Since there are no longer any camera stores in the Boise, ID, area, I stopped in here to be old school and actually see and touch the merchandise while looking for a new camera bag. I am tired of doing so much now by online shopping. As long as I keep making regular trips to Salem and have a photography need, I will be stopping here. It's apparent to me that you will pay the price here as you would pay most anywhere online. However, what you get as a bonus is actually some human interaction which can offer much appreciated advice or perhaps some knowledge on things you didn't even consider. I was fortunate to meet Mazda Mokalla, the store manager, and he was exceptionally helpful and informative. We discussed more than just camera bags and found out they offer online classes, etc. I have tuned into their social media presence to keep up to date with what they are offering. The Shutterbug is a must have resource for all your photography needs in my opinion, and apparently, they are still doing film! Dave was a pro for taking Canadian passport photos, which has more particular rules that US ones. He has the photo section of the passport application memorized, including the size, facial requirement and what shirt not to wear. They also have the required stamp that needs to go on the back of Canadian photos. It is also probably the best place to take infant baby passport photos (for any country) since they have a white screen made into a chair for the baby to lay on. Other places I had to hold my baby up in the air (like in lion king) in front of a standing white screen in the wall, which can be hard when they lack head control and ur trying to hide ur hands in the photo. read more

Anyone who is a photographer knows that the worst thing that can happen is dropping a camera and having it break. Second worst is having your lens break when you drop it. But when both things happen and it's the biggest dance weekend of the year and you need to be able to take photos with a camera that is fast enough in low light to capture these incredible performers...you can't use an online shop. Thankfully, Salem has The Shutterbug and Mazda with an inventory of rentals. We found a solution to get me back on the floor to photograph the dancers in the way that they deserve. Not only did he hold my hand through the trauma of the broken tools, but came up with so many solutions for each problem we ran into, including offering to drive to Eugene to bring back a camera from their stock if needed. I am so thankful that we had this option. I was ready to pay 4 figures for a solution to get things done that were needed but knowing that the solution ended up costing less than $100 made me so incredibly thankful for a local shop with products in stock. read more

I went to the Shutterbug to buy film for my 60 year old Canon. The salesman, Mazda noticed the old flash unit, asked me if I had any flash bulbs for it. I told him no, and he gave me these NOS flash bulbs for free!!! All I can say is if you want to go buy a camera, supplies, accessories, go to the Shutterbug! There is a general lack of communication between customer service and labs. I asked for a 16-bit scan (twice). It came back to me as 8-bit, twice. I get it. My request might seem a little more nuanced, but not unheard of. People shoot images RAW, so a 16-bit scan shouldn't be a difficult request. If they couldn't do 16-bit, that's fine; but customer service told me about 16-bit files he received from their sister-store. read more

Great experience overall. I'm reviewing two locations as my experience spanned two physical locations, the Salem location being the first. Short story: Staff were helpful, friendly, and informative. Location was pleasant to be inside and interesting looking, if small. Prices I would describe as "firmly tracking MSRP" which in practice means the prices are on the higher side if you spend all your time online. Parking lot less than ideal for large vehicles and somewhat difficult to determine the true entrance to from the same side of the street. Parking lot quibbles are minor and don't knock a star off, but could be helpful for people planning to make the trip. Surrounding area felt safe to me. Long story: I called the Beaverton location initially inquiring about some equipment and whether it was in stock at any of their locations. Initially they thought the equipment was not in stock at any location, but within 15 minutes of that call I received a call back indicating they had made a mistake and pointed me to the Salem location. I called the Salem location and had no issues reserving the equipment. Upon driving to the Salem location, the only issue I had was the somewhat unclear entrance to their parking lot, which caused me to pull into the auto repair place next door initially. Bear in mind the parking lot for the location is on the small side, so if you normally drive a full-size quad cab pickup, a Hummer H1, or some military surplus APC, that could be a bit of a tight fit and it may be wise to park across the street if weather permits. If the weather does not permit, consider bringing a large plastic bag as a rain shield if you'll be picking up expensive equipment there while driving a huge vehicle. The location itself is a bit small, but an interestingly designed building which is well kept. HVAC wasn't too hot or too cold, the inside was well lit without having to have all the lights on even when overcast outside (see also: the design of the building), very pleasant, no complaints at all. The surrounding area felt safe to me, something which is hard to determine from overhead maps, but much easier to determine when you actually walk around a bit. So no complaints there either. Staff at the location were friendly, very informative, and Mr. Mokalla (manager) in particular did an excellent job helping me pick the remaining bits and bobs I hadn't yet settled on but would end up needing (memory cards, RF to EF converters, and so on). They also went over the ins and outs of the Canon extended warranty process to my satisfaction. The transaction I presented was somewhat complicated, would ultimately span to inventory at an additional location (Portland) as well as inventory not yet in stock. It didn't take long to finalize how much it was all going to cost, where everything would be coming from and where I had to pick things up. I was able to pay in full and as of today the transaction is completed to my complete satisfaction with the arrival of the final piece by mail. I did do price checks online prior to my trip down to The Shutterbug and there isn't much more to say that my short answer already did not. Their prices track MSRP pretty firmly, so don't expect their prices to track every sale price elsewhere online unless they indicate that they have something on sale on their website or in store. To be clear, that's not abnormal, however some people do assume that everywhere tracks everywhere else's sales, and these people should not assume this to be the case without checking the website or calling for a price check. Again, overall a great experience, 5 stars. read more

These folks are the only ones in town that I could find who offer to take Canadian passport photos. And, yes, there's a BIG difference between Canadian and other passport pictures. Long story short - Canada is incredibly picky. My first photos did not meet their requirements, so my application was rejected. Staff at Shutterbug immediately offered to re-take the photos without charge, a kindness I didn't expect. And, not only were my photos re-taken, but they were made ready much sooner than expected. This has been a stressful process; having supportive folks at Shutterbug has been immeasurably helpful. While waiting for more photos to print and the ink to dry, I learned that one young man who works there makes a long commute each day because he's treated so well by the people who own the business. He talked for some time about how good his benefits are, how he feels respected by owners, staff, and customers, and that it's worth the drive even with the increased gas prices. It was gratifying to hear someone talk about his place of employment in this way. I will definitely be using Shutterbug in the future, as I like to support solid employers who treat their employees well. read more

Just finished a full day of classes and was so very impressed by the facility, staff and instructors. Having just moved up from the California Bay Area, I was really expecting to find little available in the way of full service camera stores due to both the Internet activity and changes in technology. I was introduced to the store via the Marion County Fair and during that visit met dome fine folks that belong to a local camera club. They mentioned some upcoming classes and gave me the website to access. I signed up and invested a full day of 45 - 60 min classes on a variety of subjects. I took several pages of notes and picked up a number of both tips and had any questions gladly answered. In addition during the breaks went to the counter to pick up some recommended filters snd advice. What I received was additional great information, my filters and a great price. This is now my go to spot for advice, gear, and future classes. read more

A few weeks ago I scheduled an appointment for a photography class specifically working on portraits. I should have been more specific with where I was skill wise and what I was looking for as the class was not quite what I was expecting which once again I could've communicated better. Regardless the service I received was very professional and well presented. Hunter, who helped me, had put together a well thought out power point in which he invested a lot of time into. I think this would be a phenomenal class for someone brand new to working with cameras. The power point explained ISO, shutter speed and aperture and a complete run down of my camera. If you are brand new to photography or unfamiliar with your camera Hunter is a great teacher! read more

Wow! This store was wonderful, and the customer service was terrific! Jason was beyond helpful and not pushy. I wasn't sure what kind of camera I wanted/needed, so I had a million questions for him. He was so patient and knowledgeable with me, I was quite impressed. Jason really took his time and never pushed a sale on me. I could not be any happier with my Nikon D5200, it's perfect! Since this is my first dslr I have so many questions, Jason always answers any questions I have then some I didn't even know I had! I recently bought a new camera and accidently deleted all the pictures on my memory card. I called all the places I could think of that had retrieval options and they were all several hundred dollars and didn't guarantee that they would even get any pictures. Best Buy was $250 or more regardless if they could get any pictures recovered. Other places had a base fee of $100+ and then a dollar per picture recovered. There was the option of purchasing a program off of the internet and trying to retrieve pictures that way which ranged from $30 to a couple of hundred. However all three that I tried couldn't read my memory card. I had all but given up hope and lost over 300 pictures of my little girls first horse ride, first day of school, a huge family vacation, and so many more. To say the least I was heartbroken. However, I still didn't take any pictures over the ones I deleted on my memory card because I still hadn't tried all the places that specialized in selling cameras and the like and I thought they may have a place to refer me to. I was driving by Shutterbug and realized that they specialize in cameras and most of the places I contacted were computer based. I had not taken any pictures over the ones I deleted (I state that again because it is very important that you have not done that) so they may still be retrievable since new data wasn't written over the original data. I called Shutterbug and told them what I had done and if they had a way to retrieve them. They said to bring in the memory card and they would send it out to be processed. They had a person that used three different programs to try and retrieve and it would only cost $30 per disc of retrieval and nothing if they were not able to recover any pictures. They were able to retrieve all my pictures and did so in only a few days. I was SO happy that I didn't lose all those priceless pictures and highly impressed with the speed and price point of Shutterbug. Not only were they friendly and quick with their service but they have a drive through and that's what I used for both pick up and drop off so I never even had to get out of my car! For now on they will be the first place I go to for all my picture needs. read more

I have been a customer at The Shutterbug since the 80s and I'm so glad they are still here for me for my camera (digital & yes, film too) accessories, equipment and service. The South Salem location is easy to get in and out of and usually I use the drive thru, but I do go in to use the photo kiosks for quick, custom printing. Last summer, I attended a camera demo at this location where sales reps provided easy access to all kinds of camera bodies and lenses and of course assistance. They also were running classes inside the store with some experts, but I didn't sit in on any of those. This new location is wonderful with a friendly environment, helpful, expert staffing and competitive pricing. I also like to support it because it is a locally owned and operated business--which I prefer over exporting money by purchasing online or at a big box store that sells widgets instead of something that they are passionate about (as Shutterbug employees are about photography, cameras and supporting their local community). I would recommend any Shutterbug location, but this one and their downtown Portland one are my favorites. read more

Honestly, I shouldn't have given this place any stars at all. The customer service we received tonight SUCKED. My grandma came in wanting to transfer her photos/videos from her phone onto a disc. She isn't tech savvy, so she asked the man working for help. He responded saying that he was busy & if she could do it herself. She told him that she didn't understand how to use their device. So he tells her again that he is busy. I understand that you're busy, but to tell a customer to do it themselves is rude... especially if they literally do not know how to do it. Anyways, so my grandma leaves, comes home & asks me to help her. I go back into shutterbug with her ready to transfer her photos/videos onto a disc. Once we were in front of one of their MANY computers, the SAME MAN who couldn't help my grandma because he was "TOO BUSY" finally tells us that we can't transfer her stuff onto a disc because none of their computers are working.......... I never write reviews. I am however still stewing over what I considered to be nearly criminal service that I got at shutterbug. I brought in 10 40-year-old slides to be scanned into JPEG files. They said they would be done in 2 days. I had brought them in on a Friday, called Tuesday they said they were not done yet. I called again on Wednesday they still weren't done. On Thursday I dropped by; they still hadn't touched them, but said that they could do them while I waited. I paid my $15 and left. When I got home and looked at them. They obviously had not been dusted or color corrected. I was furious I'm still furious. As I said these slides were 40 years old. I consider them nearly priceless. I wish there was something I could do more than a review to communicate my disdain for such unbelievably bad service. read more

I bought my Nikon 830 here. very good customer service. nice selection of cameras . prices in the store can vary quite a bit according to the season. especially during the holiday season and black Fridays there can be a major difference of a lot of money on a camera. they will match any advertised special if the price is less than another store they will refund you the rest. read more

I have given shutterbug business for over 10 years and have not had any problems with service, warranties or equipment purchases. In fact they recently cleaned my camera for free when they were under no obligation or factory recall. Shutterbug always matches a price I can find elsewhere and are helpful in selecting equipment to add to my collection. The remodel of the South Salem store has a nice touch and the additional staff is outstanding in providing customer service. Also, if the Shutterbug doesn't have the item I wish to purchase they tend to have it ordered and delivered within a couple of days. They have even obtained merchandise I was interested in purchasing so I could check it out first hand! I believe if I had any problem with a purchase at Shutterbug the staff would make good on a solution. I highly recommend Shutterbug with at least 10 years experience as a customer. read more

AVOID. They will break your gear! I brought my Canon SLRs to them to be cleaned. One came back totally unusable. I the took it to "Advance Camera" in Beaverton. They said they could fix the photo array and CLEAN IT for $200. They said it was filthy and showed me the "test image". Shutterbug has lost my business forever. (I wish I could give 0 stars) To be fair, Advance Camera had no idea that I had already had my camera to Shutterbug. They told my that I had probably left my camera in the sun too long and the glue holding the photo array in place malfunctioned from the heat. read more

Over the years, I have found The Shutterbug to have helpful and knowledgable sales staff. They also are very competitive in their pricing, and will typically match online pricing. Of course, compared to online shopping, the ability to try out the equipment in-store is invaluable. I was particularly impressed with my recent visit to the South Salem store. I had come to the point of narrowing my decision on a full frame DSLR. Sean, the store manager, assisted me off and on for about 2 hours as I tried different camera bodies and lens combos. He was knowledgable, patient and informative, and helped me come to a confident decision. Sean had excellent sales follow-through and really went the extra mile both during and after the sale. I have had great service at the Downtown and Lancaster locations as well, but I highly recommend the South Salem location thanks to Sean's dedication to a high level of customer service. read more

Recently I went into the shutterbug to get some pictures put on a cd, a young guy helped me with everything. I was waiting at the counter for the CDs like I was told to and while waiting a girl with short dark hair approached me asking what I needed in a really snotty voice. She made me feel like I was a bother and had no interest in giving good customer service. Now this is the second time I've been here and had to deal with her and her attitude.
