I was here for a conference and it was pretty good for conference space. There were enough tables and chairs for everyone and having a Starbucks here was great since the conference coffee wasn't the best. The bathrooms are clean and were regularly cleaned while the conference was in progress. I wish there was a water bottle filling station, but the water fountains did the trick. Like with most conferences, the chairs can grow to be uncomfortable after a while. The audiovisual equipment worked great and no one seemed to have tech issues. Now, unlike most conferences, the temperature inside was perfect. I also liked how close the parking garage was to the building, which made finding check-in easy. Since this is an arena, there were people playing basketball during the time we were there and they rang the buzzer a few times, which made the whole room jump every time (it became quite funny after a while). read more

Before I begin let me start off by saying that this review is based solely upon my personal experiences and my personal experiences alone, so with that being said let's go!. I have been here for a number of occasions, graduations and other events so this visit was no different as far as the set up and layout of the events. You walk in the front entrance and through metal detectors then you find your seats and if you have any questions or concerns there are ushers to assist you at every level of the establishment!. I took off a star because the concert event was supposed another group perform but that group never showed up! But I refuse to let that stop me from attending another event here. read more

I've been to Chartway Arena numerous times for a myriad of events. Originally named the Ted Constant Convocation Center upon its grand opening in October 2002, this venue is a fantastic upgrade to the outdated (but iconic) Scope Arena in Downtown Norfolk. There are two parking garages (Constant Center 45th Street Garage & Constant Center South Garage on 43rd) I know of that can accommodate the thousands of people coming in. For some events that maybe aren't as crowded (like the Spartyka Fight League), my friends and I have been able to park across the street along 42nd & 43rd (near the fire station). Chartway isn't the biggest venue (seating is roughly 8600 to 9600, depending on the event), but it is one with unobstructed views from nearly any seat. I've enjoyed many ODU basketball games, a couple of wrestling events (AEW Dynamite & AEW Rampage) and a fair share of concerts (Foo Fighters & Jokoy immediately come to mind). Acoustics are fantastic and everything looks fairly clean (bathrooms are an exception - but bathrooms always get abused). Haven't had issues with concessions - their lines seem to move quickly. I've no complaints there. If you have the opportunity, I'd recommend getting a group together to purchase a suite. You are treated to a private entrance, exclusive elevators and you can choose any food/beverage from their provided menu (which are served in trays with sternos to keep all of the food warm). It makes for a more convenient night out and is worth the price (since it's factored in with the cost of admission). With it being nearly 21 years old, Chartway may be due for a facelift and/or expansion. It's still an excellent facility, though, and I look forward to attending more events in the future. There are several concessions from souvenir merchandise to pretzels, popcorn, even Starbucks was in house and was open. I love it here! I have been to this arena for several events. Let's see: kiddie shows wrestling plays concerts comedy shows conventions graduations To name a few, and this place delivers five stars each time! Every time I have visited the facility including the restrooms are well maintained. Parking, plentiful. The garages are well staffed. Now you will pay a great deal at the concessions area, but the food here is pretty decent for arena food. It depends on the event, arrive early to avoid long lines. You have the option to purchase suites if you are attending with a group or just rather have a section to yourself away from the general population. Great venue! But keep in mind, the higher you park up the longer it will take to get out the garage, so pack your patience. There is street/meter parking available if you want to pay extra. But garage parking is usually free. Have fun and enjoy life :) read more

I have been to this venue before but never for an actual concert. I don't know who can say they don't like this arena but it is perfect for me. I like the fact that it's smaller and more intimate than other places. The check in process was quick and easy, the staff seemed friendly and thoroughly wanted the concert goers to have a good time. I purchased tickets to see New Edition. I specifically picked this area because I felt that we would have more space with Covid going on. I am so glad that it did not disappoint. Our seats ended up being at a table with high back chairs which were very comfy. The section we were in had a private bar only for the people who were seated in that area. Upon entering the area you could only gain access by showing your ticket. I thought this was a great strategy because people from other areas couldn't come up and crowd the bar. I especially like the fact that unlike being on the floor, if people wanted to stand I was still able to see without them blocking my view. The concert was supposed to start at 8 PM, it got started shortly after and ended shortly after 10 PM. Again another positive note as most concerts start extremely late and you end up leaving extremely early in the morning. We had a wonderful time and the show was absolutely amazing. I would not change a thing. I prefer going to this venue instead of The Scope or The Colosseum. read more

First time here and we got to see an ODU Men's Basketball game. Seating is comfy cushioned stadium seating. We sat in section 108 row M. Solid view of the court. I'd say even the "nosebleed" section of this arena would still give a good view. The Megatron in the middle is high quality. The band played some good tunes. Cheerleaders put on a good show too. Food selection decent and well priced as well. We had BBQ Nachos (chips, some decent BBQ chicken and a cup of cheese sauce. No jalepenos available today ). French fries were fresh and crispy. They have different ticket options including one with an all you can eat buffet. Might check that out next time. read more

It's a great venue for events, with a huge parking garage. We recently attended Jim Gaffigan's stand-up comedy show and had an amazing time. However, the folding chairs on the ground floor were quite uncomfortable. Considering the high price of the tickets, they should provide better chairs or allow guests to bring their own seat cushions. On the positive side, the parking garage was easily accessible, and there were several restaurants within walking distance - just across the street! Overall, it was a great experience. read more

Multi purpose venue for academic, music/entertainment, hobby, and sports events. Recent visit was for an ODU Men's Basketball game. Free parking in adjacent garage. Facility was clean and bright, staffed with well positioned ushers/security force throughout the well-marked arena. Visited the "Big Blue room" pre-game and during halftime which included FREE water and soda, not to mention $2 cups of wine/draft beer and various low cost concessions. Don't let the lines fool you, they dispense stuff quickly and efficiently. PSA: you can leave the room with water/soda but NOT beer/wine. Room even has a large countdown to action clock on the wall not to mention 3-4 projection TVs showing sports/ESPN programming. I was quite impressed with the production quality of the event. The lineup intro with light show/smoke, music and digital screens with movie vignettes were quite the audio/visual treat! Bravo to the team that's cranking out graphics and keeping stats that push to the large ceiling mounted Jumbotron visible from all sides of the arena. Restrooms were fairly well kept and maintained, with locations scattered throughout the complex. read more

This is a multi-purpose venue for all types of entertainment in the Norfolk area of Hampton Roads. Hubby and I have been here before when it was formerly named the Constant Convocation Center. Over the years, we've seen comedians and concerts. At this particular time, we saw the comedian JoKoy and we had a great time. We parked in the garage across the street that was free. Inside was nicely lit and traffic seemed to move right along. Lines were pretty long, but the ushers kept everyone moving. The seats were pretty small and tightly packed but comfortable. read more

I have been to several graduations and events here at the TED. I even took a freshman course here once. Very spacious venue once inside. Elevators and stairs are provided to navigate through the floors. Restrooms were slightly difficult for us to find during the events we attend. Staff sometimes aren't familiar with where they are located from where they are posted. Still, this place makes it possible for Norfolk to have events and graduations right by the university. Awesome venue to see a concert. Went to see WinterJam 2022 and it was awesome. Great parking with attendants that made it seamless to park. Smaller arena made every seat a good seat, great acoustics. Only down side is the speaker arrays came way down off of the ceiling and actually were so big that they blocked the screen a lot of times. Family had a great time seeing some great musicians. I have been wanting a reason to come the Ted Constant Convocation Center for a long time. Nothing had presented itself to me for almost 10 years. My wife who works at ODU is there often for meetings. However, it was a ODU Men's Basketball game that got me in the door. Affectionately known to those in the community as "The Ted" this was part of a 2000 University Village project to bring in restaurants, college housing and more. Construction was completed in the Fall of 2002. Parking for The Ted is in a parking garage beside and it's FREE! When you have never been in some place, seen pics, or really have anyone tell you about it there is no expectation. So I must say I am now a huge fan after seeing what they pulled off for a small 10,000 seat venue. As a matter of fact The Ted has been voted in the top 10 of all venues under 10K in the world and 2nd in the U.S.. They are managed by Global Spectrum and from what I could see operations are excellent. The front of the building is modern and attractive. The outside sidewalk areas clear with trash cans around. The trees out front were all lit up with white lights for the Holidays and looked festive. My experience with ticket check in was terrific and friendly. The lobby surprised me, lot of ODU memorabilia that was organized neatly in cases. A very small under whelming cart sold ODU items for the game. If there is one improvement I could make it's to gave a retail store to sell ODU items. Once inside I was completely impressed with the aesthetics as a basketball venue. Awesome scoreboard and newer floor from what I understand. Sixteen luxury suites surround the interior up rights. There are also upper club and priority cushioned seats in the venue. The bulk of seating for basketball are 7,300+ comfortable fold downs. My seats were general admission which is beside and behind the ODU band. If you get there early enough like I did these are really great seats and you can almost set on the floor. It was also nice to be beside the ODU Pep Band which kept the energy up throughout the game. I was quite shocked to find the seating was probably 75% full and this is break folks. There are two concession stations on the second level that serve exactly the same thing. Service was friendly, the fries were HOT and seasoned nicely and prices fair. NO Alcohol is served. The product as far as ODU Basketball is excellent. Tickets are cheap and season tickets are offered and I found that many get them too! They are having a great season and are 11-1 at this point in the season leading up to continued conference play in January. The team dominated and ultimately ran over St. Mary's. This team should be a NCAA contender. How far they will go if there tix is punched is anyone's guess. Before leaving I walked around the facility some and did utilized the restrooms. For a 12 year old building it appears brand new, there is no signs of wear and the management of the facility has been excellent. Departure out of the garage was insane easy, you just don't find that when you go to an event. I enjoyed myself so much that I got tickets for tomorrow's Women's home game. I can't wait to do it all over again at The Ted. Don't let the current overall rating fool you, this is a 4-5 star venue easy and we are lucky to have it in Norfolk my friends. read more

#8/2020 I guess it's a decent venue in the area for all kinds of events and shows. Plenty of parking with two garages on either side and they're free so that's a huge plus!!! Inside, i think it's pretty clean and self explanatory when trying to locate your seats. Everything is easy to read and follow. Now the seating situation..... It's probably the worst thing about this place. Nothing surprising as everyone comments and mentions about it. They're made for tiny ass people. No room for anything. Not even your own butt or elbows. Not kidding either. I know it's designed to house as many people as they can but it's a damn shame how much they charge for tickets and then you end up just being so uncomfortable throughout your show. I've been to Harlem Globetrotters games, a concert, a Madea play, and a couple comedy shows. It's fine sitting close among your friends and family but it's not fun sitting on top of (or in my case, under) strangers. It's definitely not fun having someone's butt cheek resting on one of your thighs either. Yeah, it's that close. Heaven forbid it's winter when you attend a show because again, guess what? Nowhere to put your big ass coat neither. Plus your drink. Plus your nachos. Ridiccc. It's been awhile since I've purchased anything at their concession stands but I remember from years past, just like at any other venue, prices are ridiculous so expect that. Lastly, to me, the sound system is great! No problem there. I do wish they would project the comedians on the "jumbo" screens so that viewers from the sides and seated further away can get a better look at the performer! Not fun squinting at an ant. Ok this is a nice venue for events that aren't over an hour or so long. I say nice only because of the adjacent parking garage. The seating is horribly tight and not very comfortable. Please like or be able to tolerate the person next to you as you will share space literally as there's no room to not rub elbows. I've experienced this place twice now. Once as a graduate sitting in folding chairs on the floor and recently as a customer at the recent Fantasia and Joe show. The artists were phenomenal but the way we were packed in and when having to stand and sit to allow people to leave the aisle the architecture has major flaws. The tipping point for me was the food concession stand whereas I went to order a burger combo and although it had just been put in the heating area it was cold cold cold. When I mentioned it to one of the workers they just apologized but literally nothing was done to make it right so I decided against the meal. For the cost of food it should at minimum be warm...I would've even taken lukewarm but that was far from the case. The only positive of my recent experience was the bathrooms were very clean and bright. For the amount of traffic in and about the venue the bathrooms were very accommodating. Chartway arena definitely has some takeaways that should be addressed moving forward. read more

I recently came here this weekend to see The Sketchbook Tour with Fantasia, Tank, Robin Thicke, and The Bonfyre. Omgggg!!! All of the artist was soooo good! The venue was pretty big too. I know this is a little weird too say. But the restrooms at this venue are very clean. It surprised me especially with the amount of people using the restroom at the concert. My only complain is why is the food up stairs and the alcohol station downstairs?! When you have heels on and you have to go alllllll the way up stairs to get something to eat. That can be a disaster coming down those stairs. Just saying.... This was my second time coming here. I did come here for a graduation a year ago. I also like the fact that the parking garage is not 5 blocks away. Like at some arenas/venues. It's also extremely convenient cause it's right in the smack dab of so many restaurants. So you can get a quick bite to eat before you go inside. If you get a little sleepy after the show. There is a hotel next door. read more

I haven't been here since it was named, Ted Constant convocation center. I went to see Jo Koy with my husband and the line was long to get in. However, the security people were efficient at moving the lines along, so the wait was minimal. We had floor seating and pretty decent seats in relation to the stage. However, like Jo Koy said they really pack people in there! The seating is built for the size of people back in the 1700s. Of course, I'm built like a football player with my broad shoulders, so I had to angle myself to the side and drape my arm over my husband's shoulder to be comfortable. Evidently, other people were contorted as well. We all probably looked like we were doing yoga in our seats. Another gripe, even though I wasn't seated in these sections, were the seats to the side of the stage. People that had these seats had to crane their necks to the right or to their left to see Jo Koy on stage. Aside from the spacing of seats, I felt the staff did a pretty good job of showing us our seats and ensuring those that did not have floor seats, were not straggling onto the floor area. It's a decent venue for a larger crowd. I personally Prefer a smaller venue, but then again he did do stand up to a sold out show at funny bone 10 years ago before he exploded in popularity. Not a bad venue, but prepare to be squished unless you have sky box tickets or it's not a packed show. read more

I'm a fan. I graduated from ODU with an M.A. in 2010 and while going to school there only attended one state women's basketball championship game when my undergraduate school, JMU, was playing ODU. Bad I know, but I bleed purple. The inside when you first enter is beautiful. I love the architechtural choices they made. It has huge expansive windows which let in a lot of natural light from the outside. There are many sports memorabilia trophies decorating the front hall and the floor has an ODU mosaic pattern if I remember correctly. The sports trophy area also tells a story and provides some history about ODU's sports teams and their accomplishments. I think it is very well and tastefully done and it is very striking when you first enter this building. The bathrooms and concessions are upstairs so you'll be walking up at least one-two flights of stairs when you enter probably. They have two or three concession areas on each level where you can buy the typical snacks: nachos, soda, hot dogs, bottled water, etc. I also saw Cirque du Soliel here last year and I had a fairly pleasant experience. We weren't in the front row but we were "floor" and sat about 3-4 rows back. It was super close to the stage and if we had been any closer up it may have been difficult to see the performers. I realize this is a traveling show and they do the best they can with the various venues but I'm sure ODU's staff at this building are aware that when folks pay for a show they intend to be able to see it, unobstructed. So that was somewhat annoying but it wasn't really directly affecting me, almost, but not quite. The parking at ODU is always a nightmare situation. They have added several garages to accomodate parking for events at this location. With I think three very close by. If you attend something on a school night expect delays because students are commuting in and out of classes, they are being told they can't park in spots they've paid $250+ for passes to park in and are angry, and traffic backs up on Hampton Blvd. Fortunately I've never experienced it, but I saw it when I was a student and it didn't look fun. I'll stick to weekends, it's bad enough on weekends. The parking garages have one entrance and exit mostly and while they are new and fairly well designed, when thousands of people are trying to leave at the same time it creates a major delay inside the garages so be prepared to sit for a while both coming and going. All in all - I think this is a fabulous addition to ODU's campus and it was very well designed. I enjoy attending shows here and this is one of the rare buildings on campus that make me proud of ODU as my alma mater. read more

Coming from Houston where all the venues are so huge this was great. The seats were not so close that your knees were in the ears of the person in front of you. The stage was not to far away even if you were on the top row. We were in the middle and had fantastic seats. Place was clean vendors were friendly. We took an Uber so I cant say anything about the parking. I would go back again when i was in town. It was nice to feel like you weren't just in a place where they tried to cram extra seats in to sell more tickets. read more

I've attended several graduations here in the past and while the place is nice I didn't really think much about it. However, after attending my first concert here I find I like the place quite a bit more than I did. The design of the entire place is really for basketball games with a ringed concourse all the way around the top of the seating. There's plenty of food and beverages if you want. Beer's are pricey at $10 a pop, but I think that's pretty much the norm at any arena or amphitheater these days. The Ted works really well for concerts and other events where you don't need a full sized 20,000 capacity arena to. I caught the band Sigur Ros here last Tuesday night the 24th of Sept and really enjoyed the show. The Ted was a perfect environment for a band of this type, and unlike the Scope no horrible vibrations during the performance. One last thing, it's insanely easy to get in and out of either of the parking garages located on either side of the arena as because your parking fee is covered in the ticket cost. So no additional stopping to pay someone. I would definitely catch a show here again. read more

I was here to witness the 2010 ODU Graduation Ceremony. My sister was one of the hundreds of graduates in attendance, and it was a proud moment for our family. She is the last to graduate of my parent's children. Both my parents were proud, relieved, and humbled that their journey from the Philippines to the US over 30 years ago had finally come to fruition. The Convocation Center is not a large venue by any means. Its maximum seating capacity is roughly 10,000 seats. What this translates to is that there really isn't a bad seat in the entire building. There are more than enough restrooms and handicapped seating, as well as luxury boxes and concession stands. I thought that the venue was designed for function as opposed to elegance. But Norfolk is a blue collar/military town, so one wouldn't expect anything otherwise. There are several parking decks, with two being adjacent to the center. Funny that the only other review was for an ODU Graduation ceremony. Well I came here for the 2011 ODU Graduation Ceremony! Like he said, this is a small arena, even by college standards. The concourse areas are small and I would imagine during a sporting event it would be difficult to walk around. It was somewhat too crowded to walk around and that wasn't even with the arena filled to capacity. Oh the memories that lie within the Ted! Between ODU graduation, ODU basketball games, and concerts this arena will always have a place in my heart. Located on ODU's campus. You've got two parking garages on each side which is helpful for events. As lover of sports and concerts you can be guaranteed that the seats are pretty comfortable and honestly there isn't a bad seat in the house. They've upgraded the Jumbotron in recent years so that's even better. For graduation, you can surely see your loved one from anywhere. I have had mostly positive experiences here as a student attendee. I would definitely say attending a sporting event here is the best. read more

The Ted Constant Convocation Center is where Old Dominion University basketball teams play their home games. I recently went to the arena to see my little brother college basketball game. There's parking available in a deck next to the arena. Arrive early to avoid the heavy traffic. Visiting players will call is located inside of the main entrance at a table (must show ID). I sat behind the bench but all seats have a good view of the main court. The arena staff was very polite and welcoming, even though we had on the opposing team jerseys. I appreciated the great hospitality from staff at Ted Constant Convocation Center. The arena was well maintained and clean. I like how memorabilia is placed throughout the arena including the Women's National Championship trophies. I give Ted Constant Convocation Center a 4 star rating rounded up to a 4.5 because of hospitality. read more

I've been here in the past for the Indian Festival and thought the place was so big. Then I came here for the Green Day concert (03/11/17) and though the place was small. But small in a good way because it felt more intimate, like anyone there probably had a great view. The seats were small though, but again, it's for a concert and you shouldn't be sitting down when a band like Green Day is jamming out. The sound was great and so was the lighting. They put on a great show. I would definitely come back here for another concert. read more

I have been to the Ted Constant Center quite a few times. I came here is time for the Spartyka Fight League tournament. I don't like how the piece always blocks off the main street for the garage parking. But getting on the other side of the garage is pretty easy. I did not have to pay for parking which was awesome. The garage is pretty compact. it just seems small in general even though it does not look small from the outside. The venue is pretty standard for a center of its kind. The tournament had 18 matches. I really enjoyed the show. Any events at the venue are great to attend because it's pretty hassle free for the most part. read more

I'm a little biased about this place. Why? It holds close to me with ODU. A graduate of 2005 I believe I was the first class to have a graudation ceremony at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. I did fall asleep during graduation though... It's not the biggest venue in the area. But that being said there is not a single bad seat in the house. This place has been host to several events: graduations, ODU basketball, WWE/TNA wrestling, concerts, job fairs, fundraisers and the list goes on... It's clean, well lit and great for the many events I listed above. I certainly suggest checking the joint out if you can... My recommendation - ODU baskeball. Get some tickets to the blue room and your in a special extremely large room sippin' on some beer before, during and after the game. Oh, and another soft spot with this place... This facility is set up pretty dang good. I travel a lot and go to quite a few stadiums and the Convocation Center's easy flow in and out and easy access to plenty of bathrooms makes it much more enjoyable experience. Something that you don't always get at a venue despite there being a high price to attend. This year alone I've been at AT&T's Cowboys stadium in Dallas and the Spurs in San Antonio. The Verizon center for the Wizards, the Redskins crappy stadium and the Albuquerque PIT. The foot traffic flow throughout this place rivals the big money Cowboys stadium and beats the PIT hands down. All that said parking could be much better but it's still not bad so overall I give it 4 Stars and remain a big fan. PS: Get better food vendors and you'll easily push it up to 5 Stars. read more

The staff in the venue with the seating was very polite and helpful. Came here for the first time for Spartyka. My boyfriend had tickets really loves MMA and had one of the members from his school fighting in the main event. We came out to support and they ended up winning! Aside from that the Ted Constant is bigger than I expected, they had different food vendors some of them sold BBQ, some of the sold burgers, they served draft beer, canned beer, and wine at the event. Very clean and organized. Looking forward to the next week, it's good to see MMA recognized here in VA. read more

This is great venue to watch sports and concerts. I regularly attend ODU basketball games and just attended my first ODU wrestling match. It's always a good time! There is a decent selection of things to eat from hot dogs, pop corn, funnel cakes chicken tenders. It is classic stadium food. All the concessions are pricey so do not expect a deal. They have a Blue Room to drink before the games if you are a big money booster and season ticket holder for basketball. Come check out the Ted for your next sporting event or concert. I've been there many times for many different events. Sports, graduations, etc. My main complaint is how UN-FRIENDLY it is to the handicapped. Or those who just prefer not to walk a bunch of stairs. You follow the signs up several flights of stairs, only to find your seats are down several sections and you are walking down several flights, only to have to walk back up several flights to get to the bathrooms and food. Poor design. The concession food is slighty better than other places, thankfully there is no parking fee, mostly it is fairly easy to get in and get out of. read more
