What can I say about this place? For starters it is an independently owned camera shop. Not corporate and stiff. I got a great feeling the moment I walked in the door. The owner works there and is very hands on. He took the time to listen to me, find out what I was after and get me into something I could not only afford, but something I could grow with. Incredible gem of a photography store, this place carries all the main camera bodies, new and used, and a lot of lenses. It's really a hidden treasure here in rural Dallas. I was impressed by their knowledgeable staff. I was easily able to find what I was looking for and discuss issues of comparability and strategize my setup with the employees. In addition to camera gear, they had a great assortment of support items. Most of their stock was based on portability, so if you are looking for studio strobes the selection was more limited. But they had something that would make any photoshoot go fine. They also carried plenty of speed lights, speed light gear like magmod, light modifiers, flash trigger systems, tripods, plenty of bags and backpacks to choose from, and more. They even had a lot of film and developer products for running a dark room. I was impressed. And I know parking in Dallas isn't a challenge but they have a large parking lot. I bought my first camera here when I was attending OSU. They were immense help and shared knowledge about other cameras that I later went back to them to get my second camera, tripod, and a few lens. They are amazingly fair on trades, love sharing knowledge, and gave away accessories to assist in my journey - even remembered who I was. A great selection in photography equipment. A friend recommenced this shop to me, and I couldn't be happier that she did! I recently got into photography and the people here where incredible and spent hours teaching me about how higher end cameras work and how to use them. I am quite poor due to some IRL misfortune, and have to stretch every dollar I have, and they have an AMAZING section of used gear. I ended up walking out of there with an older camera(It was a $1200 camera 10 years ago LOL) for 200 bucks(The Nikon D7000) and a nice lens, and I ended up taking some excellent pictures! The store employees are all photographers themselves, and they will let you try equipment instore and really help you find the right fits(Or bang for you buck, in my case LOL) for what you want to do! Im not sure if I would of gotten into the hobby like I have if it wasnt for their time and help. They also have a very generous return policy where they will take anything back if you simply dont like it within 30 days, and I did end up swapping to a SUPER nice used d810 before the end of the 30 days on the D7000(The D7000 was a damn incredible camera for 200 bucks). If you are looking to get into the hobby or are already an experienced shooter, I think this store will absolutely fit your needs with their expansive set of new and used gear and excellent personnel. I have been buying (and browsing) at Focal Point, off and on, for close to 20 years. I have always found the owners and the staff to be knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. They will take whatever time one needs to decide on some item of gear, and remain patient and helpful through the whole process. I'm not sure whether I should broadcast this to the general public or not, but it's their policy so here goes -- they allow browsers to paw through, pick up and examine any of the hundreds of used, high-end cameras and lenses they have sitting out on the counters. This is actually my second review of this shop. I just can't say enough good things about these folks. I don't review businesses online, I was an executive chef and have seen the ridiculousness of online reviews. However this place deserves every amount of praise. This is how you do it, I feel attended to every time I do business here, and I live in Seattle! That is right I live 230 miles away and, I do all my camera gear shopping here. Owners seem to have a chip on their shoulder, seem personable but somewhat "cold". Focal Point continually suggest sub-par equipment from what I request. An example, I shop for a Nikon lens and they try pushing a cheaper non-Nikon model on me. Why do they try selling me something I did not request? I do like shopping at a locally owned store and try to give them my business. However, Focal Point makes it difficult to shop there. Another example. I wanted a specific color of a camera bag and ordered it in April. The owner wrote down my contact information. A week later I showed up and they had not ordered the item yet, but the owner stated it would arrive soon. Two weeks later I stopped by and the workers tell me it is not in yet. I suspected it had not been ordered at all. Once more I stop by and there is no bag. Here it is October and I have not heard from Focal Point. They could have been honest with me in the first place and stated they could not get the item, or did not want to order the item, or had other difficulties. I now remind myself to NOT shop here even though it is tempting to give the place some business. Try Shutterbug at several locations in Salem. They are friendly, helpful and go out of their way to assist you and your purchases. In addition, Shutterbug always matches the lowest price of the item listed on the internet. read more

This is the camera store I've been missing. The Albany/Corvallis area no longer has a good camera store. We have a small shutterbug but everything has to be ordered in from other stores and you can't see it before hand. Plus they have never worked with most of the equipment. This store seems very out of place in the little town of Dallas. WOW, do they have a LOT of gear. They have an entire wall of bags, new and used bodies and lenses, a large selection of high quality tripods, just an awesome selection. I am a digital shooter, but was impressed by the support they still have for film and developing also. The staff were all friendly and very helpful, laid back, and didn't pressure me. Living in Eugene, OR there are no local what I call full-service camera stores. Thank goodness Focal Point is where it is, otherwise we'd have to drive all the way to Portland to find knowledgeable photo folks who are also friendly and honest. These folks did not let the digital revolution pass them by and are always current with information that, these days, changes daily. I've purchased equipment and accessories from these folks for years and I'm darn glad they are there to answer questions, speculate accurately about rumors, (this is possible only with years of experience with vendors), but most of all I know they'll stand behind what they sell with no questions asked. They always take trade-ins at respectable prices, (try that at a big box store or an on-line purchase), and always know they can beat all competition with outstanding customer service before and especially after any purchase. Most of the hundred plus members of our local camera club know from experience that the folks at this store, especially Mike the owner for major purchases, will be the first and last people they need to talk to before making any equipment decision. These folks know all the details about the equipment they sell and will tell you honestly the strong points and weak points right up front to make decisions easy regardless of what kind of shooting you do.
