Hot Sauces, rubs, BBQ sauces, gourmet foods, spices, salsas, key lime products & kitchen gadgets
Steve E.

Down towards the west end of Dodecanese Boulevard in the Sponge Docks area of Tarpon Springs sits a great little emporium selling over 300 types of hot sauces, 50 different BBQ sauces, marinades, salsas, pickled vegetables, seasonings and rubs, jams and jellies, dips and spreads, coffee, tea, and honeys, gourmet foods, and kitchen gadgets. This fantastic little spot is called The Spicemans Kitchen, and it's run by Chuck and Cindy Wilson, who wisely left the cold weather behind, and moved to Tarpon Springs. Spicemans Kitchen can be found in a little mall called the Lighthouse Shops, near the traffic circle, and it is well worth walking down to his end of Dodecanese to visit this shop. The store is jammed full of products which are all neatly arranged and labeled on the shelves. There is plenty of room to walk up and down the aisles, chuckling at the names of the various hot sauces and rubs, while searching for those perfect gift ideas. Chuck wandered the store with me and pointed out some of the best-selling (and most lethal) spices and sauces. He showed me Bad Byron's Butt Rub (A little butt rub makes everything better), which is the top selling spice rub to use on pork ribs. Next to it was the equally popular Gator Hammock Cooter Rub, followed by every imaginable type of seasoning and spice blends. There is an entire aisle dedicated to hot sauces, and Chuck gave me the lowdown on the top ten best sellers: * Professor Phardtpounder's Colon Cleaner * Catch a Fire Green Lava Pepper Sauce * Doc Holliday's Feel Good Elixir * Ass Reaper * Dave's Gourmet Insanity Sauce * Key West Key Lime Hot Sauce * Black Mamba Venomous Hot Sauce * The Ghost Hot Sauce (made with Ghost peppers) * The Hottest F*ckin Sauce * Moruga Madness Hot Sauce (made with Scorpion chiles from Trinidad) You'll be giggling at the crazy names before you get halfway down the aisle, and this is when Chuck pointed me up towards the front counter where they have free samples of many of these different hot sauces. You splash a drop or two onto a cracker and then try to carry on a normal conversation while the flames of Maleficent are burning away deep in your belly. Spicemans also has a wide variety of sweet and savory types of sauces, and even some tasty flavored honeys, and dessert options. I had a great time exploring this store, and even more fun talking with Chuck and Cindy while trying to re-gain some composure after the hot sauce tasting. I left the store with a couple of bottles of hot sauce, a few different spice rubs, and a No-Bake Cheesecake Mix (Peach Cobbler style).

They were able to answer all of the questions I had about any of the Greek pastries I haven't heard of. It was very lively in there because it's also connected to a restaurant. They had a variety of pastries. I got the pistachio baklava and the tiramisu pasta. Both were very rich - I don't think I'm a big fan of the flaky bread but anyone who is will appreciate this bakery. One of the best Greek bakeries I've been to. Highly recommend.

The baklava & the other delicacies were good. But none of the ladies behind the counter asked if I was ready to order or even greeted me when i walked up to the counter, especially the two ladies folding the boxes on the counter. I had to get their attention so I can be served. I understand that the other ladies were busy fulfilling orders. Then we came back for lunch after our tour, the place was busy but were seated right away. The music in the background wasn't too loud. For a busy restaurant like that, we got our food in good time. Our server was very attentive & checked on us a couple times if we needed anything else. My pastitsio was good & the fam liked their lamb kebab.

It's nice to shop in a store in this community that's real. You'll find every food and ingredient and product from Greece that you know, including a couple aisles of dry foods, a wall of refrigerated and frozen foods, some soaps and cosmetics, and even wine. As always, we got one of their five kinds of by-the-ounce bulk feta cheese, and sometimes we'll get one of around a dozen other bulk Greek cheeses. Of course we got fresh tasty olive oil and phyllo dough. Sometimes a tasty wine from Greece. When they have it, we get a sweet Mavrodaphni, which reminds us of friends who brought some back for us once from a summer job in the islands. By the way, park carefully. There is little street parking near here. And nearby stores and restaurants are serious that parking is only for their patrons, which seems fair.
