Please note Family Speech Center has two locations, this is a review for the Astoria location,…read morealthough I believe they share an office staff. Also, please note that while this is my experience, this practice has been serving Astoria for over 20 years, I hope other patients who have had better experience leave their reviews as well. We brought our son for an evaluation session for a stutter. The office staff did not book the appointment into the OT's calendar, when we arrived she had no idea we were coming. She spent less than 30 minutes evaluating our son, a process that should take between 60 and 90 minutes according to other professional speech therapists. Family Speech Center's staff initally told me over the phone that the evaluation would be covered and I'd owe only a copay of $50, but after the evaluation was done they charged our insurance $780 (for 23 minutes). The max our insurance allowed was $280, which I was forced to pay before they would share the written evaluation with us. The evaluation missed significant portions of our son's abilities when compared to a 90 minute evaluation from a second professional. The second professional that we saw said that therapy was unnecessary for the stutter at this age, and to keep an eye on the drooling and mucus flow. They noted that the first 20 minutes of a session is getting the kids into a relaxed state, and we should throw out the evaluation from Family Speech Center. UPDATE: I was contacted several times after leaving this review, first by the office manager in an email that claimed "The statements you made in the reviews are FALSE." After several emails exchanged, the partners contacted me and clarified their evaluation methodology. For their office, a 30 minute evaluation is standard if a patient does not show other signs that need further attention, and the provider had the audio recording with our son to review for her evaluation. They did offer a refund for the services or a second complimentary evaluation, which was polite, but I chose to decline both.

I was really excited to begin my rehab journey at Function Enhancing PT (FEPT). My experience…read moredidn't seem to match those of other reviewers unfortunately though. The care itself I'd give an incomplete. I don't have anything bad to say as it seemed helpful while I was there. I did not finish out my rehab here so I'm honestly not sure how I would have ultimately fared if I had stayed. Administratively and communicatively speaking, this place is a mess. To outline some of the failures I experienced... 1.) I had an experience where one of the staff members was multitasking when I was trying to book my next appointment. I was given the day and time of my appointment. I wrote it in my calendar on the spot. Apparently, either the wrong date and time were recorded on their side or I was given the wrong info. I showed up on the day of the appointment and the office was completely closed. Mind you, getting to the establishment is 40 minutes round trip for me. When I reached out after to express disappointment, I was told by the staff I was called several times and that my appointment had been for the day before. Turns out, the number I provided on my first day was not recorded by the office correctly to begin with. FEPT did not try to charge me for the visit but there was an undertone of blame lodged which was unsettling. 2.) Upon initially reaching out to solicit care, the office staff plugged in my insurance info and informed me of my co-pay. Several weeks in, the staff asked if I had received any checks for services to my mailing address (I had not). They informed me they hadn't received any reimbursement and it was coming back as out of network. Puzzling given they ran my information before I began my rehabilitation and I was in-network. Out of fear I was going to get some surprise bill, I called my insurance and it turned out that the therapist FEPT originally submitted paperwork for was not the one who was servicing me. I don't know what the in-house structure is among the PTs, but either way, FEPT were submitting the claims wrong initially and this created yet another headache though this was ultimately resolved but not without time and effort on my part. 3.) I noticed after my initial PT sessions were approved, my insurance only approved 3 or 4 sessions at a time. Going twice a week, that meant my sessions were expiring every 10-14 days. This seemed unusual so I called up my insurance (again) and the reason I was given was that FEPT had failed to provide sufficient information to clearly indicate where my progress was and the insurance company was made to believe I was close to the end of my needed treatment. I was nowhere close to being finished. I'm not sure internally who was responsible for this, but clearly the insurance had not received what they needed to process more sessions at a time when more were needed. 4.) This brings me to my final issue and it's related to the above. As sessions were regularly running out, the staff did not stay on top of this. They would wait until I would finish my last session to seek authorization for additional ones. I would run out of sessions and then be told that I would need to wait a few extra days again before booking my next one so they could request more. This would mean in that week, I would not get in my normal needed treatment thus extending the timeline for my recovery. My insurance also informed me they do not require all sessions be used to seek authorization for additional ones. Once this happened the last time I was there, FEPT said they would call me back after they received authorization and would book my next appointment. They never called and needless to say, I never went back. I went elsewhere. I could nitpick about some overbookings or the fact that I could never get the same appointment time, but those were minor in comparison to the above. I hope my experience was an isolated one, but it sure seems like this place has a lot of work to do.
