to it and if I do I will ferret out the bread basket for more crumpets. Might even try two next time. Highly recommend this value for money place.

Cigarette butts and gum

Well over 400 quid a night for a view! We expect a lot for that price. Let's start with the room... As we walked in we took a look out the window and the ledge was covered in cigarette butts and chewing gum. The refrigerator does not work. AC does not work. Had to sleep with windows open and listen to traffic. TV was poorly programmed and connected. Was unable to use it for anything but over the air channels. The sink was clogged. There are no extra pillows, sheets, or blankets. We did not ask for pillows but a person banged on the door at a late hour to ask if we ordered some. Then the next day housekeeping came before checkout banging on the door The toilet door does not lock. The towels were apparently put on a level for someone who is incredibly short. The lobby looks nice but the bathrooms smell to high heaven. Mentioned to lobby staff and they seemed apologetic but definitely did not seem inclined to want to make it better. Leo, the main restaurant. Served a horrible fish with chips. The service was abysmal with staff members giggling, goofing, and hanging out. Our soup arrived cold for one example. 400 quid a night is like a Ritz Carlton. Highly advise something different. Not worth the price AT ALL In summary, this appears to be a play for the captive audience of people going on cruises.

Hotel in Southhampton port, April 2024.

Far from good. Good from afar. Only plus is it's near the port. Most expensive drinks we had on our vacation. Stay elsewhere if availablity

Both sides of the street are lined with small restaurants and bars. Dining is outside or inside. The pub at the White Star offers a good selection of drinks and a nice menu. The rooms vary by size and occupy the 3 floors above the pub/restaurant. All are accessed by a staircase, if you have large bags, they can store them for you. Our rooms have always been very nicely furnished an immaculately clean. There's a coffee maker, and water boiler, tea, sugar etc as well. Air conditioning is adequate, the water pressure is good and the towels big and fluffy. The staff are welcoming and attentive.

The inn feels like an old ocean liner from the early 1900s without the opulence found later. Some of the rooms are named after former ocean liners, and thus named the White Star now for England's most famous line, owners of the Titanic and many others, now called Cunard. We had a delightful dinner. It has a pub atmosphere but a bit more upscale as a restaurant or tavern. To celebrate we got a bottle of the sparkling wine from Kent. It was quite good and went well with the meal I ordered a pheasant croquette on a bed of peas and Brussels sprouts. It was excellent My main was the chicken dish which was very well prepared and delicious. The sauce was good and the preparation better than expected for this type of establishment. The portions are substantial and I was quite full and unable to have a dessert. The waitstaff are cordial and really hustle when the crowd appears. A bit on the pricier end, especially with the wine selection, but the quality is good.

The hotel suggested we take a cab but we managed to pull our 24 inch luggage from the hotel. We cut through the Holiday Inn parking lot. I wouldn't recommend you walking unless you're very mobile. It took us under 15 minutes. We enjoyed the hotel. Very upbeat. We noticed a photo booth on the mezzanine and table tennis. We had a choice of 500 points or food credit $10 per person. I took the food credit as we were going to eat before leaving for the terminal the next morning. Spent about another $12 USD out of pocket. Standard breakfast food options. We also had hotel bar food for dinner the day we checked in after the two fish and chip places suggested by the hotel didn't work out. Ordered: * hubby had chicken wings * I had Mac n cheese balls * BIL had chicken curry * sis had egg rolls We each were given a free cocktail voucher. It was like a fruit punch. Also got local beer. There's a shopping center across the street. It was a Sunday so stores closed early.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for one night before we embarked on a cruise. We paid 285 pounds for the night in a standard-double room. Our international flight landed in the morning. Many weeks earlier, the hotel's concierge had helped us to hire a chauffeur from a different business to drive us from the airport to the hotel. That concierge left his job, so unfortunately for several weeks, I received no responses to my emails. The chauffeur and I communicated, and he picked us up from the airport and drove us to the hotel. The hotel building had beautiful architecture that resembled the shape of a yacht. My husband and I arrived at the hotel at 9 AM, but checkin was at 3 PM. The front desk stored our suitcases while we waited several hours for a room to become available. To kill time, we visited many businesses around the town, and we ate lunch in the hotel's HarBAR on 6th restaurant, which I reviewed separately. Many other customers got rooms ahead of us. We got our room at 2:12 PM. The room was clean and stylish and was in very good condition. The bed was comfortable, and the water had a very good temperature and pressure. I appreciated that a shower cap was in the bathroom. The shampoo and conditioner worked fairly well to clean and moisturize my hair. The television was a bit small. Checkout in the morning was easy. The new concierge was fantastic. He spoke very nicely with us, stapled our cruise tags onto our suitcases, and even remembered my husband's name. He also drove us to the nearby cruise port on time.

Accessible entrance and lifts are in the lobby. Stairs were also easy to find and use. It is clean, bright, and has a relaxed ocean vibe. Our room overlooked the harbor, we could see the Queen Mary 2, and it was quiet. There were binoculars in the room that were fun to use! We were on the 5th floor so during the day and evening we could hear the chairs and furniture scraping the floor in the rooftop bar (on the 6th floor). Not terrible, but next time I'd prefer not to be on the fifth floor. The bed was comfortable but oddly the comforter barely fit the bed - we had to sleep in the center of the bed because the comforter was not wide enough to reach beyond the edge of the bed when we weren't in it. There cannot be an outlet in the bathroom by law, so using the hair dryer was also a challenge. There is a big full length mirror near the bathroom, but no outlet nearby and the hairdryer cord was not long enough. Fortunately there was a nice makeup mirror in the bathroom I was able to move and could prop up on the tissue box on the desk to see my hair while I dried it. Keeping the makeup mirror on the desk (where there is natural light) is a good idea because the lighting in the bathroom is terrible. Loved the chairs and colors in the room. Plenty of closet space and drawers. There is also a snack closet - look for the price list! We ate at the rooftop bar twice. When we arrived in the afternoon we had drinks and a pizza - both great! Jon was wonderful & helpful! We came back for breakfast the next morning. The buffet was perfect for me - the overnight oats were delicious as was the yogurt (very tangy) and fresh fruit. Hubby had some buffet items and eggs Benedict which he enjoyed. We would definitely stay here and dine here again!

Many of the locals stop by for breakfast. The adjoining bar next door was a nice place for an evening night cap and the locals gathered there to talk as familiar soft rock tunes like Journey played I the background. We walked up several quaint steps down a narrow hall to our room. Our room was clean however throughout the night there was a turbulent thunder and lightning storm. I had to get up and close each one of the four windows that rolled outward and inward to shut and one window in the bathroom would not close. The staff was friendly and assisted us as we scheduled a cab for our next destination. Four stars because the wifi was not strong or consistent. Worth the money for the experience of history of quaint town of South Hampton, but don't expect the Hilton.

When I booked the cruise I decided to splurge and upgrade to a Queens Grill suite. The suite itself was very nice. My butler was...adequate. He did what I asked of him but his service was indifferent. Maybe he'd been on the ship for a while and was fatigued, maybe he has other personal stuff going on...I get it. I just felt he didn't go the extra mile, as so many advertisements claim they would. The food was okay, nothing spectacular. I've had better at high-end restaurants. The disembarkation process was a mess. I asked several crew members what the process is (I have disabilities and occasionally need extra help), and none of them could give me a clear answer. One actually said "I don't know, we'll figure it out tomorrow." I don't know about you, but when I'm paying $12k+ for a cruise and I ask questions they don't have answers to I want someone to respond "I'm not sure, but let me find an answer for you" instead of "We'll figure it out tomorrow." The excursions and ports were amazing, but overall the service I received lacked the polish and excellence the Cunard name is known for. I might go on another cruise, but it won't be with Cunard.

Queen Mary 2 sailing out of New York to Southampton, UK and back in June 2025 was a complete and…read moretotal abysmal disappointment from start to finish. Cunard is the epitome of fake luxury. Recently, QM2 even got the lowest rating for an operating ship in the entire cruise industry (an 87, where 86 is the bare minimum to remain operational), and I for one am not at all surprised after sailing with them. The service from cruise ship port to cabin stewards, to dining staff and more was incredibly inconsistent. Some staff members had clearly worked in high end luxury hotels around the globe, while others had never worked in hospitality before at all and it definitely showed. Our room was located right next to an outside children's play area and directly across from "The Zone" which turned out to be the children's nursery, preteen and teen lounge. Which means, that for our 18 day trip, despite requesting 3 different times to be moved to a different cabin, we were constantly bombarded with noise day and night. Of course children are going to play and keep noise, but on a ship like this, which clearly wasn't designed to host young children, and Cunard even discourages bringing them, people clearly ignored that advice, obviously we didn't want to be stuck with the constant disturbance for our entire long holiday. It's why every other cruise line knows not to put a children's location this close to customer staterooms! Which meant that from starting around 6 AM until about 11 PM every day for nearly 3 weeks, we had kids running, jumping, playing, screaming and tantruming in the hallway outside of our definitely not soundproofed door nearly all day. For a still unexplained reason, we also got into Rotterdam nearly a full day late, which totally threw off my travel plans around Europe. Due to this, the Dutch port authority would not allow us to leave the country until we went through their immigration process, despite not meeting the vessel at the time we got into port. Due to all of this mismanagement, not only did we miss our scheduled train out of Amsterdam, we also later missed our morning scheduled flight out as well. The ship isn't being well maintained or cleaned overall either, with plenty of areas containing stains, mold and mildew and dirty dishes that were supposed to be "clean." The food was pretty good, but very monotonous for a longer trip, with essentially the same dining options served each day. There were also lots of issues with staff that didn't speak English well enough to be serving food, especially not when dealing with food allergies. I had a number of items with specified food allergens brought to my party when dining, even after giving the serving staff written lists of everyone's food allergies. Yet because the service staff didn't have a solid command of either written or spoken English, they couldn't answer questions about what specific ingredients food contained, or figure out how to not bring us foods that contained our allergens. Likewise, the buffet had a lot of cross contamination of various types of food because people weren't paying attention, or thought it was no big deal to use a different set of tongs for various foods. They did not stick to posted food schedules either. If they ran out of a particular food, they simply didn't make more. Or even closed food stations early so they didn't have to make additional food and stay open as per their posted schedules. A lot of the experience onboard felt very nickel and dimey. They would offer a service for "The entire voyage" only to later state that the service period wasn't for the entire length of our cruise as the customers, but what they considered as each individual trip. So during the 18 days we were onboard, they considered it to be 3 separate trips! There were also lots of times their staff was rude or unprofessional, like when I was trying to discuss with the purser's office what my options were for getting off in Rotterdam after Cunard got us into port so late. Yet instead of being a professional and going to get a supervisor, as another lady did when I dealt with a grownup later on for handling the matter, the man at the purser's office was incredibly rude, nasty, insulting and unprofessional the night we got into Rotterdam. Grow up! And go get a different job if you don't want to deal with customer service! Their staff was also incredibly unhelpful with lots of missing instructions in the weeks and months prior to us boarding. I truly regret taking this cruise and definitely don't recommend the Cunard cruise line. They don't give a d*mn about customer comfort and other needs and it showed in everything we experienced in dealing with them.
