That was in regards to the museum being closed on Thursday when the sign said it was open. The volunteer today (Jackie) was extremely nice. She knew a lot about the items. I walked around looking at the stuff families have donated. There was a homemade bed that belonged to Collin McKinney (he was a founder of McKinney, TX) and is buried here at VA cemetery. What I really liked best was the vintage school memorabilia. The old football, baseball and cheerleader uniforms. The school pictures were neat. They had a girl's volleyball photo from 1912 and the uniforms were big, bulky dresses. Must have been difficult to move around in those clothes. Yet, I would rather see those then the mini shorts and tight shirts that girls wear today when playing volleyball. There was also a few photos from the segregated black school. Today it's been converted into a church across the railroad tracks. This was a really neat place. I could't find anything that belonged to my ancestors. Which is kinda sad b/c my 3rd great-grandfather was one of the wealthiest landowners in Cannon. You would think someone would have donated something. After I walked around, I talked to the volunteer. She was extremely nice and polite. She let me browse through a book on the history of Grayson county. I couldn't find anything on my family. This is a nice little place to look around. They're only open three days a week during the summer for 2 hrs a day. Like my previous trip, sometimes the volunteers don't show up. They do have vintage postcards and calendars for sale. All sales go to the museum. They also take donations.

Areas are displayed with a wide variety of antiques, photos, clothing, and personal belongings of citizens of Van Alstyne's past. Entrance is free, but no photography is allowed. A single staff member works the desk. The hours of operation are slim, only a couple a day. If you're passing through it's a neat stop. If you have family history in this area help the museum out by looking through binders of unidentified photographs. You might find a relative or two. My personal favorite displays were the personal grooming items.

Rayburn served as the 43rd Speaker of the House of Representatives, the record holder for the longest tenure in that role - 17 years (over three separate stints). He was the Representative from Texas' 4th District from 1913 to 1961. The Rayburn House in Bonham is a collection of news articles, memorabilia and several videos that describe the life and times of Speaker Rayburn. His huge library is also accessible. It was cool to see the house, and to see it still very preserved as to what it would have been in the time he was living there. I especially liked the second floor of the house because it was cool to see the bedrooms. It made me want an outdoor sleeping porch to cool down on summer nights... but nonetheless I'm glad to live in a time where there's air conditioning!! They also have a few old fashioned cars to see. So, if that's something you like too, you may enjoy a quick visit. I'm also not much of a car person, so I can't remember what's there. Since it's also a farm, they have some information about farming back in the day too, which was good to see. I think my favorite part were the animals. They have some chickens and roosters, but the best was the donkey named Stinky! Haha!! Luckily, having a friend that worked there, we were able to get him to come over and say hello and even feed him some carrots. So cute... and thankfully, not too stinky ;)

When I tell you, it was the best little museum that I have ever been to... I mean it. They got what they were doing instantly unlocked the doors and let me in ask if I wanted the whole experience I said no that I would come back and save it for when I was with my whole family, but just the active attentiveness was heartfelt in mind blowing.
