An Pota Caife (translation: The Coffee Pot) has a great central location in the middle of Shop…read moreStreet, a cozy little outdoor seating area and an interesting, diverse menu. Crepes seem to be one of their specialties, so I had the Mediterranean crepe (€7.50) which was filled with a nice selection of Med veggies - peppers, aubergine, courgette, olives, and onion, combined with feta cheese. The veggies were well cooked and very flavorful and I'd definitely have it again. My brothers had a bowl of creamy soup (can't remember what type - perhaps butternut squash?) and a chili quesadilla, both reportedly very good. The coffee (they use Puro beans) was also very good - they make a nice flat white. I'm giving them 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact. I didn't get around to asking for details on their ingredients and sourcing, and unfortunately there's not a lot of information available online. The only thing I know is that they do have a lot of vegetarian options on the menu and their veggies were very fresh and delicious. Perhaps the fact that they choose to serve Puro coffee says a lot about their ethos. Puro (which was nominated for a Guardian sustainability award) supplies shade grown, Fair Trade certified coffee (some organic) and are on a mission to preserve rainforests. Working with the World Land Trust, they have used proceeds from coffee sales (at least 2%) to purchase and conserve more than 16,000 acres of tropical rainforest, including orangutan habitat in Borneo. They also have social initiatives, such as their Trees4Schools project in South Africa and providing supplies and coffee plants to Fair Trade farmers in DR Congo. So, if you want a well-made cup of coffee where proceeds go to a good cause, An Pota Caife is a great option. The one story I found online about the café was about a man who had left an envelope of money behind one day, which turned out to be his entire disability allowance. The staff kept it in their safe for three months until they happened to spot him back in the café again, and presented him with his cash. So they appear to be good folk :-) Interested in writing green star reviews? If so, contact me! (greenstarsproject)

Fantastic little café with some very delicious savoury and sweet crepes. It's lovely to get a seat outside and watch the world go by. The juices are delicious in particular. The staff are always incredibly pleasant and helpful, and you can tell they work hard, long shifts. I will return again and again!

And when I say small I mean something like 8'x10'. Julie works behind the counter which is full of goodies scones and cupcakes that she's just baked today. Everything here is truly delicious. Julie is an extraordinary host welcoming you into what feels to be her kitchen. The town regulars stop in for a cup of coffee or just conversation. Even the priest was there to eat his breakfast. We stayed more than an hour speaking with the people coming and going into this very unique place. Needless to say the ambience feels like you're in her home. The coffee is just great. I ordered a cappuccino that was dusted with chocolate on top. Smooth and delicious. My wife enjoyed her latte very much. We ordered 2 savory crepes, the Vegetarian and the Smoky Yoke. My wife said that this was the best crepe she had ever enjoyed. What's amazing is the the crepe is thicker than what you usually receive and so it holds the contents without falling apart. And it has a great flavor. The crepes were absolutely great! Her scones are totally superb. My wife had a fruit scone and I had one with a name I don't remember. It was interestingly spiced, moist, with an incredible consistency. Athenry is about 20 minutes east of Galway. The small town is worth a visit. It's worth coming here just to eat at The Nook.

We found Brian Hackett hard at work in his jewelry studio, which I think has taken over the Crafts Gallery space. In any case, we were impressed by Brian's work but were not in the market for jewelry, so we moved along. In the other wing of the building, we were astounded to find the most AMAZING little bakery - to think we almost drove right by this place and didn't even know it existed. Fabiola, Brian's partner, has brought a little piece of France to this quiet corner of Ireland! Her delicate pastries and exquisite desserts reflect professional training and an artistic eye. They taste every bit as good as they look, too... I am still dreaming about the raspberry tart. Oh, la la. Fabiola herself is a welcoming host and will make you feel right at home as you enjoy her sun-bathed cafe, which overlooks the patio garden and fields beyond. A magical place, with cheerful touches of color and character in every inch of the decor...the perfect spot to sit and stay a while as you savor a mouth-watering pastry or scone and linger over a cup of dark, true coffee. Not to be missed if you are passing through Doolin. If the signs for the Doolin Crafts Gallery lead you astray, here is my best attempt at directions: take R479 northeast out of Doolin. About 1.0km out of town, you will see a large white church on a right-hand corner. Take a right on the lane just before it (L1036, I believe). The cafe and jewelry gallery will just a few hundred meters up on your right.
