Stopped in yesterday with the intent of grabbing for my wife and I a couple of the $200 prior-rental Treks they're selling, but fell in love with a used Bianchi Volpe, (guessing a 2011 model - photo included), and walked out with it instead. I've been stopping in over the last week or so and everyone I've dealt with has been fantastic. My first contact was James and he was knowledgeable and honest, then when I came back I dealt with Benny, (I think?), on the sales end and Travis in the shop. Lots of smiles out of these dudes which made for a genuinely pleasant experience. Travis put new tires on for me, (very affordable), and Benny modified my old rack to fit the purchase. I was so pleased with the visit that I grabbed my wife and came back. She test rode bikes for probably close to an hour and they were absolutely accommodating. A trip was made to their warehouse which meant they had to put pedals on a bike color she was considering, so the effort was top shelf. There was a gentleman in a Niners shirt at this point who helped a ton, too. We bought her a killer new bike, a bike rack, (which Benny helped me put on in the parking lot), some accessories, and two helmets. What would have been around a $600 total purchase for the both of us ended up being almost $2000, but I can tell you that on our bike ride after we were glowing about the purchase. A lot of that can be attributed to the level of comfort offered by the store. We tucked in and made it our home for a few hours yesterday, which says A LOT about the place. Neither one of us likes to spend money. This was a big day. I'll be back often for repairs, tune-ups, accessories, and to visit with Travis a bit more about Japanese handlebars. Rented a full suspension E bike for a weekend day ride while the ride was comfortable, and the bike features were good, when picking up, the staff did not go over the features of the bike, such as wireless shifting or where the charging port is. They also did not seem to check the bike to ensure that it was rental ready. The brakes were soft to begin the ride and as the ride progressed, they became very soft and the lever had to be pumped multiple times to get minimal breaking, causing the overuse of the front brakes and a crash. read more

For 2019 our annual weeklong bicycle trek to cross the country 200-300 miles at a time needed an outfitter for the Butte to Billings section. After initial research we contacted the Spoke Shop in Billings to rent 3 bicycles, including an e-bike for 9 days. Our total experience was wonderful - the bikes were ready when we arrived, the staff knowledgeable, helpful and congenial, and not a single problem with the bikes for the entire route of 300 miles. Great Shop! I got a good deal on a used bike from a buddy that needed some major work. I knew what it would cost to fix and I was on a tight budget. Sarah at the spoke shop hooked me up and gave me almost everything at a discount, it was $420 in work! For the same work and materials in CO where I now live it would have cost $600+ after tax. Everyone else at the shop seemed great as well. Plus, they now sell Santa Cruz as well as their standard Trek and Specialized stock. They are the only shop in town that carries high end bikes. I brought in my broken bike & was told by the staff it could not be fixed. They said it had a bent frame, although my frame had never been in any sort of accident. The gear that was broken, they said couldn't be fixed. They quickly started showing me $600 bikes to replace it. Upset I took my bike & left to go get a second opinion. I found another shop that took 5 seconds to tell me it only needed a $20 part & a tune up. Not saying this will happen to everyone, but I wasn't pleased when this shop almost got me to junk my $700 bike. My husbands bike was quoted at $350-$400 to fix, that's a lot of money on a bike..... Our second opinion gave us a $125 quote that included a tune up, new seat, new chain, gear shifter & other parts he needed. We are now happily riding our bikes & didn't blow a bunch of money. read more

I cannot give enough praise to this bike shop. I was competing in the Trans Am bike race and had to quit because of bad edema in my legs and feet. The owner of the shop helped me pack my bike, gave me a ride to Target to get some clothes, then gave me a ride to the airport. No charge. I purchased an expensive mountain bike from this shop (Specialized Enduro). I talked the store owner down on the price. After settling on the price, he seemed to be upset with me for the price he agreed upon. I got the cold shoulder from the staff. I really felt they were not friendly and I did not feel welcome. I will take my business elsewhere the next time I decide to buy a bicycle. read more

While waiting around the shop it was very clear that the staff are all incredibly knowledgable and passionate about cycling. An emergency back home in Boston forced me to abandon my bike trip across Montana. Without any notice, I showed up at the Spoke Shop a few hours before my flight to see if they would ship my bike home. The folks there were incredibly helpful. They said they can pack it but I would need to arrange a pick-up. They allowed me to to use their computer to arrange a pick-up with BikeFlight.com. They could not have been nicer. To top it off they gave me a ride to the airport. If I lived in Billings, I could not imagine going anywhere else for bike sales or service. read more

I had the problems detailed below and sent two emails (I am on tour so that is more convenient than trying to call given spotty cell service and roadside noise since I'm often on the road during business hours). I got no response to the emails so I called, and the guy who answered said "oh so sorry, we haven't checked the email for a week, but I'll get Sarah the service manager to call you back" I never got a call back. Here are the problems with the incompetent service/repair work they did on my bicycle. They broke my bicycle (failing to properly tighten crank arm when reattaching it, which caused it to slip so that both of my pedals ended up on the same side of the crank--if you're having trouble visualizing this bizarra mishap, imagine if bicycling were swimming--I would have been doing the butterfly rather than freestyle). When the crank arm slipped, that stripped the inside of it so that it was ruined. They failed to notice that my wheel rim was cracked while they were supposedly retentioning the spokes on that very wheel (had to discover that when the spokes came out of tension again just a few days later). They improperly put the tube back in the tire (when I fixed the flat I got a few miles away from their shop, the tube was actually folded on itself inside the tire--maybe someone had put it in really fast while it was rather deflated before inflating it) Speaking of inflating the tires, in spite of them knowing that I was on tour and leaving directly from their shop to continue down the road, were my tires properly inflated when I got the bicycle back from a $160 "complete tune up". Obviously they can't keep every bicycle in their warehouse at optimal inflation but it's just common sense that the customer should not have to be, like, "Uh, can I use a pump?" Replacing the crank arm (it was ruined because it was stripped on the inside) alone cost me over $100, plus I was stuck in Cody for an extra day and a half which caused hassles in terms of campsite reservations etc. My recommendation to bicyclists on tour--try to hold out until another city since this shop is the only one in Billings. read more

Get this...my daughter and I stopped by the Spoke Shop to pick up her brand new Torker trike that her father purchased. As we entered the store, we noticed 3 men gathered around a young lady wearing (very) tight biking pants, (BTW all four people were blocking the doorway). In fact, the 3 guys were so engrossed with the girl, we actually had to interrupt their oogling in order to get past them. After inching our way around the group, we proceeded to the checkout counter and waited, and waited, and waited some more, before someone finally helped us. And then...after completing the paperwork and adjusting the seat, the store clerk disappeared into the back room...NO-ONE helped us out the door or offered to help load the bike, or suggested accessories that she might need. After getting the bike out the door (with the help of a customer), we noticed the group blocking the door had moved outside. As we struggled loading the bike in the back of my pickup-truck, I asked the men in the group if any of them worked at the store. One of the men stated, yes he was an employee. Can you believe this?!?! I had to [ask] him for assistance. That being said...Unless you're a tiny young girl, wearing really tight biking pants, don't shop at the Spoke Shop... If the bike had not been a gift, I would have asked for a refund and taken my business elsewhere! read more
