I began to triple feed, which was effective, but not ultimately sustainable for me. I wanted to give breastfeeding a good solid try but I didn't know what to do next, and I was tired and discouraged. Per our pediatrician's recommendation, I pursued speech offices for help. I contacted nine, seven of which either did not get back to me or said they were unable to help. Thankfully, one office directed me to Marina. When I first spoke with Marina, she assured me that she had worked with babies with Down Syndrome before, that my goals were completely doable, and that together we would find a plan that worked for my son and for our family. Her confidence and professionalism gave me such reassurance and hope! I felt like she cared about my situation as much as I did. Before our first meeting, I filled out a questionnaire with questions so specific that I could tell Marina would be able to get to the bottom of things. When we met in person, Marina approached things calmly, professionally, confidently, and kindly. Together we clarified my goals multiple times to make sure that everything we were doing would work towards that end. Marina didn't give us simple textbook answers; she listened carefully and thoughtfully and spoke to our unique needs and desires. Because of her training in lactation consulting, speech-language pathology, AND feeding therapy, Marina is a one-stop-shop and is able to think about issues from all angles and get to the heart of matters! (This is why we refer to her as the Queen in our home). After I met with Marina, I came home armed with a specific plan and resources to help move me towards my goal of exclusive breastfeeding. Through various supplies, exercises, and changes to my technique and routine, my son gradually got better and better, and I am thrilled that he now exclusively breastfeeds and is growing right on track! Marina was there every step of the way in the weeks following our meeting to answer my questions, cheerlead me, and guide me through the process. Thank you, Marina, for believing in me and my son, and for giving my son a running start into his future through the gift of breastfeeding, giving him not only the standard benefits, but providing him with a solid foundation so important for babies with Down Syndrome. Also, please note that while this is my experience, this practice has been serving Astoria for over 20 years, I hope other patients who have had better experience leave their reviews as well. We brought our son for an evaluation session for a stutter. The office staff did not book the appointment into the OT's calendar, when we arrived she had no idea we were coming. She spent less than 30 minutes evaluating our son, a process that should take between 60 and 90 minutes according to other professional speech therapists. Family Speech Center's staff initally told me over the phone that the evaluation would be covered and I'd owe only a copay of $50, but after the evaluation was done they charged our insurance $780 (for 23 minutes). The max our insurance allowed was $280, which I was forced to pay before they would share the written evaluation with us. The evaluation missed significant portions of our son's abilities when compared to a 90 minute evaluation from a second professional. The second professional that we saw said that therapy was unnecessary for the stutter at this age, and to keep an eye on the drooling and mucus flow. They noted that the first 20 minutes of a session is getting the kids into a relaxed state, and we should throw out the evaluation from Family Speech Center. UPDATE: I was contacted several times after leaving this review, first by the office manager in an email that claimed "The statements you made in the reviews are FALSE." After several emails exchanged, the partners contacted me and clarified their evaluation methodology. For their office, a 30 minute evaluation is standard if a patient does not show other signs that need further attention, and the provider had the audio recording with our son to review for her evaluation. They did offer a refund for the services or a second complimentary evaluation, which was polite, but I chose to decline both.

But it remains true that initially she had him working with different graduate students from week to week, and she did not discuss this with us first. We were charged the full amount as well. 2. I did ask for the worksheets to be sent to me, after discovering the website we'd been directed to wasn't working, but was told no by some of the therapists/students we'd worked with initially. Linda only stopped in briefly to check in during our sessions for the first month or so, and I barely had a chance to talk to her. Then when I did get to see Linda more and talked about the website not working, she told me to search for worksheets on Pinterest instead. I was very disappointed that this was her response. 3. If working on one sound at a time is standard, and having two sessions per week is also standard, I respect following that protocol. But neither Linda nor any of the therapists/students we worked with ever explained either of these issues to me as a treatment plan. In fact, we were told to expect the opposite, that his issues were minor and could be addressed with once weekly sessions in a limited time frame. In our last session, Linda expressed surprise at "discovering" another articulation issue. She said something like "Guess what we found," while as stated in my original review, this had already been identified in my son's initial evaluation. I've taken the time to compose these reviews only in hopes of sharing information with other parents seeking assistance for their children.

Her own frustration was manifested in aggression and she went into her own world quite frequently. Due to the skill, compassion and diligence that Linda has brought to my daughter, she has become a completely different little girl.
