Marina at Therapy Matters is the REAL DEAL! When my son with Down Syndrome was two weeks old, he was not gaining weight as needed. I began to triple feed, which was effective, but not ultimately sustainable for me. I wanted to give breastfeeding a good solid try but I didn't know what to do next, and I was tired and discouraged. Per our pediatrician's recommendation, I pursued speech offices for help. I contacted nine, seven of which either did not get back to me or said they were unable to help. Thankfully, one office directed me to Marina. When I first spoke with Marina, she assured me that she had worked with babies with Down Syndrome before, that my goals were completely doable, and that together we would find a plan that worked for my son and for our family. Her confidence and professionalism gave me such reassurance and hope! I felt like she cared about my situation as much as I did. Before our first meeting, I filled out a questionnaire with questions so specific that I could tell Marina would be able to get to the bottom of things. When we met in person, Marina approached things calmly, professionally, confidently, and kindly. Together we clarified my goals multiple times to make sure that everything we were doing would work towards that end. Marina didn't give us simple textbook answers; she listened carefully and thoughtfully and spoke to our unique needs and desires. Because of her training in lactation consulting, speech-language pathology, AND feeding therapy, Marina is a one-stop-shop and is able to think about issues from all angles and get to the heart of matters! (This is why we refer to her as the Queen in our home). After I met with Marina, I came home armed with a specific plan and resources to help move me towards my goal of exclusive breastfeeding. Through various supplies, exercises, and changes to my technique and routine, my son gradually got better and better, and I am thrilled that he now exclusively breastfeeds and is growing right on track! Marina was there every step of the way in the weeks following our meeting to answer my questions, cheerlead me, and guide me through the process. My twin boys have been coming to therapy matters for a year. They were both iugr preemies and eating was a challenge for both in terms of options and textures. They were 3 years old still eating 6 month old textures (purée foods) when we first started in October 2020. In just under a year, our options and textures have grown ridiculously. Spaghetti, fish sticks, chicken nuggets , fries , quesadillas, raviolis(you know all the toddler friendly stuff) as we work on fruit and veggies ... . I am so happy with Marina and Esther, they have been very patient with us and always flexible when need be. Marina and Gabby helped our son, who started off as an 8 month old refusing all purees and continuing to struggle with his bottle feeds, become a one-year-old who LOVES food. They were patient, knowledgeable, kind, and determined, even though he was a really tough case. They were flexible about in-person and televisits, when we weren't comfortable coming in due to COVID numbers. They knew all the right providers for referrals (lip and tongue tie release, bodywork, etc.) My family is incredibly grateful for their help. I truly believe if it wasn't for Marina my son's tongue and lip tie would have gone on being unnoticed by doctors and I would still be struggling with a toddler who couldn't eat.  Before seeing Marina, I brought my son to multiple feeding therapists, doctors, ENT drs, etc and no one could tell me why my son kept spitting out his food.  I was so beyond frustrated.  A friend of mine highly recommended Marina, and within minutes of meeting her she noticed the ties and guided me in the process of how to get them released and even showed me stretches to do post surgery.  We continued to work with her after my son had his surgery and she successfully retaught him how to eat and swallow.  It was a long process but so beyond thankful for her knowledge and patience.  I honestly can't recommend Marina enough! read more

We had great experience at Therapy Matters, and wish we would know about them earlier. The evaluation was done first and was super informational to me. We then attended weekly therapy sessions and were able to resolve the problem that we came with and continued to come to expand our food choices. Our daughter was starting to eat solids, around 6 months of age, but we noticed she was having a hard time chewing and swallowing. Marina immediately recognized the issues and designed a therapy approach for her. She walked us through everything in detail and explained all the different elements that go into a baby learning to eat solids. Our experience the last two years at Therapy Matters has been nothing less than exceptional - our daughter (who was two at the time) was referred to TM by a doctor/surgeon, who specializes in tongue tie, to help her with some of the speech, oral and other communication issues she was experiencing. My child had delayed eating development, including problems chewing, with an underbite, and suspicion for posterior tongue tie. On advice from a doctor we contacted Marina Bakharovskaya of Therapy Matters NY, and started sessions. Marina made a great connection with our child. She worked with our LO, taught us how to best practice chewing, gave us excellent advice and directions, including the tools for practice, the techniques, and food progression to use for our issues. Marina is bi-lingual and this was great for our baby who only knows Russian. they clicked great, she helped us pinpoint his issues which i subconsciously knew about, but as a new parent could not pinpoint but only struggle. Marina, of Therapy Matters NY, was highly recommended for feeding therapy following my then 8 week old son's tongue and lip tie revision. He was suffering from a variety of issues, including poor weight gain and difficulty latching, even after revising the ties. Marina was extremely knowledgeable on the subject and took time to educate me on the process of sucking/swallowing. She conducted a thorough evaluation, determined the problem, and developed a treatment plan to remediate the areas of difficulty. She was patient, addressed all my questions and concerns, and worked SO well with my son. I am so grateful for the work that Marina has put in with my son . We had a very picky eater with an extreme gag reflux . Even though we had a speech therapist from EI , he was not making any progress with his feedings . It's when Marina stepped in that we saw our son truly make changes with his eating habits . She was so calm and patient with him as she worked through desensitizing him to many types of food textures , and introducing him to so many different types of foods. I am so grateful for everything Marina has done for my child. My child had feeding issues straight from birth. Prob related to lip/tongue/cheek tie. Although we had a successful release of all the ties, we still had major feeding issues. At 1 yr old even a dissolvable puff was not tolerated. Any solids would be reject and majority was due to a chewing delay. Marina was wonderful, using all techniques with the z-vibe, chewing sticks and different massages of the mouth.
