The Society Rooms is, I think, the only Wetherspoon pub in Macclesfield. Situated a short walk from the train station, it's convenient for a quick pint if you're waiting for a train.
The interior is pretty much standard JDW fare, with the large posters relating to local history and why the pub is named so. There's plenty of seating inside, easily enough to accommodate several large groups and probably over 100 people.
We were here for a friend's leaving drinks, so there was a large group of 14 or so of us all ordering food and drinks to one table - which we'd made from several smaller tables.
The food is pretty much standard for a Wetherspoons. I ordered the BBQ Hog Dog; a foot-long frankfurter with pulled pork and cheese on top, with chips and onion rings. For the price (£7.25 including a pint) I wasn't complaining. Others ordered a variety of meals, all of which went down well enough. Only slight hiccup was that two of the mains got overlooked and so came out last, despite being ordered before mine.
On the beer front, there's the usual draught offerings from 'spoons such as Coors, Carling, Guinness etc. However, this pub had a decent range of bottled craft beers including several from BrewDog, Brooklyn Lager, Blue Moon etc and a decent range of cask ales.
One thing to note is that The Society Rooms have apparently won the Platium "Loo of the Year" award. The bathroom is pretty decent, but I didn't realise that people rated these things!
At the end of the day, though, whilst this pub is a Wetherspoons it's a pretty good one. Might not be the most interesting pub ever, but it'll do you a decent pint and decent food. read more
