Super nice and helpful staff, very patient with my kids. Good selection of books and media. Fun play areas for tots. -1 Star for the makerspace. It's a cool idea in concept, but kind of inaccessible for people who aren't regulars I think? I walked in there with my 10 yo son to look at the 3D printers, and got blank stares from the 6 or so 20-somethings in there. Weird vibes. read more

The Slover Library is a real gem in downtown Norfolk. Built in 2015, it is an amazing artistic combination of modern and classical architecture. Open to the public, it is worth a walk-through just to see the atrium. The 2nd floor children's room is filled with fun, interactive floor-panel computers. Kids will love it! There is also a gaming room on the 5th floor/teen floor as well as podcast booths and maker studios. The general book collection is really robust and there is a Norfolk/VA genealogy and history collection that is one of the best in the state. There is also a restaurant and access to the next-door Selden Market, a small business venture space and pop up market. A must see for visitors and if you are from the Hampton Roads area, you should be visiting regularly. Parking is easiest at the MacArthur Center garage on City Hall Avenue; just walk across the MacArthur Light Rail park to Slover Library. read more

This is my most favorite library yet (between San Diego libraries and others in Norfolk). It's architecture is interesting, creative, and spacious. They have an outdoor balcony which is furnished with chairs and tables, perfect when the weather is right. The only downfall is that there aren't any outlets outside. The library offers a checkout system which allows you to check your books out yourself; I thought it was neat and convenient. The computers available for use here are MAC's and new! There is always personnel present in these rooms to help out when you need it (i.e. Printing, general questions, etc.) read more

This library has so much to offer. Not only is it located at a convenient location right by MacArthur Center downtown it also is close to Grandby Street where many restaurants are located and other businesses. This library is beyond gorgeous. It offers a cuisine cafe type of area on the first floor. There are various levels and areas of the library to read, study, and enjoy. Offers entertainment for all ages. I definitely recommend coming to check it out, you definitely won't regret it. By far my one of my favorite libraries in the 757. read more

This library is the gem of Norfolk. I rented the 6th floor community room for my wedding reception, and it was absolutely perfect and stunning. I had access to the rooftop balcony, and it added the perfect backdrop for my guests and me. Working with the Slover and the catering company, Cuisine and Company, was stress free and easy. read more

Beautiful building. Took my kids to an art attack class which was free. Super cool that they do that. Do be aware that the classes are SUPER simple and fast so if you're driving in, they won't be occupied for very long at all. We explored the library after and had a good time. There were not as many books for kids as I was expecting but they had little play areas and computers. Seems the focus was less on books than on other things offered in the children's department. Staff was friendly, bathrooms were clean. NO PARKING OR VALIDATION. We had to walk a bit which wasn't ideal with construction and traffic and 4 young kids in tow. It was an enjoyable experience but I will stick to other libraries to avoid the parking situation and get better book choices for my kiddos. read more

OMG I completely nerd out when I walk in to this library!!! I could not believe how big this library is!! I was blown away the first time I walked into it. The sheer amount of books, movies, and other forms of media they have is wonderful!!! The fact I can ride my bike here makes it even better!!! The only thing I can complain about is I wish they had more new release movies. Other than that I recommend this library to everyone!!! read more

This place is amazing!! Took my 2 year old son and he loved it! The children's area is so much fun from the interactive floor games to the large play kitchen area, this is a must go. It also has a cafe we did not get a chance to visit but will in the future and connects to the cool Selden Market. Also if you are in to some history, the original library is full of it. read more

Probably the coolest and most exquisite places here in Hampton Roads. Modern architecture infused in part with Norfolk's historic building. State of the art media/production room, 6 floors of pure exploration, a lower level for silence and concentration, balconies for fresh air, entire kids section, and above all--warm interior. Conveniently next to the light rail stop and the mall. What better place and time to have this here in Hampton Roads. read more

The Slover Library is the most amazing library I've ever seen. It is a marvel of architecture and art. The book collection is excellent. The kids play area and library is the best in the region. There are tons of great technology offerings including gaming, computers (Mac or PC) green screen, and interactive displays. The meeting rooms are spacious and many feature spectacular views. read more

Beautiful library. Really cool interactive library of images and stories on the 3rd floor. If you are into genealogy, and you are looking for data and images of family from VA and other states in that area then you should definitely visit this library. They even have images of Veterans listed on the Vietnam War Memorial wal in D.C. They have many images due to donated photos and yearbooks. It really is worth checking out. It's also connected to a small business center which is also worth a peek. read more

My review of Slover remains the same. It is raining outside, so the homeless folks are inside the library... which, I wouldn't care about if they weren't talking to themselves, talking to each other, or if they didn't smell so terrible that it's difficult to concentrate. There is also someone talking loudly on the phone in the corner who I've asked to get off the phone twice. It's the same thing every day. I don't really understand why the library tolerates the behavior. I've alerted librarians more than once. Their code of conduct is clear... "Patrons not engaged in reading, studying, using library materials or attending meetings or library programming shall be required to leave the building." Further, "Anyone whose bodily hygiene is offensive so as to constitute a nuisance to other persons shall be required to leave the building." Of course, there is a rule concerning disturbing noise as well. I mean... it's a library. I don't know why people think it is ok to conduct interviews, talk on the phone, or bring their kids to an area of the library that that has a "Quiet Study" sign on the wall and people dilligently working around them. The rules are in place. They just aren't enforced. There is a man unpacking a large duffel back in front me as I write this with costco-sized containers of spices and tupperwares full of food. While I am fascinated by the sight because I have no idea why he has an array of spices that he carries with him in the first place, he clearly isn't here to read/study/use library materials/etc.... and more importantly it is incredibly distracting. The library has security. They have a front desk too, which everyone passes by on the way in. They are adequately staffed. When someone walks in with four large bags and a sleeping bag, perhaps it should throw up a flag that they aren't there to use the facility for the purposes it was intended. It's a shame because, as stated in the previous review, the library is a beautiful facility and everything it should be in terms of form and function. It's a great place to walk through, but not a great place to study. read more

Staff was rude and pushy. In a place like a library you'd expect them to encourage learning. Instead my wife and I were kicked out 15 minutes early without any explanation. It's a nice looking library, but looks cant help poor staffing. read more

I would've given this 5 stars as it is an enormous library with many resources and informative staff, but one employee ruined this experience for me. As it neared closing time, I was looking for my family and entered the 6th floor. The security guard then informed me that this floor was closed to the public. I thanked her and waited at the elevator to return the main entrance. While waiting, she proceeded to sternly lecture me about why the 6th floor was off limits. Why she thought this was necessary, I have no idea. I was compliant and offered no protest, yet her lack of courtesy and customer service ruined what was otherwise a pleasant experience for my first visit. read more

The $65 million Slover Library is among the most innovative and technologically advanced public libraries in the country offering Apple and Dell computers, internet access, interactive displays and a digital media lab. Additionally there are Star Trek size, computerized touch screens on tables and on walls. Plus, these giant table and wall display screens are now capable with Google Earth which is amazing. These are invaluable to students and academics as well as residents. This is a great advantage and creates a technologically enabled environment. read more
