This store is run by a lovely couple, Lorne and Marilyn, who are experts in customer service and whose family have run this business for 42 years. With all the pictures I took inside their store I thought I owed it to them to purchase something. I told Marilyn that I wasn't intending to stop in so all I had was $10; one downside of this store is that there are no price lists or price tags on anything. Marilyn suggested a beautiful thick Salmon filet. When I arrived home, I seasoned the filet and steamed it, taking care not to overcook it. I served it with oriental noodles and corn because that's all I had available. It was enough for a nice light lunch for me and my hubby. The Salmon was the tastiest, most delicious, mouth watering filet I have ever had at this price point in Toronto. I'm from Southern California so fresh seafood is abundant and cheap. The times when we are far away from the coast I rarely buy seafood at the store or order seafood from a restaurant because it's just not fresh; if it's fresh, it costs an arm and a leg and an organ or two. I will never buy fresh or frozen fish anywhere else. If you are any where close to the corner of Victoria Park and St. Clair, then you must visit this quaint nautically themed seafood market. It pains me to call out a small business owner during difficult times but during our last two visits to the store there was a staff member that was not wearing a mask. I assumed the first time that the staff member had forgotten but on our second visit when I was greeted by a staff member without a mask I enquired and was told that they were not required to wear masks. Instructions on their door spell out the customers obligation to wear a mask and I had hoped they would respect the safety of their customers and do likewise. Too bad we can no longer support this local business.

I would consider coming back for fish I intend to prepare in a different way. But the person working here tried to upsell me, saying that each meal requires about 0.5 lbs fish. This might be true of cooked fish, but it likely isn't for sushi. I took my one pound of fish home and used a very small amount of it to make very meaty maki that comprised the entirety of my evening meal. (The fish was fresh, though, and reasonably flavourful.) One bigger issue: a significant portion (like a third) of the small piece of tuna I bought contained silverskin, which made the piece inedible. Totally not acceptable, when you consider the price of the tuna was over $30 per pound. This is a okay place to go if you live nearby and want sushi-grade fish. There aren't many places in the city that offer it. Next time, though, I'm gonna try Taro's. The selection there looks pretty amazing.
