He said he's heading up to NorCal later this week, so we're already sad we won't have him next time. He kicked things off with about 30 minutes onshore, rules, safety just learning the basics and getting our balance, then it was straight into the waves. And yes, everyone actually stood up and surfed! The kids thought they knew the ocean from boogie boarding, but this was a whole new level of fun. Lots of wipeouts, tons of laughs, and those "I can't believe I just did that" moments. Eric, the owner, was awesome too, quick with texts, super helpful with any little hiccups, and just made it all easy. Such a fun, unforgettable experience. Swim around to the left and go through (30 sec swim through), there's a breathing room right under the first lip going in. Can't see it from outside but you can hear the air escaping! Great experience, wish I had more energy and time to explore more.

And, unless you're Captain Stubing, Jr. and own your own vessel, then Island Packer Cruises is the official partner of the NPS to transport visitors between the mainland and the island. The Good: * Currently offering services to Anacapa Island, Santa Cruz Island, Santa Rosa Island, and San Miguel Island. * Staff was friendly and helpful based on the minimal interactions we had with them. * Covered and uncovered seating on the boats, but you'll want to bring a hat regardless. * If you're lucky, you'll spot some dolphins and/or whales along the way. * Manage bookings online through their website. * They do send out emails updating you on the weather status and such in case there might be a chance of cancellations. * Prices vary depending on what you want to do, but they range from $15 per person to several hundred per person for 12-hour cruises. The average is probably around $70-100 each, though, which isn't bad for a round trip. * They do have a snack bar complete with beers on tap on the boat, so if you need some extra goodies to take along with you, now is your chance. I'm sure the prices are obscene, but you're in the middle of the ocean; you pay or you don't. The Meh: * They noodge you for tips on the way out. Listen, I get it. Times are tough, but maybe raise prices a touch instead of noodging customers for remuneration. The Ugly: * No service currently to Santa Barbara Island due to dock damage. * If you are visiting during the storm season, then there's a very good chance your trip might get canceled, at which point you can choose to get a refund or take a credit for a future trip. This happened to us this past December, but luckily we're only a few hours away, so it wasn't a big deal to rebook for this summer. Conclusion: The only way to the Channel Islands and it's a fun ride. Book it!

As it turns out, all of the harbor seals, and sealions have names. We befriended one named Steve, he is much better at swimming than I am. He also taught me secret techniques to paddling. This one Pelican named Parry got into a barking match with some sealions, which is a fight he wasn't gonna win, let's be honest. Though I was hoping to see an M-A-N-A-T-E-E ... next time! If you're gonna go down on Haley street, where the dogs are easy and the sun is cheap, you never know just who you'll meet, on Haley. (But hopefully it's Rachel from the Santa Barbara Adventure Company, and you get her kayak tour; shout out!)

We had a fun ferry ride to the islands and even got to slow down to watch a large Sunfish (Mola Mola) snacking on some jellies. I recommend getting in line early to secure the best view seating on the ferry. Our kayak guides, Chuck and Adam, were exceptional--knowledgeable, engaging, and genuinely passionate about what they do. They made the entire trip both fun and informative, while ensuring we always felt safe and well cared for. We were fortunate to have perfect weather and warm water, which allowed us to explore all seven sea caves--many of which are inaccessible during high tide or rougher conditions. It made the experience even more special. Having lived in Santa Barbara for 22 years, this was my first time visiting the islands, and it was truly unforgettable. The pristine landscapes, abundant sea life, and even spotting several tiny island foxes while enjoying our picnic lunch, made it an unforgettable adventure. Not a problem but we told him we had been learning on glass boards and preferred looking at those. He then proceeded to say "Oh! So you're popping up and riding waves? Wow. Not to sound like I'm better than you but most people who learn from non professionals are already doing 5/6 things wrong..." I then immediately walked out. Tony was extremely disrespectful and made my husband and I both uncomfortable. Do not recommend coming in at all. Highly would suggest not coming in if you are a woman of any larger build. And although I do not live here and I'm only reviewing as a visitor, I did live on the lake in Westlake Village and in time, would probably get super bored among the old and crunchy people who inhabit those buildings. For now, I'm awed and happy there's this gorgeous area to enjoy a run, hang out, grab a bite or be pretentious while I'm here. Go Oxnard! :)
